This is a test of the Afflictor Mini Hybrid broadheads--the Hybrid X Mini & the K2 Mini.
I'm using a Bowtech SR6 at 72# & 27" draw length and Bishop FOC King Arrows, 460 grs.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide... or @Innovative Outdoorsman The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel. They make excellent sharpeners for every type of broadhead.
In case you're not familiar with my new test protocol, here is what I'm doing now:
1. Flight Test--1 field point & 2 broadheads out my by Bowtech SR6 at 40 yds, to see how well they group together.
2. Sharpness Test: I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention.
What are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
3. Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.
4. Penetration Test 1: one shot into a combined medium of 2/3" of rubber mat, 1/2" MDF and Clear Ballistics FBI Grade Gel. This is to roughly simulate the tissue of an animal--hide, bone and muscle/fat.
5. Penetration Test 2: one shot into layers of cardboard.
6. Durability Test: For fixed blade heads, I take up to 5 shots into .22 ga steel plate and then evaluate the damage to the head. This is a good test to see the overall durability of the blades, as well as their connection to the ferrule. For mechanical heads, I take up to 5 shots into 1/2" MDF and then evaluate the damage to the head.
7. Concrete Test. This is a zero penetration test, which is a good test of the overall structural integrity of a head.
NOTE: Of course I understand we don't hunt steel plates and concrete, but all of these tests simply provide DATA POINTS for you to use in determining which broadhead is best for your hunting purposes. A well placed shot with pretty much any broadhead will get the job done most of the time. But why not prepare for the worst and buy the best you can?
If one head can hold up to multiple shots in steel & concrete-and another cannot--all other things equal, wouldn't you want to use the head that can withstand the steel and concrete? And after taking hundreds of animals with my bow, I've seen some bone shots cause more damage to a broadhead than even a cinder block.
The goal for all of us is to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible, and select a broadhead that is as lethal as possible for our bow/arrow set up and for the animal we are hunting.
At the end of each of my broadhead tests, you will find a score sheet listing all the results of the testing, so you can compare heads based on what factors matter to you the most. I also have an overall LUSK GRADE that is an evaluation of how the head performed in all the tests combined.

I purchased a pack of the k2 hybrids ( the black ones ) and I was actually a little disappointed. The main blades were very dull out of the package and would barely shave hair. I tried touching them up but couldn't really get them any sharper. I did kill a doe with it with a passthrough and my arrow was stuck in soft dirt behind her. when I pulled my arrow out the broadhead was gone. After further inspection, the head broke off at the threads inside my insert. I never did find the head. The shot was perfect and the doe went approximately 100 yards with a sparse blood trail. drops here and there. The entry was the size of the head in the closed position and the exit was about a 1 inch slit. I would give them another try but my pet peeve is a dull head. Back to reapers I go! Love your channel!

Interesting design. I like the way they lock open. When locked in the closed position are they easily removed from a broadhead target? Agreed, animals aren't made of concrete. But maybe enter them in a "most explosive category" Ha ha!

Haha. That's funny. When they're locked they are very easy to pull out of a target. I should have noted it, but you can see the back side of the drive keys/bleeders, are sharpened and angled backwards, so they pull out easy.

Have you tested the blackout toxik broadheads yet? I’ve shot them for a few years now and they kill deer well. They’re surprisingly sharp and accurate, quite durable and have easily replaceable blades, and for the price they’re a damn good value. Might be a good test for a ‘value’ based broadhead because they’re a very good head at a surprisingly good price.

@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marcus. Glad you found the channel. I really like the Afflictor's & have taken a lot of animals with them. I'm sure they would do well on elk, if you have the momentum to drive them deep enough. The Minis do penetrate a bit better than the originals, with that smaller cut.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
They do make one; I've not tested it. But the challenge with such a hard impact is that much of the pressure is on that front bolt. They did make it much stronger than it was before, and it is plenty strong for most hunting situations. I'm sure the steel ferrule is much stronger, but the pin is the same.

Very bummed I bought K2 minis probably three weeks ago and I have the older version. I did get the 150 gn version so maybe there could be a difference, but my drive keys are definitely different and it doesn't have that beefy looking screw for the tip. I did sharpen them so I reset the bevel myself.

Well, actually, the new models haven't even been finalized yet. I didn't know that when I tested these. They're still working to make them the best they can be. And the older ones still work fine. I have some and still hunt with them.

Those look mean. I like how stout the leading tip looks. How loose the blades look though... Do you think that the blades wobbling like that could create any deviation or loss of energy in the animal?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
There is a bit of "play" in the components by design. The only problem arises if the drive keys are not depressed fairly evenly; in that case the blades may not deploy...but the "play" helps to prevent that from happening.

Is there any truth to more penetration if your broadhead is flush with the insert? I noticed yours has a little edge & I swear I read in the Ashby book that it improved penetration when it was flush with the head? It makes sense less resistance but what is your opinion? Love your videos best penetration tests out there.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. They're only not flush when the broadhead won't allow it for some reason. In that case, it's very minimal and won't make a quantifiable difference in the mediums I am using in these tests. But for hunting, I would make sure there is no gap.

I've used both very effectively and recommend both. The Sevr 1.5 is more durable on hard impact shots, so it would get the nod if I had to pick between the two. But both are in my top few mech choices.

I've gotten better penetration with the Sevr in the field. But that's not enough to conclude they penetrate better; there are so many factors at play when it comes to penetration.
@phobiarg
@phobiarg 2 жыл бұрын
These heads definitely interest me but the fitment seems pretty poor with the actuator bleeders and blades kind of flopping around as well as the aluminum ferrule being so blunt at the tip. If they could make these more precision machined and maybe mill a recessed pocket in the tip in for the ferrule to sit in so there's no hard edges I'd be willing to consider them over my fixed blades.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Well, they are very precision machined, but there is a bit of "play" in the various components, by design. I know it seems weird, but it's not because of slop.
@phobiarg
@phobiarg 2 жыл бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures I was not intending to say that the machining was bad, that was a poor choice of words. These are super interesting and are the first mechanical in a long time that I'd like to try. I was indeed talking about the slop in the blades and actuator as well as the way the blades leave a gap between the tip and the deployed blades.

The tips are dull by design. They’re super thick and at that bevel, that’s the sharpest they will get, basically. But it won’t hinder penetration out of a high speed bow and will make it more durable. The main blades should be razor sharp.
