I love the Aeropress, the new Aeropress go is an Aeropress for those on the go. For using it backpacking, I'll leave the mug and accessories at home and use it just the same as I do the standard Aeropress. Smaller, lighter, but same great cup of coffee!

You are absolutely spot on with the new Aeropress Go. Ditch the extra gear and just take the working bits. I do the regular method and do carry a second double walled cup with me. I boil enough water for coffee and a hot breakfast. Then maybe a second cup for when camp is all packed up except the coffee gear. I bring the beans just before I head out and use the thin cheap sandwich bags for each brew. The bag then can be used to pack out the grounds and filter. Overall, the Aeropress ROCKS

Thanks for specifying the (only 20g) weight diff between the two models, sans the accessories. That‘s the way I would use a Go if a had one. Love the original AeroPress for backpacking! Given only such a small diff in weight, I‘ll stick with the original - also because it fits way better over the rims of my titanium mug (and any other standard coffee mugs, for that matter). Not only that, but it‘s possible to slide a Porlex Mini grinder right in the Aeropress (without the rubberband crank holder, so you just carry the crank handle separately). The Porlex Mini isn‘t the greatest grinder around, but the size and weight make it natural for use with the Aeropress. The Go seems to offer no added benefit for me. By the way, using a metal filter (instead of paper ones) makes for a richer brew, and means no waste. If you like a finer and more consistent grind at only a slight weight penalty over the Porlex Mini, then try a CrushGrind Colombia. Just got mine 2 days ago and it totally rocks! Fine adjustments are a cinch, and it’s fast, too. The only drawbacks are that it‘s a tad larger and heavier, and cranking it - though smooth - requires a good grip on the cylinder. That is compensated for by a much faster and better grind, and it‘s not even expensive compared with the Porlex. So maybe you‘ll want to try one instead of toting that apparently rather bulky and heavy grinder in the video. And for espresso shots on the trail (rather than big and satisfying mug of coffee), I‘ve fallen in love with the Staresso (minus the glass and glass holder - just pull the shot straight into your usual mug).

Good stuff, Scott! Thanks for the input. You're right, if you already have the Aeropress, the Go is probably not necessary at all. The Porlex should still fit in the Go, but may stick out the end a little. I am one of the small group of people who actually prefer the clean cup that the paper filters provide. I'll have to get one of the smaller hole size metal ones to see if it will filter out more of the sediment. I find the metal ones end up producing a cup closer to a french press. Thanks!

Yeah, I’ve got both and use the go while outdoors … my company is outdoor activity so I’m out a lot or I’m working IT in winter … at home, I use the original, outdoors I use.The Go, not due to weight but more due to packing of it all making it easier and not having to take stuff that lives in my kitchen for everyday use out all the time. Thanks for the video. The aeropress is my standard method also, but I use it with a Fellow filter cap, which has a fine metal filter and kind of a valve that withholds the coffee Til you start to press. So no there is no need for the upside down thing or a second mug. I think it also enhances the taste (I don't like the paper filter). The aeropress go is still hard to get here in Germany and with about 40,-€ it is overpriced also. Especially if you already own a normal aeropress.

Just ordered the Go half an hour ago, and think this is the best choice for me. The cup may not be necessary for everyone, but those titanium cups dont seem ideal for much other than boiling water, and so i will probably use my Trangia cooking pot(s) for both food and coffee when im out camping. For dayhikes, i dont mind carrying an extra pot in addition to the cup. When summer comes, ill probably even start packing my hammock for dayhikes, so i can condition my body to carrying at least a little more weight than the bare minimum... Also doesnt suck to have a comfy hammock to hang up in the shade of some trees, away from ants and stuff on the ground, and with some cinema glasses so i can watch a movie or episode of "married with children" while taking a break 👍

Hey Mark, great video. I hadn't seen this one, I realize it's 2 years old. I use my original AeroPress almost every day, but I don't bring it on the trail to save weight and space. Typically I'm leading expeditions with other people and so we just make a big pot of cowboy coffee from a decent commercial brand, but that of course doesn't compare to brewing your own specialty cup. You mentioned something about coffee on the ultralight trips. Have you tried the Primula Brew Buddy to make a pour-over? I tried the Swift Cup recently (in fact, I still have a few boxes left) but I couldn't ignore the smell of instant coffee, even though the taste was great. I decided that next time, I either bring real coffee or just skip it altogether and take a caffeine pill for my daily fix. In my quest for the perfect solution, I was considering making my own coffee filter bags out of Monolite or Cloud 71, but then hesitated as I don't know if those fabrics can handle hot water well. So doing a search online I found the Primula little filters. They look great and I ordered a few. If they work as advertised then I'm set. That would allow me to roast my own beans, grind them just before the trip, divide up the grounds into individual daily bags and brew the exact amount I need for a cup. I can boil enough water for the coffee, the freeze-dried breakfast, and the rinsing of the filter afterwards. Again, great video! Have a look at the Primula Brew Buddy if you get the chance.
@drytool
@drytool 4 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Prismo to replace the basket on your aeropress go. It has a metal screen and a pressure valve to give you more espresso like coffee. Also, you don't have to turn your aeropress upside down to keep the coffee from dripping out. It is water tight until you apply the set amount of pressure.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 4 жыл бұрын
A few people have suggested that, and I have looked at it in the past. I am one of the people who actually prefer the taste of the coffee and the cleanness of the coffee with a rinsed paper filter. I may end up with a prismo just to be able to do something similar to espresso when I want! Thanks

I pre-grind just before the trip. I don't notice much, if any, degradation in the flavor doing it this way. In fact, I was just out this weekend on a 3 day trip and Rainman said the coffee I made Saturday morning in this was the best tasting cup of coffee he's ever had!

I keep hearing good things about the aeropress but I've been enjoying my V60 for years. Have you ever tried a plastic one? I'm not sure on the weight but it can't be much. I guess the only problem would be you will need a 2nd cup so that will add weight.

To standard press with one pot can't you heat the water and pour it inside the handle/plunger, then continue from there? I'm still rocking a gen 1 aeropress so I don't know if they changed things up much but that was an option with it. Gen 1 same material for plunger and main part, numbers on both of them.

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Spiguyver Backpacking I'll use either the inverted method or the standard method with the aeropress depending on mood but I know some people prefer one way over the other. In your video you mentioned that people that don't use the inverted method will need a separate pot, I was speculating that people that prefer the standard/non-inverted method could also use one pot by pouring the hot water in the piston/handle, setting the press onto the now empty pot, pouring the water from the handle and pressing 'normally'.
@spatter1
@spatter1 4 жыл бұрын
I read that the early 1st gen Aeropresses had volume markings in the plunger to measure the water but those were eliminated at some point. I like the inner part of the plunger to put the stirrer when I am at work. I’ll stir at my desk, put the stirrer in the plunger and press without thinking about where to put the messy stirrer.

@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so if you do it the normal method, you need both a cooking vessel (pot) and your mug. By doing it inverted you can pour the water into the chamber and it won't leak out, so you can let it brew, then turn it over and press it into your pot, which also serves as your mug. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Just out this morning. It was 28 degrees with wind and by the time I got the coffee pressed, it had become too cool to be called a 'hot' cup of coffee. I ended up heating the MSI cup with the coffee in it to get it more than lukewarm. I think that is my only disappointment with the system. In warm weather, it should be fine but... the reason I do coffee when I am out is because it is cold. A regular coffee pot makes hotter coffee (but, I agree not as good).

I just saw this video of yours last night and then came across this Aeropress 'hacks' video and figured I'd share it with you (if you haven't already seen it). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7KdibGdnqjPnpc.html Tip #2 says: Pre-make your espresso shots and dilute them with hot water later for an Americano. That tip might be really handy for camping, especially if you enjoy a cup of coffee at lunch time. You'd only have to clean up once a day and just need to boil water for however many additional cups you want throughout the day. I figure one of the cheapest most flimsy water bottles would be a good enough container to hold the shots in and those can even be crushed flat to take up less space in an outer pocket. I just figured I'd share the 'hacks' video with you. I hope you're enjoying the winter camping right now. 👍
