Whitney Huell is the only African-American ballerina in the Kansas City Ballet. She started dancing at five years old, which means she's performed in The Nutcracker, "Oh, for a while. Yes, a long while," she said.

I am a teacher and would love to show her complete performance for my students. Does anyone know where I can find that?

Is this really news WORTHY? The ballet place should be slapped for having never let a woman of poc decent be a main role in their play so long that its NEWS WORTHY!! It makes no sense to in 2018 be celebrating the FIRST black American in anything. Why did it take so long? Why is no one asking this?

Satans Lair no their was an attraction they just couldn’t. I’m a ballet dancer and my teacher forces us to learn the history of everything. Many black dancers weren’t allowed in the academy it is actually a recent thing that they are now allowing black woman to dance in schools. Michaela deprince was told she could not dance in many studios because she was black and woman would just get fat so they wouldn’t work on her like the other girls. Of course she keep pushing until someone would except her but for most girls they just gave up because they believed the ballet “masters” when they said things like that. Also there are many black dancers and their has always been company’s just wouldn’t let them in that’s how ballet black is possible it is also how Alvin alley created his company many of the original alley dancer we’re classically trained ballet dancers but because the white company wouldn’t let them in alley created his own company. I don’t who told you that black people weren’t interested in ballet because they were white companies just wouldn’t let them in so we never saw them .

Satans Lair not only was this completing ignorant but downright disrespectful. It’s because people like you have pushed down the idea of being super petite and thin. Grow the hell up.

@Cancer Survivor there are PLENTY of petite black women so stop. I wanted to do ballet as a girl (I’m black, thin, long legs, and flexible) but the nearest studio was 45mins away in the city over. More black girls and boys aren’t as attracted to it Bc there likely isn’t a space for them to explore the craft. In predominately black communities it is rare to find a legit dance studio, let alone on that specializes in classical ballet. Also those classes, competitions, clothes, traveling, ect, are very expensive which also makes it barrier. And as the other person said black people have been purposely pushed out of exclusive places and now that people are calling them out for the bs everyone wants diversity.

So? She was selected as the lead because she fits the role perfectly and is a great dancer. Why in 2018 we’re still on “first African American”. This isn’t newsworthy.

It wouldn't be newsworthy if there were more black leads throughout the years of this company's existence. Since that has never happened, is newsworthy.

Bc why is it 2018 in the 50+ years of existence they FINALLY have a non white lead. That is huge for POC and very much news worthy. Assuming your white you never had to consider race when looking at these things Bc the person is usually white but for poc it is exciting to see people who look like you achieve things they were previously excluded from.
