Small Japanese shoji screens, a miniaturized version of traditional panels that can serve as a home decoration or a tabletop, desk ornament.
I've made them with various kumiko patterns, shoji rice paper behind, some with double panels, foldable with hinges and a small shelf board between, and solo ones, with supports.
Wood: western red cedar / basswood and walnut for kumiko
Finish: carnauba-beeswax mix (Borma Antikwachs)
Shoji paper and rice glue

This is insanely well made. I watched it in Japan with my neighbour who is a professional traditional carpenter and he was even more in owe than me. Adrian, you should consider working in Japan. Your attention to detail is phenomenal and the end result is simply exquisite. The only thing my neighbour had to say is "he uses the Kanna (planer) like a Gaijin, but everything else is perfect.

Thanks Dorian! It is indeed :) I would have went more crazy with joinery if it wasn't so small, with an extension of the rails over the styles chamfers...I can imagine how lovely is it to work with cedar on normal size things.

Sholi screens are great as window coverings. No maintenance and will outlast both mini blinds and vertical blinds.

try using story sticks. u can use superglue and masking tape or double-sided tape or even clamps to stick em down and use em to make ur cuts. then remove it so u can chisel the half laps and save the story stick for the next time u make em. great for production style work. either way beautiful work :)

i could follow everything and saw the entire work even if you didn't show everything here. quite simple to figure out hard to master but well worth it. (gotta be veeeeery careful when working with small pieces of wood and if you have gorilla hands like mine it's doubly hard to do. )

Oooh Adrian, I have looked forward to your next video, and I must say, you did not disappoint! I love that you used the Kumiko pattern from the other video! In all honesty, you are the one KZfaqr that continually amazes me and never produce other than magnificent videos! Have you considered maybe making larger projects? Or is your workspace too small for that? I'd love to see you make something big, like a door in the same style as you've always made! PS. loved the soundtrack for this one! Very soothing.

Thank you very much! Indeed, those asanoha's where from one year ago when I made the kumiko video, were already 50% done :) I can do bigger projects, like some home furniture, a bit difficult in a 3x2m space, by making piece by piece then assemble on site, or head out outside to sand or finish them. I will probably do some for me in the near future. Maybe 1-2 more videos now, then by the end of the summer I will have a vid making a small solar kiln outside :) That will be more of construction wood, osb and miter saw stuff :) Thanks for your comment!

Видео отличное пособие, как НЕНУЖНО делать деревянные соединения в 21 веке. Если обрабатывать стамеской и шип и отверстие под него, то две детали в одну плоскость не выведешь - нужно будет шлифовать всю конструкцию. 3:18 - а если еще и так подрубать, то и линейные размеры будут всегда гулять. И тут уже шлифовка поможет только наружный размер рамки выровнять.

Thanks! They are not so complicated, what you see in the vid that's all, put some gliders thick as the depth you wanna plane, add some side rails as the width of the plane, and a stop. Then you can add spacers inside to set the thickness of the stock from 0 to the thciknes of the slider you used

Thank you! That is rice glue, used specially for shoji paper. You can use also PVA glue (white one better) as well, but just be careful not to squeeze it out on the wood or the visible paper as it will stain it. When I made the mini lamps I used PVA but they were very small and I spread first the glue on a paper towel then place the panel on it for a second to grab the glue consistent all over.
