The inhalable insulin known as Afrezza begins affecting blood glucose remarkably faster than injected insulin, in just roughly 2 minutes. Ginger Vieira tells us her experience using Afrezza for three years, how she implements it into her treatment and how it works.

Love the video, and great job explaining Afrezza Ginger. The only issue I had was looking over the hosts shoulder. I wanted to scream at him, hit an 8 of Afrezza and knock down that BG number!

I've been tempted to try this for a while however, my biggest concern is the food or meal factor. Never mind just carb counting, every person will have their own body reaction to any ingredient and trying to determine how long that reaction is going to be or how long whatever ingredient is going to "hang around" and have an impact can be challenging (like dinner that actually impacts hours later even though it was eaten at like dinner time - this happens to me with "keto" bread.). Initially, the impact is minimal which may work for the Afrezza but what happens after? I assume I would need another dose or like your guest mentioned still sometimes using something like Novolog. Tempting to try, inhaling is definitely a new method and would be handy (especially for things like slightly sweet alcohol that impacts fast but doesn't stay long) but...not sure. So glad to see and hear from someone actually using it.

Hi Justin, Even though I didn't have time to listen to the whole article, I know well what is being talked about. I had considered using Afrezza but unfortunately it is not currently available for the health service in my country. Combined with a latest generation delaying insulin it could avoid both the patch pump and carrying the smartphone 24/24 hours. It would be enough just to have an Eversense 385 days implant and... maybe it would make life easier. Keep writing good articles on the topic Thank you Luigi

So Afrezza doesn't need to be refrigerated like insulin? (less sensitive to hot/cold????)

I have been a T1D for over 40 years. I have Kaiser California Permanente healthcare. Afrezza sounds like an absolute godsend to me! but Kaiser says that they do not prescribe Afrezza. I am determined to use it! and I don't mind paying for it out of pocket, if I have no other choice. *How would I go about getting it?*
@diabe_tech
@diabe_tech 5 ай бұрын
Hmmm im not sure about that - see if GoodRX has a coupon? Also, maybe get a prior authorization in collaboration with your doctor? Is that even a thing with Kaiser?

If you can afford the $1400 per month for self-pay, you can probably afford a new physician to prescribe it (like $180).

Do we know if the new inhaled insulin has Lungs side effects? The first time my doctor recommended inhale insulin, long time ago, by the time I was going to get it, it got removed from the market because it was creating problems between the powder and your lungs.

Ginger did mention that the early on inhaled insulin was taken off the market. In her experience, her lung function has not been diminish. Believe she said when she started she ran 2 miles/day. Currently running 3 miles/day.

I am a T1 going on 45years and am currently using the Tandem T-Slim. I had my Dr rx Afrezza because I wanted to trying using the inhale for mealtime and pump for basil...but my stupid insurance company (Cigna) declined it with some BS about having to prove that bolusing with pump doesnt work for me.
@marionkirkham8576

Good to know. I have been T1D for 53 years and am also on the TSlim. I am in Canada, so I am curious as to whether i will run into the same issue. I can see the Afrezza would deal with several frustrating issues with the pump.
@rafaelsmith681
@rafaelsmith681 5 ай бұрын
@@marionkirkham8576 That is my hope...to be able to combine pump(basil) and afrezza(bolus/correction). Over the past few year I have noticed boluses and corrections taking longer ang longer to "take effect". Getting to the point where I have to pre-bolus 40+ before meal which is just not really reasonable. Have appt with Endo next week and going to discuss what we can do to get insurance on board. I also tend to get caught in rage bolusing trying to correct highs. :(

Insurance company does not want to pay for two different drugs for the same disease. You are prescribed for a fast acting insulin for the pump. And it covers bolus and basal due to how the pump operates. So insurance does not want to pay for a second insulin for bolus. You are asking for two prescriptions for the same disease. Fast acting liquid insulin and inhaled insulin. Both for diabetes. Now with injections where you use a bolus and a basal insulin, the insurance company knows they are two different drugs for the same disease. But both insulins perform different functions.
@rafaelsmith681
@rafaelsmith681 5 ай бұрын
I understand that.. But the reason my Dr wants me to try Afrezza for bolus/correction is because over the years my sensitivity has gotten to the point where bolus/corrections take much longer to "take effect"...I am at the point of having to pre-bolus 40min prior to eating which is just silly. I also have to deliver larger boluses than in the past for the same BG/carb which is causing pain at the infusion site. @@russellseaton2014

If you forget your inhaler you can slide the cartridge into the open position and inhale it straight from the cartridge. Awkward but doable. Not medical advice. Ha!
