Nice work. Good projections. Scale is a big off. Canyon should be much larger. Camera track doesn't create a good parallax with the left corner of the balcony at around 1:29.

Are the projections all done from one photo or multiple angles and blended together? If you used multiple photo's where did you get the sources for it. Did you take them yourself. Looks very good, very sharp and high res.
@FireballVFX

It was done from one photo but from different angles in order to create parallax motion. I took the photo somewhere from the internet. Thank you for your compliments.

Not the shadows in the image. I mean when i try to sculpt in the geometry, there's seems to be shading/ smoothing problems. I've tried sub dividing it but to no avail. If you still don't know what im talking about, ill post a pic :)

Thank you! Trees are hard to projection map, as they move. especially when there are leaves on them. You would need a tree model for the best result.
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
If you mean the shadows that were already on your still picture that you are projecting onto the model - than you need to paint it out in Photoshop. Maybe you could send me the screenshot of what "shadows" you are referring? I could then advice something.

What size is the finished image in photoshop? The camera seems to pan about 180°, is your finished extension 3840x1080 or is the whole thing broken down in multiple PS files? I'm not sure if I'm making much sense. I worked on a Desert scene a while back ago and I just did 1920x1080 side by side.
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
The original image of the canyon and the finished image in PS was 6000 x 2175px. In 3d software you can project PS layers from different camera positions and affect the final outcome in the way you desire. Where can I see you desert project?

my god ! i wanna do it on my C4D !!! fantastic work ! would you recommend some particular tutorials to learn about how to do it ? - i Wonder how the basic geometry can be done that well, when the base is just a 2d picture ... i'm amazed at how such basic geometry can trick you when you see it moving ... and i know itg's used a lot in VFX for cinema. ( the martian for example ) . - wondering too how the camera movement can be imported into C4D - wondering how you're doing it with the lighting, it matches the scene very well. ... Thanks, great work !
@xplorer3475
@xplorer3475 7 жыл бұрын
thank you very much George !! i saw a few tutorials since, and i didn't even know that i had "projection man" in my C4D, that's cool ! - for the camera tracking, i guess i should use blender or maybe something else hopefully free, since on my c4d prime i don't have this feature.- about the lighting, you didn't even put an hdri, or an white environment color or something ? no specular, nothing ? - i didn't know about the color grading and color correction, learn curve, rgb matching ... but i always wanted to know what was this cool pass i could see in the vfx breakdowns ... so that's the thing, ok, will look for it ! - i understand that it can be easy to match a cube in a scene, with projection man, but a canyon, wow ... i Wonder how you've made it.you should do a tutorial someday ! i'd buy it. yours is a very complete setup.

@@FireballVFX can you make tutorial on it please
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliments. )) It sure does create the real-like illusion of object's presence. This technique is called projection mapping or also known as camera mapping. There are many tutorials on youtube that can be valuable to learn from. The advanced one is called "Advanced Digital Matte Painting Techniques with Garrett Fry", however it is for maya, but you can see the process and methods of making advanced projection mappings. The more available video tutorials I recommend you to start from is from DIGITAL MEAT. He explains it step by step and very well. He has got a channel on youtube and the website: digitalmeat.uk/. Just type "mapping" in search. Never imported camera movement myself - but I guess that can be done. First needs to be exported from other software of course. ) The lighting to match the scene is more known as coloring. I would recommend to learn about "color grading" and "color correction" in videos in general. Learn curves and levels and other color effects. Basically you match it by RGB channel (that is in short). Start with anything online by typing those key words. Then, if you can, get some tutorials on Linda or other tutorial website. Get the tutorials for the software you use or the plugins you want to use. Good luck learning! ; )
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
If you are talking about the tracking software - SynthEyes would be one of the cheapest, I guess. There are other softwares for free. But C4D does have a tracker built in. Try it, maybe you will find it useful. This video I shot on iphone without any additional artificial lighting. Then I only color corrected the filmed footage by matching it to the 2D picture's colors. The only additional light was included in 3D as a sun flare. Thank you! This canyon is something I always wanted to try by challenging projection mapping to the next level for myself. I am actually thinking to make a full package tutorial on projection mapping and other specific VFX skills and put it out for sale. It will contain all possible situations and ways of projection mapping, starting from simple object and ending with complex scenes. It will be showing up here one day on my channel. ; )

how did you tracked so well a camera pan? it is almost impossible in Blender
@FireballVFX
@FireballVFX 3 жыл бұрын
Same old 3d tracking. It all depends on the shot that you have. To track this kind of shot is very tricky/lucky, especially when there is a lot of auto-exposure changes that are happening during the pan. Also the quality from the smartphone camera is low. Basically, an area that you are tracking does not have to change drastically in color and brightness, as well as shape. Even though the 3D tracker is very helpful here, it still might need attention in your guidance and might even require manual tracking.

projection mapping basically uses pictures photoshopped and combined with geometry for constraints.. it looks real because it is photoshopped real locations. They do this a lot in Hollywood.

fascinating how far you can get away on the modeling if the materials that you project onto the model are superb, you have to look carefully to spot the geo error, imagine if you put more time into the modeling, it would be impossible for the audience to realize that it's a 3d projection shot.

It's true. You can scrupulously shape the model to it's micro-level and project the picture onto it. Would be amazing.
