This is a Broadhead Battle between 2 very popular heads by G5 Outdoors: the MONTEC & the M3.
I'm using a Bowtech SR6 at 72# & 27" draw length and Bishop FOC King Arrows, 460 grs.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide.com or @Innovative Outdoorsman The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel. They make excellent sharpeners, including their new "Stay Sharp Guide 344" designed for 3 blade single piece heads like these.
Check it out here: • 344 sharpener by Stay ...
In case you're not familiar with my new test protocol, here is what I'm doing now:
1. Flight Test--1 field point & 2 broadheads out my by Bowtech SR6 at 40 yds, to see how well they group together.
2. Sharpness Test: I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention.
What are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
3. Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.
4. Penetration Test 1: one shot into a combined medium of 2/3" of rubber mat, 1/2" MDF and Clear Ballistics FBI Grade Gel. This is to roughly simulate the tissue of an animal--hide, bone and muscle/fat.
5. Penetration Test 2: one shot into layers of cardboard.
6. Durability Test: For fixed blade heads, I take up to 5 shots into .22 ga steel plate and then evaluate the damage to the head. This is a good test to see the overall durability of the blades, as well as their connection to the ferrule. For mechanical heads, I take up to 5 shots into 1/2" MDF and then evaluate the damage to the head.
7. Concrete Test. This is a zero penetration test, which is a good test of the overall structural integrity of a head.
NOTE: Of course I understand we don't hunt steel plates and concrete, but all of these tests simply provide DATA POINTS for you to use in determining which broadhead is best for your hunting purposes. A well placed shot with pretty much any broadhead will get the job done most of the time. But why not prepare for the worst and buy the best you can?
If one head can hold up to multiple shots in steel & concrete-and another cannot--all other things equal, wouldn't you want to use the head that can withstand the steel and concrete? And after taking hundreds of animals with my bow, I've seen some bone shots cause more damage to a broadhead than even a cinder block.
The goal for all of us is to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible, and select a broadhead that is as lethal as possible for our bow/arrow set up and for the animal we are hunting.
At the end of each of my broadhead tests, you will find a score sheet listing all the results of the testing, so you can compare heads based on what factors matter to you the most. I also have an overall LUSK GRADE that is an evaluation of how the head performed in all the tests combined.

I haven't tried the M3, but I have taken deer with the Montec. Here's what I do. I use Montecs early season, when leaves are thick. The penetration is just unmatched. They will pass through like they didn't even slow down. About mid November I switch to Swhakers. If I had to pick one....I'm going Montec. It does what it says on package. And if you buy the sharpening G5 sharpening tool, reusabilty is top notch. G5 does NOT make a bad product.

I've been watching you for years now and love the videos!! I have a theory about quite broadheads. I used to shoot the blackhornet, great broadhead but noise. I could hear it all the way to the target but sence switching to the Kudu my arrow is dead quite. I'd love to see some take on that challenge. Yes game can react to our bow noise but the longer the shot i think the more they react to the noise of the arrow. Thanks for all the cool content, I'm also a broadhead nut. ; )
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've read a lot about that and tested it quite a bit myself. I've just never seen an animal react to arrow noise--and that includes up to a 100 yd shot on an elk and multiple 50+ yd shots on whitetail. A moving noise could be a bird flying by or a bug zipping by. But a static , pinpointed bow shot noise is completely different. Arrow flight could be an issue, but I've just never seen it.

Those are some awesome tests to really push their limits. I figured that you would give the slight “edge” to the M3 since it had better edge retention at 425 vs 550. I actually have used the Montec before but never on an animal sadly. I went away but came back last year with the Montec CS 100 grain. I won a 6 pack of 100 grain M3s a few months ago, but haven’t tried them out yet. I would have picked the 125s if they had them available at the time.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures 1/16 of an inch is virtually imperceptible to the eye and probably would have no impact on catching a vein or artery. I would agree they overall should be a tie but I would take the M3 for say an elk because of the edge retention and really wouldn't worry about penetration as evidenced by the same number of layers in the cardboard.

Lusk, one thing I've often wondered is the difference in penetration between a broadhead right out of the package versus a broadhead that has been sharpened with the Stay Sharp Broadhead system. Could be a cool video just saying. Love your videos!
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I am going to address that in an upcoming vid called Broadheads & Bloodtrails. In short, sharpness does not affect penetration nearly as much as people think. But it does affect how effectively it cuts tissue, veins, and arteries. So all other things equal, a sharper head will draw more blood than the less sharper head.

I have tried several heads of mechanical nature but always come back to the montec 100gr. I have shot some really nice deer with the montec and all have went down in sight. I tried the ramcat a few years back and clipped the bottom of the spine. It broke two blades and bent the other one so bad it wasn't effective anymore. Montec heads can be used over and over as long as you don't hit a rock. This year I have sevr heads for my crossbow and a backup 1.5" sevr for my compound. Hope to take a doe with a sevr to check its performance. I would love to see the carbon express quad pro beads tested. I have a spare pack I can send.

Great post and timely for me. I shoot a crossbow. The G5/125 has been my go-to-point for years. However, at 440 FPS, they do tend to drift right after 30 yards. I went to a rear deploy 100 gr and it restored spot on accuracy. But.. The point I want to share is in-the-field performance. The GR/125 always a pass thru, bear, WT buck and bull elk. I would worry that if the M3 stayed in the animal, it will clog the bleed hole. I have shot length-wise thru several WT bucks, that I throat shoot, with the G5/125 . I went back to G5/125 earlier today as I prep for mule deer, bull elk and bear. Now at 375 FPS, spot on at 40 yards. For me, no need to try the solid twin. The rear deploy may come later in the fall seasons for close blind based shots at WT. I have nothing but bad outcomes with brands like 150gr Swacker and 100 gr Rage. Others will differ but hopefully they have watched and listened to your thorough presentation. Stay safe, 👍🏹🎯🇺🇸🍀😷💉💉💉👍🏹

As someone who used the Montec for a few years, I found the Montec made more noise going through the air because of its open design. They were accurate, but I believe the noise they made flying through the air did affect how animals such as deer reacted to the shot at longer distances of 35+ yards.

They’re pretty standard. I even cut them from a much larger piece of MDF. Due to their length they have a bit of drag that impedes penetration in mediums like these, that don’t peel back when cut. Meat does tend to peel back when cut-but bone does not.

Well, the Montec is 1 1/8" and the Exodus is 1 1/4", so I don't do a Battle any more if the specs are different. But you can compare the scores of each and see the "battle" cause the tests are identical. And in that comparison, there is ZERO comparison. The Exodus is sharper, holds its edge better, more durable, flies better, penetrates deeper and has a larger cut. I can't understand anyone choosing a Montec or M3 over an Exodus.

for the sharpness test, at what point would the broadhead be unacceptable to shoot effectively. For example what is the most grams or score would you not shoot at an animal.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, and one that's really difficult to answer. It largely depends on the steel being used and the blade geometry, not just the initial sharpness. Many heads that have thinner blades, gradual bevels, and cheaper steel are super sharp out of the box, but lose that sharpness after passing thru hide--so for most of the animal, they are really "dull." But all that being said, sharpness has little to do with penetration anyway. It does affect the effectiveness of the cutting, but not so much the penetration. And if you push anything with a decent size cut thru an animal, it's going to die.

Judging by your scores, the edge retention should probably have been the deciding factor. The M3 (from your testing) definitely edged out the Montec. Well, the M3 was better in edge retention, but neither were super sharp and it was slightly better in penetration in one of the mediums. But the Montec has a larger cut, so that evened it out in my mind. If I were hunting deer with either head (which I won't be) I would choose the Montec just based on having a larger cut.

Both held up very well the m3 won but they are the exact same head 1 simply sacrificed length and width to fill in the open areas. But overall fantastic job.

Well, if you want a larger cut than 1 1/16, they're not the exact same head :) Personally, the M3 is way too small of a cut for deer hunting, in my opinion. The Exodus for example has a 1 1/4" cut, and penetrates much deeper, is sharper, and more durable.

I love the Montec. First broadhead I ever used. Fortunately, it was also head that made me discover Dr. Ashby after I hit a doe shoulder and just stopped on a quartering towards. Got one lung I am sure but she was tough and got back into the woods. Next morning i found where she initial laid down, but the coyotes pushed her further north and got her. I found her later picked apart. Never did find the broadhead. Hopefully one of those yotes got a surprise in their bite. I have long since updated my arrow system and heads, but still think the Montec is a solid head.

I wasn't surprised that the 125 Montec curled on the tip. I failed to notice that a buck a few years back had his offside leg back a little. Double lunged him but the movement after the shot curled the tip. Huge pressure from the large bone @ the top of the leg where it meets the shoulder. I was never able to get the Montecs scary sharp like u can with the Bishop Holy Trinity. However I lost 1 of them when a doe turned & quartered away as I released my arrow. The arrow stopped after going through the whole body cavity & jammed in her brisket/leg pit. I did find the hair covered in blood from the exit wound. The coyotes got her. My neighbor with greenhouses was happy I took her out. Would have been nice to recover her. She caused alot of trouble for him. I wonder how the Deepower would compare to that M3?🤔

Well, I only do Battles of heads with very similar specs. You can always look at the score sheets and compare any heads to each other. That being said, I've not done a formal test of the ST Standard. I used to hunt with them though. I've asked ST for some Standards to test, but they've not responded. If someone donates a pack, I'll gladly test them.

I was once told that if you could get a BH that would cut the animal in half… that’s what you should shoot. Neither of these had much penetration in your gel test and despite pretty marked post shot sharpness tests they had equal penetration thru the layers of cardboard. Neither would make my cut!

James, you're correct--and same MDF. They don't penetrate as well as many other heads--at least in these mediums. Less surface area usually creates deeper penetration, again, at least in these mediums.

These are pointless displays dude
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Well, thanks for watching. But pointless? Not at all. The goal of these tests is to provide data points for how each head performs in a consistent test. The tests reveal the limits of what a head can do; it's strengths & weaknesses. Pretty much any broadhead can kill an animal with a well placed shot. But there are some that perform much better than others and thus stack the odds of success more in your favor. By comparing the data points, you can find the head that works best for you and your hunting set up and the animals you're pursuing. For example, if one head loses a blade on one shot thru the steel plate and another looks brand new after 5 shots--all other things equal--wouldn't you rather hunt with the head that could handle that kind of impact?
