Affordable Walkable Cities: Cleveland, Ohio

We will look at cities that are just plain underrated. We will focus on specific neighborhoods that are walkable and bike-able to services and amenities within a reasonable distance. The 15 minute city in America?
What actually qualifies as Affordable? We will be looking at cities with average rent and median home sale price.
What qualifies as Walkable? The entire city doesn’t have to be walkable since that’s unrealistic but they must have at least several neighborhoods with a good walk, bike and transit score. The goal is to find an area within the city where you can absolutely live car free.

Lakewood
With its prime location on Lake Erie, Cleveland offers picturesque lakefront views and a range of outdoor recreational activities. Visitors can stroll along the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Reserve or enjoy the sandy beaches of Edgewater Park.
Cleveland's Rapid Transit system consists of three rail lines: the Red, Green and Blue Line and The RTA operates free trolley services in downtown Cleveland
Cleveland is known for its warm and friendly Midwest hospitality.

I’ve never heard anyone describe Cleveland as comfortable but I don’t hate it.

Seven miles from downtown Lakewood is a destination residence for recent college grads. Not only affordable but walkable. As for comparison to Pittsburg & Buffalo they are fun however the best Metropolitan park in the nation is in CLE with 22,000 acres, best / largest theatre district outside NYC, number 1 orchestra in U.S. Neither Pitts nor Buffalo are on a great lake with tournament fishing, beaches & stunning views. There are 3 light rail lines & one has a station in the airport that takes you to the Eastside ( cultural/ great mansions) Westside ( Lakeview suburbs,great schools) , downtown & the world class Cleveland Clinic In the University Circle research center. The video was looking for protected bike paths & the best starts in downtown along the river connects to the Tow Path along the Erie Canal then with some connections can take you across the entire state to the Ohio river on mostly converted rail lines.

Cleveland has a world class orchestra! Overall it is a very underrated city. You should do a video on Toledo. I really like the Old Orchard and Ottawa Hills neighborhoods .

Great video. From Seattle myself, it was cool to see a fairly walkable neighborhood like Tremont. Ohio City retails district was also pretty fun.

While I’ll never live there again, it’s nothing like what it was growing up and has saw tremendous development. I’m about 15 years it’ll almost be unrecognizable. Great parks, entertainment and fun. So many things I didn’t get to visit but n my last trip.

Also what I like about it is if you ever get tired of it - you have like a dozen great cities in every direction to explore on weekends/road trips.

I could definitely see someone moving to Cleveland to have a relatively good quality of life in the sense of urbanist values while also trying to keep your bank account as full as possible. One might say, “Pittsburgh and Buffalo are both better on paper and are also affordable” , but Cleveland still has half the median home price that those cities have. Even if it were just a little more expensive, it wouldn’t be anything special, but it just seems to be extremely affordable

Yeah the affordability is the main draw for sure. I think you can find pockets in these neighborhoods or maybe a couple others and live quite well. Buffalo is a perfect comparison.

I see why people still love Cleveland despite the crime, you get some of what you want from Chicago and NYC but for much cheaper, amazing food and entertainment. The architecture is amazing, id try the city out if it wasnt on the great lakes

I went there a few months ago but I didn't find it very walkable. I would've probably chosen Cincinnati as a walkable Ohio city.

Yeah that’s why I emphasize the walkable neighborhoods because the entire city as a whole most definitely is not. I’ve been researching cincy!

@@cities4pplUnfortunately in 2020 it voted to the right of both Florida and Texas. The politicians aren’t in a race to spread the most insane policies possible to get rid of Democrats, but Ohio is solidly conservative after decades of being a swing state

Cleveland metro area typically votes Blue, Hopefully the rest of Ohio will revert back to being a purple swing state.

It's difficult due to constant gerrymandering that divides up the urban centers making them have less of a voice in the state legislature. This means urban transit funding from the state is pretty lacking. Additionally, you will have general issues of labor rights, lgbtq+ rights, and minority rights popping up in the state from time to time but as has been shown with the ballot initiatives in the last election (marijuana and abortion access) Ohioans can be relatively progressive on certain topics. One other thing that is a very recent development is the Haslam's interest in moving the stadium for the Cleveland Browns. If you are interested/have moved to Cleveland it's important to make you voice heard at the city council.
