All this and more is discussed with University of Canterbury Motorsports Formula SAE team leader Paige Cuthbert while Tim White was at Highlands Motorsport Park to view their competition again against Auckland University. Construction, vehicle dynamics vs powertrain vs aero considerations, all aspects of a Formula SAE team build are touched on along with how the team takes things from simulation testing in software like Ansys through to wind tunnel testing while measuring the difference in expectations vs reality, along with some ‘low tech’ real-world testing to also help confirm the results.
What is Formula SAE? Also known as FSAE or Formula Student, it is a University level student design competition which is run and governed by SAE International (aka Society of Automotive Engineers International). The concept is to develop a small Formula (single-seat open-wheel car) race car which is then evaluated by a number of different static and dynamic considerations and events.
