Climate change and Urbanization are together increasing the water scarcity where the water demand exceeds availability for the world's cities. Nairobi’s water demand currently stands at 810 million litres per day against a supply of 550 million litres per day with a deficit of 260 million litres. The impact of climate change is now becoming a reality to the residents of Nairobi.
The East Africa’s fast expanding City, which is the international, regional, administrative and economic hub for Kenya, once referred to as the ‘Green City under the sun’, has slowly been losing the vegetation title. The green cover has shrunk to pave way for the urban developments and the settlement pressure from ever-growing population. The increased demand for water has also increased the water stress in the Central Kenya’s mountain ecosystem where expansion for the additional collector tunnels are being developed to satisfy the huge demand.
According Nairobi Water and Sewerage company, the chronic water shortage in the city including its surrounding area because the proposed additional water source, the Northern Collector Scheme, was not implemented as proposed in 1998.
With the impact of climate change, increased population, water supply deficit, and water demand projections, what does the future have for the urban dwellers?

The lack of tree cover is not simply because of the demand for housing. It is due to the lack of planning, which has led to destruction of the forest cover to allow housing. There are consequences. Those consequences can be reversed with hard work and obeying the law of holes: if you want to get out of a hole, stop digging. Those destroying the forest are trampling on the rights of everyone to safe, clean drinking water.

The issue is not water. Its poor planning . There's an enormous idle population in Nairobi....created by politicians. Devolution means decentralization. People who have no employment are supposed to go back to counties and get engaged in county activities not to come to Nairobi to strain resources. But politicians want these people to idle in Nairobi to vote for them. Then most Kenyans just want to be seen to be living in Nairobi instead of living in the villages. That's why there's high prostitution and crime in Nairobi. Prostitution has contributed to high population as women get children with men for survival . Theres no order in this country. These informal settlements should not be there in the first place. They are the cause of Nairobi problems. Residents guide sewage into water sources. But politicians keep these people there for votes. Policy is required to curb influx of unemployed to urban centres. Let them remain in the village and farm for food security. They will live better lives in the village than they do in Nairobi. Counties are now mini countries. Each county should be responsible for it's population and only have civil servants and companies that generate significant revenues be in Nairobi. Some industries should be moved to counties. This will reduce crime, prostitution which is responsible for adolescence deliquency and straining of resources in the city.

I'm curious...is climate change the only reason? I highly, doubt it. What are the other reasons for water shortage. I believe people are invested in creating demand to sell water.
