Guangzhou and Shenzhen are the only first tier cities in China's south. That means that they are a haven for expats who want to come to China, so which one is better? It's a tough shootout, but it's a fair one, so we break it down in terms of which features of the cities are more appropriate for foreigners that want to come to China.

I'll definitely be visiting Guangzhou one day in the not so distant future, since I'm learning to speak Cantonese instead of Mandarin, so that will limit me to the Cantonese areas, until I pick up some basic Mandarin at least. I'm glad Cantonese is still holding on there. One language for all of China seems like it would be boring & Cantonese is very beautiful.

Growing up in Macau I never found mandarin to be very useful unless I am speaking to recent migrants or to tourist. Pretty much I spoke Portuguese (I am brazilian) with my friends who speak it or Cantonese with my Chinese friends 🤷🏽‍♂️ Although I do regret not putting so much effort in learning mandarin because it is useful and pretty much necessary f I want to travel outside of Guangdong-HK 😭

I agree. I don't think Cantonese should be a negative. That's like Spain asking Portugal to change their official language from Portuguese to Spanish. Yes, even though their 2 different countries, and Guangzhou is in China, you shouldn't force the locals to give up their language just because their the minority in the outside forces. And honestly, Cantonese is going down in Guangzhou, so if anything the people of Guangzhou should preserve their Cantonese language and culture!

The thing is we have a very proud culture of Cantonese. It is one of the oldest languages in China, way way older then Mandarin, and we just love the language and our culture, a lot. Now that is not to say that Cantonese people don't need to know Mandarin because they should. EVERY Chinese person should know Mandarin and most of them do from learning Mandarin in school. BUT! we will fight you to the DEATH!! if the Chinese government or another entities try to make a Cantonese state Mandarin only. They tried that stupid shit before and we will fight to our last dying breath before we give up Cantonese and our culture.

The Government also moves families around China. From north to south, south to north and city to city to stamp out all the dialects. People moving in can't speak the dialect so they are forced to speak the "National" dialect or learn the local one. Also, the older people from the cultural revolution and while Mao was in power, didn't get to go to school, so many can't read or write and were never schooled in Mandarin. My Mother-in-law can't read or write, she is in her mid to late sixties (as an example).

People really shouldn't judge other's mother tongue and culture or worse try to change or influence them. We all hv different backgrounds and it's unfair to say this language/culture is better than that language/culture and blah blah blah. I am Cantonese speaking born in HK and grew up in South Africa and I am proud of it. Nice videos by the way AdvChina!

everyone, first off don't be a hater, you won't make anyone change their mind by loathing. And secondly, I think eazon already said it. Every Chinese person should learn Mandarin, however, it should not replace their own mother tougue. It's not one or the other, they can co-exist. Why can't people see that? In Europe people speak multiple languages and have media in multiple languages. One DOES NOT have to cancel the other. Personally I find cantonese very useful abroad as well. Such as in England, US, Australia, Malaysia, etc. It has about 80 million speakers around the world so there's no doubt in its usefulness. On the other hand, Mandarin is very useful to communicate with all non cantonese background Chinese. I would say if you speak both languages, you will do Ok in most Chinese communities across the globe.

One thing about Cantonese that you both may not know is that: Cantonese is one of those older Chinese languages that when poems (from Tang dynasty) and verses (from Shung dynasty) are recited with, the rhyming and tonal structure will be all in the correct form; When one uses Mandarin to recite the classic poems and verses, the rhyming and tones will be all messed up.

Cantonese especially Hong Kong version is very funky, fun and zippy. It is able to convey different nuances of humor and incorporate foreign words in quirky and clever ways that the more formal and dare I say more uptight mandarin can. Hong Kong people have a type of humor that is special to them and their language is the best part of it. Stephen Chow's movies sound much funnier in their native Cantonese than in Mandarin it's entire due to the language different. There is an ease and warmth to Cantonese that Mandarin cannot quite capture, there are also many awesome idiomatic saying etc. Overall Mandarin is much easier for most Westerners to learn because there are less tones.

Notice how he roll his eyes when they talk about Poppy, I guess is because despite she has been a lot shorter In China she actually does her research before talking and has an actual positive approach, while Cmilk just talks according to his perception that is plenty times just plain wrong... Not that long ago he had a video saying that to come China you had to fly to Guangzhou, Shanghai or Beijing first, and that's absolutely not true. There is plenty Chinese cities connected with Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, so at least you really want direct flight is quite common you can get to almost any Chinese city with just 1 stepover and the number of Chinese cities with direct flights to Europe and America keeps growing every year... and leave alone his ridiculous claim that Visa to China costs 500$...

However, I know things are not all roses and sunshine. As a coach I need to pick guys up when they are down, and keep them grounded when they up, basic realistic enthusiasm. The videos you two make are great and have done that for me. I understand you can never truly be 100% prepared, but your perspectives have given me confidence that I can make the transition. The fact your topics touch on negatives, as well as positives is awesome. It creates a grounded level of anticipation and expectations. Thank you for helping ease my anxiety a bit and keeping me grounded in my expectations.

I dont know why you guys keep on talking down on Chinese healthcare, It is most of the time 1/10th of the cost in the USA, much faster also, eventhough you do get less privacy, but its a bit of a give and take. Making a specialist doctor's appointment in high quality hospitals in China usually take less than 1-2 days, while in the US it can take well over 1 month. Yes public hospital sucks in China, but nobody forces you to go to public hospital, there are tonnes of international, high quality hospitals around big cities in China.. yes it costs more but still end up a fraction of what you'll pay in the US Guangzhou Modern Cancer hospital is actually one of the best in the world in term of cutting edge treatment for cancer, it is a well established international hospital with patients from all over the world.. recently they held a big exhibition here in Singapore. Hongkong University-Shenzhen hospital is also very modern. there are many hospitals like this throughout Chinese big cities, I really dont think your medical need will not be met.
@Ishingloo

I kind of agree with you on this one. The upside to "crappy public hospitals" is that they're...there. Nothing like that back in the states. I think they know though. It probably gets exhausting qualifying it with appreciation every time you criticize it.

I told them in a old video. They over estimate how good western hospitals are. The doctors in the U.S. knows very little, i'm not saying all. For example, there was a test for these doctors in the U.S.. They were given an MRI scan of a brain and they had to determine what the issue was. Only 50% were about to identify there was a problem, the other 50% thought the person was fine. Of the 50% who could've identify the problem only less than 15% could tell it was cancer. Of those only a few percent knew it was a late stage in cancer. I am mentioning this because my mom was diagnosed was lung cancer. She had surgery when the cancer was at stage 1B; the doctor said there were no problems after the surgery. 3 month later my moms leg was hurting for an unknown reason. We go to our doctor at University of Michigan Hospital (Top 5 in the world) and they said it's no big deal it's just from exercising. 6 month later, my mom was taken to the E.R. cause the pain on her leg was out of control. It was later determined that her cancer from her lungs had metastasized to her legs. A few weeks later, a friend who also has lung cancer (different mutation) told my mom that if her cancer has metastasized to her leg then it probably has to the brain. Went to the hospital and we told the doctors to get an MRI to check, doctors said there shouldn't be... My parents forced them. What do you know, 5 tumors on the brain. Wait but that's not all, asked for doctors advice on what steps to take. They highly recommended chemo, but everyone knows chemo is deadly and has a very low chance of working. We figured that we can try a clinical trial. U of M doctor strongly disagreed. However, at this point, my parent were sick of the U of M doctors because they were very incompetent and ignorant. They decided to go to Oregon and test out a clinical trial drug there. As a result my Mom's cancer had shrunk significantly and has stabilized. She told me if she had kept listening to the U of M doctors sh probably would've died. BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE... The Oregon radiologist can't understand the MRI's that they take so my mom has to fly to U of Pitt hospital to get it check. Long story shot, American hospitals are way overrated. Our family has countered way too many people who suffered the same as my mother. The lack of knowledge, ignorance, and incompetence from the U of M hospital ruined my mother (gone through many surgery from bone replacement from the leg to gamma knife on the brain). If they were more skilled they would've prevented a lot. The only reason why american hospitals rank highly is because they have more money and equipment/medicine, but all those are useless if the doctors can't utilize them correctly. As a person who has witness American Hospitals and have entire mom's side of the family working for Chinese hospitals, when it comes to knowledge, Chinese doctors better off. I feel like what's happening to Winston and C-Milk (Especially C-Milk) is that they have overestimate shit here because they experienced it. Too much media and the facade of the well designed hospitals makes them bias. I know this is a long comment but it's coming from the from deep inside.

One last thing, Chinese hospitals are nothing compared to U.S. Hospitals. My mom's surgery expenses was 200k, this is with good insurance. Total excluding insurance was nearly 1 million dollars. If we include all the medicine that shes been on... 1 month bottle of cancer drug is 10k. Enough said.

Interesting video. Two comments: 1, Have you ever been to Vietnam? A comparison between Vietnam and China would be interesting. 2, Winston looks kind of bored or awkward whenever the other one is talking. It might improve the video if Winston tried to make eye contact a little more so it looks like he is interested and listening. That would help it seem more like a natural conversation, rather than Winston just waiting for his turn to speak.

Cyiero, well disregard the adjectives for a sec, these are very subjective and not really the main point anyway. Do you not think that it would look a it more natural if he was looking at the other one and listening to him as though it was a genuine conversation? This is how the other guy looks at him. I have certainly seen him looking confident in many of his videos, but that is not how I would describe him in this video. When he is talking yes, but not while the other guy is talking. Surely you can see that where he looks and the placement of his hands appears fairly awkward; or uncoordinated if you prefer? If you rewatch the video and compare Winston's body language when the other guy is talking to the body language of the other guy when Winston is talking, you can clearly see that the other guy is more relaxed and more confident in his mannerisms.

I don't see it. In his first sentence, he looks at Matt 3 times. In his second sentence, he looks at Matt 5 times, all the while looking at the camera, to keep the viewer feeling somehow involved in the conversation. They are both addressing the viewer, with the topic at hand. Over all I find him cordial towards who ever he is speaking to, and shows concern for the feelings as others, like when Poppy showed up, he was keen on making sure Poppy didn't feel neglected, even though they were still wrapping up their conversation.

For all the things you said are good about Shenzhen, why not just go to HK? You guys are in Guang Dong... and if someone wants to see "real" Guang Dong they're gonna see Guangzhou, no? Guess what? Maybe some people actually want the southern Chinese / Cantonese culture... not a place in the south that is taken over by Mandarin northern culture and international stuff.
@krollpeter
@krollpeter 6 жыл бұрын
The thing that annoys pretty soon in Guangzhou is the behaviour of the people. Spitting, unhygienic behaviour even urinating or defecating in public, jumping Q's, shouting at each other, all this is everywhere, but more around in Guangzhou. I could live in Guangzhou, it has a certain flair, but not anymore in a purely local area.
@hultonclint
@hultonclint 6 жыл бұрын
Is that not the southern Chinese culture in general? It seems like Shenzhen is this exception-a place (better) for foreigners, for an international crowd, for migrants from other parts of China. One can certainly advise "outsiders" to go to the more accessible place, but it seems disrespectful or something to expect (by comparison) a place of local culture to conform to the standards in an exceptional place. I've lived in India and have an ongoing relationship with the place; specifically, I go to the Punjabi region. Punjabis have a special culture within their region, and they are also many of the Indians you will find abroad. I speak Punjabi so I can communicate with the people there in THEIR language, even if they can understand the "national" language, Hindi. They want to communicate in their language and to see their own language thrive. And it does-when I'm in other countries (I'm American), I find Punjabis and talk to them when I can't speak the language of that country, for example in Paris and Hong Kong... It's just rude speaking to them, when their language is Punjabi and my language is English, in the Hindi language-to address them in the language of the central power of their nation-state. (And if I do that, it reminds them of the government stooges or the past colonizers.) Now obviously, people do whatever they need, and any gesture of communication that works is good! I just thought it was strange to write off Cantonese as a useless language, especially coming from people that have chosen to make their lives in a part of the world where Cantonese is the native language... and who are MARRIED to Cantonese speakers! What Cantonese wants to hear that curled-tongue shrr-shrr-xhh language?

Winston doesn't seem to care about Hong Kong that much. His previous married ended partly because he didn't want to move to HK, when he could have done so as his wife was from there. Unless you're moving from one branch of an international firm to one based in Hong Kong, it's also a lot easier to find work as a foreigner in Shenzhen. Rent is also about a fifth of what you'd expect to pay for a similar place in Hong Kong.
@hultonclint
@hultonclint 6 жыл бұрын
OK, I hear you guys. I guess if one HAD to move to China, one might be looking for such a "convenient" place to "bear" it. But who really has to? I have mad respect for Winston and Matt, but sometimes I am puzzled by their (seeming) lack of interest in Cantonese culture. And certainly a visitor (not someone moving to China to live) would not be interested in Shenzhen just because of tech and cute young girls on the street. (I mean, I'm interested in the cute girls, but you could seek them out in the more "vibey" cities... or, again, just go to HK.

I am a Chinese guy living in USA. I watched many of your videos about China recently. I DO see a lot of problems of every country including America but I tend to be positive about USA or I can't explain WHY I want to stay in USA instead of going back to CHINA. From that point I don't understand why you guys have to stay in CHINA since it sounds like a hell to you . The only reason I can figure out is that you guys make a living on You Tube by bashing CHINA. You do have right to express your opinions based on fact. Chinese people will definitely know you intend bona fide or malevolently. WELL What a pity life while you chose to lie when you can work hard honestly (you both look like young and not disabled)! Please be sincere about your life and find some real job and make contributions to wherever you live! Be mercy to yourself and GOD will look after you then ! By the way you get what you paid for in any country ! Quit being cheap and complaining ! Be a real MAN instead of being a crying baby ! PLEASE! Not all what they said in their video are facts! Quite a few information are misleading !constructive criticism should be based totally on truth ! It is weird to go to a foreign country to complain for 10 years. If complaining shows their love to China what they really did to make China better ? (Do you even pay taxes for your income from You Tube in China ) On the contrary their videos interfere people’s willing to experience China by themselves ! I prefer to live in USA because all my families my social link and my career all bundled to USA. I am positive about this country and appreciate the opportunity here(I am a biomedical engineer and I fulfilled all my education from US academic institutions). I hope USA doing better day by day .I do not bash a country while I am benefiting from it. I believe it is basics of being human being when even a dog will appreciate and stay loyal. It is not even about which country is better ! The way they stayed in China for 10 years and complained about almost everything and then still not leaving makes me confused ! Anybody can tell me why they are still in China and feeling bad everyday ?! It doesn't make any sense unless they have to make a living on social media by doing this ! Can't both of you find a real job to be an engineer , researcher or just a dish washer . Bashing a society doesn't create any fortune and being negative does not solve any problems! Find yourself better life wherever you like and move on !

China is a controlled materialistic country where the population is mostly robots doing what they are told and people judge everyone by their wealth not human qualities. USA has different problems with corrupt corps running the govt ; serious Health problems from garbage supermarket processed food and a medical industry taking advantage of all the diseases. Both countries are becoming Godless and if you look thru History all the great civilizations that stop worshiping God fell into ruin shortly thereafter.

+Michael Bradley: Well, I'm not a pervert, but I kind of know what you're saying. And here is the answer. Most men pretty much stay the same, but they are expected to change when they get older. The recognition that they haven't significantly changed from when they were in their 20s earns them the moniker of "pervert".
@Rationalific
@Rationalific 6 жыл бұрын
+David Brown: Dude, I don't know what you're on, but you completely missed the point of my comment. The "perversion" talking about is simply a man continuing to be attracted to attractive women. "Perversion" only comes into the picture based on that culture (that varies by individual, place, and time) that judges that man. I will tell you now that I will never be physically unattracted to fit women in their 20s. Now, if I'm in my 20s, society has no problem with that. However, as people age, even if they keep their same preferences, society expects (wrongly) for us to change, so that 60-year-olds are expected to be most attracted to other 60-year olds. I'll tell people right now, that's not going to happen, even if 60-year-olds are married and in love and find each other attractive. Still, it won't be the case that 20-year-olds will ever become unattractive. One other thing to point out is that Winston isn't even an old dude. As someone probably somewhere around his age, I think he's still pretty young!

I agree with you. The vast majority is definitely not attractive. There is literally just 1 out of 1000 women that can be considered attractive (I counted that, so it is a serious/legitimate statistic). I guess you must have some kind of asian fetish (which I don't have). Yeah, and chinese men probably will like me as well because I do not steal their wifes.... hahaha. However, as a foreigner girls are extremely easy. But I personally have no desire to make use of this situation. So when I go to china for me it is more like going to a monastery. Black women vary. A lot to do with life style habits. If they are candidates for early onset diabetes type 2 then no, that 's very unattractive. But there isn't just one black woman type. There is more DNA diversity in Africa than the rest of the world put together which makes sense as all modern humans outside Africa are descended from a few groups which moved out of Africa.
