Is the title click bait? Well, only in a sense that it doesn't have too much to do with the video, which means you'll have to watch until the end to see if it does or not. LOL. Hey... I'm just trying to be competitive with the other youtubers here. Don't be mad. U mad? Please don't be.
December 29, 2018: It is almost the New Year, but to help send off 2018 with a bang a handful of us head out to Joshua Tree National Park to traverse Old Dale / Gold Crown road. This is actually a scouting trip to see if this trail would be suitable for most Subaru's. Is it? I guess watch and find out :)

Unijack 4000 lbs.
**for your Subaru, make sure you buy this one**
amzn.to/2VG5ORv
(careful not to get the 6000 lbs. version, at over 11 inches, it's too tall for most Subaru's.

Wow, I was already loving this video before I even got to the t-shirt modeling segment!! Thanks Jon, you make it look good!! Those new tires look great on your Foz and the whole time going up Old Dale Road, I couldn't help thinking about your *other* Old Dale Road video. I really did NOT see that coming this time around! Really enjoyable video all around, and always fun to see all these Instagram accounts I know come to life on the screen. That GoPro7Black footage is sooo nice. So many great shots in this episode and such a strikingly beautiful area to explore. Can't wait for the next episode to drop!

softroadingthewest thanks Donald! I’ll never forget my first trip up this road and I hope this video takes nothing away from it. The 2 inch lift makes things easier this time around, but hey! I did it at stock height too. I just got back from a snow camping trip, and I’m excited to put the next video together. I know winter is such a big topic, and sleeping inside a Subaru in freezing temps is what people want to tags

Just did this trail with a lifted suzuki sidekick on 31's and my girlfriend was in a lifted AWD explorer on 32's. I didn't get a spotter but I spotted for her. It was her first time doing anything other then mudding. I also made it to Brooklyn mine she couldn't make it up the second big hill to get to it so I had to back it off the mountain for her great fun trail doing Calico Kramer arch tomorrow. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 only found out about this trail from this channel thanks JonDZ keep up the vids

Hoping to go on this trail in a few weeks. Do you think a non XT, non lifted Forester would make it? Thanks!
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 жыл бұрын
A Non Forester XT could definitely make it. The black Subaru Outback in the video is stock height with highway terrain tires, a Forester will have better approach and breakover angles so you should be good. But please please please be very careful, this trail is notorious for popping tires. Are you running with others? I'd recommend a good spotter and another vehicle to ride with. Take care!

As an owner of a Subaru Outback,I think your enthusiasm for going off road is great. I'm hesitant about lift kits as it messes up the drive train geometry and causes premature failure of certain parts. Has anyone bent a lower control arm?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 жыл бұрын
W G, thanks! I don’t per say mean to intentionally go offroad, I just like to go on adventures. Many times it involves taking a dirt road to a remote destination. As far as toughness of Subaru’s suspension, even the newer ones can take quite a beating. Watch my video of my friends 2013 Outback going up a really rough road to the toquerfalls in Utah. I’ll link the video in another comment. I’ve never heard of someone bending a coontrol arm, but I have seen tie rods and axles go out.

2” lifts tend to be the max without issues, but people occasionally have issues. Above that and you need to do a body lift. For extreme lifts an engine drop is needed.

Gerhard Tratter I’m not sure what punctured my tire, but I believe it happened after reaching the peak. Perhaps when going through the mud pit. Another guy also had side wall blow out, and we both went through that mud pit. As far as traction, I think these new Dynapro’s did a bit better than my old set. This trail seemed much easier this time around.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring I am not trying to come across as the expert. Since November I traveled now about 1000 miles on off road trails in Death Valley. I always air down to 20 front 18 back and have gone as low as 14 and 12 for really hard sections. Low and slow pays off. That's all, over and out, hope to see you soon. Are you coming to Utah?

Gerhard Tratter id love to run a lower psi, but I have 17 inch wheels and I’m really lacking sidewall. What is your wheel tire setup? Maybe down the line I’ll convert to a 4 pot setup so I can run 15 inch wheels.

@JonDZadventuring. I’ve been debating for months about what tires I want to get for my AWD SUV. I want to do a 1.5” spacer lift and 29” A/T tires. But unfortunately between the finances and the reluctance to mess up my warranty I can’t for another 40k miles. Since this vehicle is currently my family hauler I can’t do to much. What I want is something severe snow rated and all terrain rated in a 27-28” tall tire on my stock 18” rims. But I can’t seem to find anything that small in a A/T tire. I can’t afford to buy rims so it must fit my 18” rims. Do you have any suggestions?

Hey Jon, what kind of mpg do you get, and did it change much when you changed wheels
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 жыл бұрын
Richard, when I changed out of my 18 inch wheels and OEM tires to 17 inch wheels with Yokohama G015’s, yes I did notice a difference. I went from being able to get 27mpg (USA mpg) at 70mph and dropped to about 25 mpg. I notice that if I drive faster than 70 mph, my MPG’s seem to get much worse. My stock Highway tires would only drop to about 24 mpg if I drove 80. My have new tires now and they’re a bit worse by about 1 mpg.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, and in case you were wondering. My mpg numbers above are the highest I can get on the highway. I really pay attention to my MPG’s during long trips out to my adventures. I’m pretty happy Averaging 24+ mpg with my All Terrain tires and hitch cargo basket. This difference is night and day compared to the FJ cruiser i used to drive. I’d get about 14 highway at 70-75mph.

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 5 жыл бұрын
Richard, the only thing I can think about is carrying too much weight. 2014 - 2018 FXT’s are specced to get 28 mpg hwy. Oh! What fuel are you running? You can only achieve those numbers with premium fuel. Worse case scenario, your CVT is going bad and your not getting 100% power to the crank. 2014 and 2015 FXT’s can have a transmission seeping due to a bad gasket. Check out this link for more TSB’s. I love driving my FXT around and all, but there’s a reality to driving around a turbo Subaru. You have to tend to them and take care of them like they’re a queen. www.subarucomplaints.com/cvt/

tracerit we entered through the south entrance which splits off into Old Dale road and leads us into BLM land. At the time (2 weeks ago) the park was still opened to the public, but it is never allowed for anyone to drive off designated roads and lay down their track marks or kill vegetation. We were far away from anyone doing such activity. As I said in the video, the only place to really offroad inside the park is Geology tour road.
