Afrezza insulin is not for you. Metformin drug which you use allows your body to use the insulin your pancreas already produces. Type 2 diabetes prevents the body from using naturally made insulin correctly. Metformin helps to fix this. Metformin also reduces the body's ability to absorb sugars in the stomach and intestines. This is a weight loss benefit of Metformin. And it helps diabetes some by allowing you to eat more but not have it increase blood sugars. You could get this benefit from Metformin by just eating less. But Afrezza inhaled insulin is a bolus insulin that quickly takes glucose from the blood sugar and transports it into the cells. Afrezza and Metformin are not interchangeable.

Afrezza is just a different delivery method for insulin. The insulin is the same and does the same thing inside your body. Takes glucose from the blood stream and transports it into the cells. Afrezza just makes the insulin inhalable in your lungs. There are many tiny blood vessels inside the lungs that absorb oxygen when you breathe. They can also absorb Afrezza directly into the blood stream. And start working in minutes. You can take drugs by inhaling, swallowing, or injecting.

Similar retail cost to any other insulin. With my insurance, I only pay $15 per month. It cost me more to purchase the pen needles for my daily injection.

You must have a more comprehensive insurance plan then. They wouldn't mention the price being high if a person with an average policy only had to pay $15.00 a month.

It is more expensive than liquid insulin. But some insurance companies will cover it. Every insurance company has a different list of drugs it covers or does not cover. Maybe based on whether the drug maker gives them a kickback. But the main reason Afrezza is not used by many is because it is new and it only covers half the diabetic needs of insulin. The new aspect is doctors have been using liquid insulin for decades. So Afrezza is new and different. The half what a diabetic needs is because a diabetic needs two insulins. A bolus insulin for meals and lowering high blood sugar. And a basal insulin for long term round the clock sugar control. When on syringe injections, the way it always was done, a diabetic took bolus shots before every meal of fast acting insulin (Apidra, Humalog, Novolog). And once or twice a day injections of basal insulin (Levemir, Lantus, Tresiba) that was a constant strength all day long. Two different insulins needed. With Afrezza you would still have to take injections of the basal insulin. And use Afrezza for meal boluses. And for all the diabetics using pumps, Afrezza would not work. Pumps allow better, tighter control of blood sugars for the basal part of insulin than injections of basal insulin can. Pumps allow you to vary the basal insulin every few minutes all day long. Cannot do that with injected basal insulin like Levemir, Lantus, Tresiba. Personally, I see Afrezza as a great supplement, extra for diabetics with pumps. Get pretty good round the clock with the pump and its fast acting insulin. Then use Afrezza when blood sugar spikes up too high to bring it down very quickly. Best of both worlds. But I'm not sure any insurance company is going to pay for that many different insulins plus pump and its supplies.
