The science of twisting is so fascinating--I've been watching (not doing) gymnastics for ages and wondering how gymnasts did twists in the air vs on the floor. I know artistic gymnastics isn't your sport, but do you happen to know what kind of twisting is used for the twisting Yurchenko skills on vault?
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
these are the only ways to do it. Vault uses a combination of all, contact twist pushing off the table, cat twist as they snap straight from an arch into a straight shape as they drop an arm or elbow to the side, whilst also going from a slightly wider shape into a small shape. It's all the same just a lot faster and everything is on a smaller scale because it doesn't take much to spin a body when skis aren't attached

Don't panic! haha There are plenty of other ways to get twists done, eg. throwing your head into it, whipping your body around and twisting off the ground. This is simply the way the mechanics work and that's all. As I'm glad you've discovered, they do work efficiently, but you will over time develop your own "style" and the way that feels best for you.
@dandanschmidt8 жыл бұрын
My body forgot what a back full felt like shortly after high school graduation - once my practice time decreased. I would do a back layout to a "Y" and then I would pull my arms in to one side and then look over that shoulder. I slowly degraded to a "contact back-full" (probably because I started to twist earlier and earlier as I forgot what my arms were supposed to do). But then I eventually degraded to a "back-head drop" lol. I've been afraid to try them again ever since. I'll have to try your arm drop technique to see if I can work back up to a proper back-full again. Thanks for the video!

Many people forget to keep their entire body tight from the tip of their toes to the tips of their fingers, weather they are extended up or twisting keeping tight body control is also Very important to an effortless twist. Also twisting in the same direction forwards and backwards helps .....

When i do a layout i end up about 1.5/2m behind my starting point. Do you have a tip solution or drill i could try?
@aerialskier4 жыл бұрын
that means your whole body is tipping backwards onto your heels in order to create the angle for rotation. Do the Backdrop drills until they're amazing, making sure that you are pushing out of your toes off the trampoline. A drill i use for people who struggle with this is to start at the end of the trampoline, heels nearly on the springs, and jump forwards (but rotating backwards) to your back, to learn how to press the hips into rotation rather than completely relying on a lean back.

This is for form though, I'm self taught and use contact twisting and throwing my arms diagonally over my shoulder. A lot of people people do this and spin incredibly fast
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
it does spin incredibly fast, no doubt about that, there's nothing wrong with contact twist and being a bit messy. It's just safer to do it neatly and for people with less acrobatic ability, possibly easier to learn. Off axis twisting is really fun and very fast but only used in a few sports, i'm a big fan of it though

David Morris Aerial Skier yeah, tricking, parkour, free running and garden trampolining (these aren't proper sports but a lot of people do them) all use it.
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
yes of course, but if you have no clue where you are in the air, which way the ground is, it's much easier to learn it this way, because it eliminates of a lot of variables, then once you're acrobatically talented, you can throw it off axis. i taught myself off axis later on, and can definitely do more twists that way (5)

Hi! Not sure if you’ll respond but I have a question. I have my back full down to a pinch with completely straight body and straight arms but I’m having issues getting enough rotation to do a double full. Any tips?
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
you will need a little bit more power because the twist takes a little energy away from the actual flip. not a whole lot more, but if you set a higher and slower layout, you'll have more time to get the double twist in. It'll come down to how you're doing the double twist, if we're going to be completely mechanical (i'd suggest trying into a pit first or off a diving board) after you drop your first arm to the side, once your have rotated a half twist in that position (with one arm still held up) you then switch them, the other will come down and your first arm drop will lift back up next to your head, that will make you spin very quickly. It won't look nice because one arm is up but once you're feel how it generates twist power you can then make it look nice by cutting the switch movement a little short, and wrapping your arms into your body.

Hello, Davis! How to make a front twist? The back twist to the left begins with the lowering of the left hand, the right one with the right hand! As I understand from the training cradle 1/2 twist is done to study the front twist! And there is just the opposite: for the front twist to the left, the right hand drops! I understand correctly? But it's uncomfortable! Especially when I jump half front twist and lower the right hand, I turn to the right! Thanks for the answer!
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
you are correct, front twist and right arm drop will spin left. I think you are trying to twist too early and throwing your body into the twist which isn't really a right arm drop, it is more like a cartwheel. if you wait until you are upside-down before you drop your arm it will twist in the correct direction
@AlexZulus7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I will try! Should one wait until the moment when the head is down or earlier to lower the hand?

This tutorial is helping me so much! But I am still struggling with one thing, the spotting. When I spin I don't know where I am, even though I can land a round off Full on the floor. Where should I be looking when I spin?
@aerialskier6 жыл бұрын
this is a tricky one because it depends on your twist timing. Basically i would say don't look for it at all until the end. Takeoff and twist with a neutral head and when you start to prepare for landing and stop the twist, then you look. If you twist left you look left and vice versa for right twisting, the ground will come into view.
@rob74884 жыл бұрын
Really great video thanks!! I just have one question - is this twist not more a result of the conservation of angular momentum when changing the lever distance? I'm trying to wrap my head around the physics of it and can't quite cognize how tilting off axis generates the twist in this instance.
@aerialskier4 жыл бұрын
it is conservation of angular momentum, and a transfer of rotation into a perpendicular plane resulting in the body twisting to maintain a stable flight, otherwise it would wobble out of control just like a frisbee without enough spin. One may also explain it as when o ne side is lengthened or shortened with an arm drop, it will in turn get slower or faster respectively in the direction of travel resulting in the determined direction of twist, left or right.
@aerialskier4 жыл бұрын
the length of the lever (arm) and the force behind it determines the bodies counter reaction and therefore how far off axis you become resulting in how fast you will spin

@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
chances are your body isn't tight, or you'have an arch etc. for the best twist, body should be as straight as possible, that's why doing a bigger one is easier because then you don't have to break form to get your feet to the ground. try and keep you arms as straight as possible for as long as you can, and do not look for the ground until you are coming down
@Ngoexcuse7 жыл бұрын
Since there isn't enough time to do the fully exaggerated arm motions of tilt twisting on the ground, what is the best alternative way to move and wrap the arms using this principle?
@Ngoexcuse7 жыл бұрын
I can already do a full on the ground but not very effectively. I would like to learn the proper technique before I go for double fulls. Thank you!
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
you can definitely do a full with straight arms as shown in the video, when wrapping for a double, have the first arm the same and as you bring the second arm down super fast, the first one comes back up slightly and the both then wrap into you body
@BelgianTrickers7 жыл бұрын
Hi man, I'm having an issue with arching back too much when twisting wich leads to overrotating double fulls. What's the worst about this issue is that I've been doing this for 3 years now wich means it's very hard to unlearn that. Could you give me any tips or drills that I could do to get rid of that issue? Thanks you, and very usefull and detailed tutorial!
@aerialskier7 жыл бұрын
well obviously these drill swill help if you run through them and try and do them this way rather than the way that feels comfortable to you. to fix a back arching problem, you'll really need to work on back layouts a lot more, i suspect they have an arch also, and then once you twist it gets more exaggerated. practice doing back tuck / pike / and layouts, in a row one after each other to teach yourself how to takeoff and set different rotations and also how to feel different rotations. the good ol' (and very annoying) back pike is a really good skill to learn to pull your feet over the rotation with you, instead of throw your head. watch the "how to do a good backsault" video for this one i think that will be very helpful
@BelgianTrickers7 жыл бұрын
Okey thank you for all the information!

Hey David, I saw your video on Barani's and noticed that you switched arm drops for each twist direction in the tilt twist. If I'm a right twister, this video says to drop my right arm (2:38) but the Barani video says to drop my left arm (6:06). Is there a reason for this? Thanks!
@aerialskier4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dylan, Yes that is correct and this is an often very confusing component. Indicating that I still need to explain this better in future videos. When you do a back full you drop your right arm down. It's not the fact that it's your right arm, its the place in which your arm drops. eg. if you stand up and pretend your rotating backwards (lets say your feet are lifting up towards the door) and you drop you right arm, it drops towards a spot on the wall, that spot on the wall is where a drop needs to happen for you to spin right. If you now turn to face the other way, and imagine your body is rotating forwards, you feet are still lifting up towards the door, your body is rotating the same as before it's just facing the other way, there still needs to be a drop in the same place as before - to the wall, it just now happens to be your left arm that can do that. So it's more about where the drops happen, and that determines, which arm needs to be doing it. I hope that helps
