■ New version of the lamps here: • Tabletop Japanese Shoj... with USB LED lighting --
Can be purchased on my shop at www.adrianpreda.com/shop
Another episode of mini woodworking projects, tabletop Japanese lamps with various Kumiko design patterns.
I've made five different lamps with various adaptations of traditional square models of shoji designs. The lamps are only 5" or 6" (120-150mm tall).
The frame is made from american walnut with half lap joinery, the Kumiko patterns from basswood and shoji paper on the back of them.

When I saw the title I thought: "Hey, that might be a fun little project to try for myself. Can't be that difficult." Now I think I might keep drawing stickmans. Beautiful work. This is real great craftmanship.

Your videos inspired me to get into fine woodworking as well. Previously I thought woodworking was out of my realm since I live in a tiny apartment, but you showed otherwise. I bought some hand tools based on your recommendations, and I'm now trying to build the low workbench from your plans. Unfortunately my shiny new low-angled jack plane has difficulties with tear out due to weird grain patterns in the wood, so I'll probably be doing a lot sanding :) Anyway, I just wanted say thank you for your videos. They're very much enjoyed!
@AdrianPreda
@AdrianPreda 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, the LA planes have difficulties when used to flatten weird grain wood, cause of the low blade angle. In order eliminate this or reduce the tearout you need to have a higher angle blade, like 38 or 50 deg, or even add a sec bevel. You can either rebevel your existing blade or buy an extra one and use it only in this situations. If you have a veritas plane, they sell also already blades on that angles. I too need to get a second high angle blade for this purpose, but for the moment I use the jp plane to eliminate the tearout. LA planes otherwise are the best for shooting boards, as you mostly do endgrain on those, that low angle blade cuts more easy there.
