Let's have a look at one of my first aero packages that I designed back in 2012 for the 2013 Formula Student season.
Let's have a closer look at:
- How did we change the packaging to enable an efficient aero concept?
- How did the automatic DRS work?
- Why did we mount the rear wing to the rear suspension rockers?
Formula Student is a great series to learn all the skills for your later career.
Have you been a member in a Formula Student team and did the experiences help you in your career?
Let me know in the comments below!

It’s a shame my school never showed interest in this beautiful competition. I would have loved to work on it.

Great video as always! That wing setup, actually increasing the rear ride height with downforce, is absolutely fascinating. And the DRS setup actually having to consider sponsorship is something I’d never even though about before. Thanks so much for making these videos!

Very interesting. I was part of my Unis FS team as well. Sadly our car never turned on full power due to problems with the inverters. Once I'm a bit further along I'd really like to join again tbh. FS seems like really valuable experience.

Did you win that year in 2013
@BSport320

No we didn't, we had inverter problems and the car was not as light as the monocoque cars in that year but we all learned a lot and attracted sponsors.

Incredibly impressive. My FS team struggles alot with getting the aero right, do you have any good reading reccomendations, specifically for multi element wing design?

I was looking for the same back in the day but I never found good literature about it. It's basically learning by doing. Slot gap geometry between the profiles alone is a huge topic.

Great Video! Could you do a breakdown analysis on Aston Martins New Valkyrie AMR race car?

If you could go back in time, with what you know now, what would you change about your design, if anything? The objectives you had, favouring efficiency over maximum downforce, were probably a bit of a contrast to other teams at the time, like gfr and Monash.
@BSport320
@BSport320 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was a contrast. We intentionally pushed for efficiency and a low weight aero package. Lap time simulations show that lots of dirty downforce makes you faster but for this first aero package of the team we wanted to learn as much as possible. With the knowledge I have today I would focus more on in-corner downforce, especially because cornering radii in Formula Student are very small.

A lot of great stuff here. I am designing a racecar for my son to drive. This winter I am re working the floor to add a diffuser. My question is, why did you curve the floor instead on making it flat? Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. ✌🙋🏻‍♂️🏁
@BSport320
@BSport320 3 жыл бұрын
Nice stuff and you are welcome! Because the curvature gives you the downforce. The more air you get underneath the car and accelerate there, the more downforce you will get.

Hi! Very informative video as always. I'm entering university next year, so I'm looking into opportunities to participate in formula SAE teams. I aim at engineering related majors as I'm about to apply later this year, but besides that, are there some things that I can start preparing for beforehand to have a better possibility to get into such teams and compete? I would really appreciate it if you can point me to a specific direction, thank you!

I can only tell you about what we were looking for in my team. We were quite focus on people that is able to learn themselve and with compromise with the team. I would tell you to maybe ask via social media with the team your are interested on, and ask them what kind of software do they use (fdm, cad, CFD...) And try to learn something by yourself. Also, it is usual in the interviews to ask technical questions about the department you are choosing (even if you are applying to an static department like business or cost), so it is advisable to study a bit before. And last but not least, be yourself in the interview, be relaxed and if they choose you, be ready to spent quite a lot of hours working but also learning and having fun with your teammates!!
@BSport320
@BSport320 3 жыл бұрын
When I started, we didn't even have interviews. We simply took everybody who was interested. If you are going for a technical role, it's always a good idea to be familiar with the current regulations and to be able to use a design program (catia etc.).

@@BSport320 Thank you! I am still learning CAD softwares, current using Fusion 360. I'm also planning to look into CFD soon after I finish all the application essays.

Didn't that jacking force have negative effects on the cars over all handling? Wouldn't it eventually top out the shock?

It was a relatively small change in rear right height so that wasn't an issue for us.
