By now you’ve heard Misty Copeland’s story - she smashed through countless barriers to redefine how the ballet world views women of color. In the latest episode of Hannahgram, Hannah Bronfman catches up with Alison Stroming, a ballerina with The Dance Theater Of Harlem, to learn what the next chapter in the black ballerina narrative looks like. Spoiler alert: she’s seriously breathtaking.

Since many of you do not know history, or even recent history, let me try to explain. For many years, many women who auditioned for ballet companies or tried to go to ballet schools or competitions were denied. Not because they were bad but just because they were Black. Those of us who understand this are also UNDERSTANDABLY PROUD that someone managed to get over this barrier. Those of you who live in the fantasy world where everyone supposedly loves our people, or will at least respect us and give us the benefit of the doubt, as all humans deserve, can continue to complain while the rest of us remain proud of the accomplishments of others, and steadfast in achieving our own goals.

Who cares what color she is! She is beautiful! I would love to have learned ballet but we barely had food on the table when I was little so it was not an option. Good for her that she is dancing and doing so amazingly well. ALL girls that do ballet are amazing, regardless or color or nationality. Beautiful!

@Jane Madison I do agree that having to qualify Alison as black is discouraging. However, it is necessary given the reality of the world that we live in. It is true that any aspiring dancer faces many obstacles when trying to become a professional. They have to face the reality of whether or not they are talented enough, flexible enough, musical enough. There are injuries, mental and emotional stress and others. However, to be a dancer who fills in all the "right" boxes but is denied work because of an aspect of themselves that they cannot change is a problem of perspective that can be modified if we work to do so. By acknowledging that Alison is a black ballerina, we draw attention to the dynamics of the ballet world. It is still true that black women face, at the very least, discouragement when it comes to joining the world of classical dance. If we removed the qualifier, "black", then the importance of Alison's progress and people like her might go unnoticed. Although it might seem divisive at first, the objective of pointing out her skin color is to eventually eliminate unnecessary barriers.

KIMURA: IF you don't like it, don't worry about it. I wonder why it never occurs to people like you that we are not the only people who have affinity for those of us who succeed? I have met literally almost every kind of person in the world. And people are proud of people like them. I know many White people who were Southern and poor and were proud of President Clinton when he was inaugurated. I know Greeks who still worship Maria Callas as the best soprano. I know Jews who specially adore Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Italians who think Frank Sinatra is best. I could go on and on about this but BLACK PEOPLE are not the only people who do this.

Nikita Abuya women are not crayons they just women, this color thing is ridiculous. for goodness sakes black ple only have brown and black colors on them and whites have red, blue etc if anyone is a woman of color it's a white person. it's just ridiculous. The woman obviously didn't have a hard time getting a job coz she's not 100% white she just doesn't see as many none whites in her profession. The profession just wants skinny girls with tiny boobs.

@@kitxart If mixed people are so called 'black' then it would mean that all 'black' men worldwide could 'PROCREATE' with white women and claim to be 'PRESERVING' the black race. And their 'BIRACIAL' kids could do the same, and so could their 'QUADROON' grand kids and 'OCTOROON' great grand kids. It makes no 'BIOLOGICAL' sense.
