I'm a high school printmaking teacher with no budget, and using this I can make a plate for every student at home and bring it in. Then I can save my budget for ink.

That’s great! I’m really glad it was useful and helpful. I still use that gelli plate after all this time. I melt and reset again from time to time, at no extra cost apart from that preservative that is actually very cheap. 😊❤️

Ive been remelting plates for classes for the past 6 years. If you put a splash of Isopropyl alcohol in the melted mix it will prevent mould and burst any bubbles. Using a microwave makes it a lot easier too.

Love love love your channel!! I‘ve also experimented with making my own gel plates with varying results. My first ones without any preservative got moldy. For my second try I used a recipe with alcohol, which solved the problem with mold, but with time they did shrink and got much more condensed and the paint dried on them very quickly. I‘m looking forward to giving your method a try. The preservative was very hard to find here in Austria but found a source in Germany and just received it, so now I‘m ready to sieze the day!! 😊

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me! I can't believe my gel plate is still ok to use after more than a year. I occasionally melt it and reset when it shrinks too much or gets scratched. I keep adding the preservative every time because it really makes a difference. Glad you found some. It's available here in all supermarkets. It's quite common ingredient for pickled vegetables 😊

You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed that! I prefer to use thinner papers with gel plates. The one I like using most is thin deli paper. Sometimes it’s called butcher paper or tissue paper. It’s a bit glossy on one side. I like to use non glossy side on gelli. Thanks so much for watching! Greetings from Sarajevo 😊

I think your idea is brilliant ❤ Loved that You can create whatever you want with that homemade gelli plate. I didn't even know it exists and that could be bought, not even made and reused!!! Amazing!. I loved the printings, they show nice and perfect. What type of paper do you use, because it seemed to be a larger one, not common printing paper. Tysm, Saacibo, I really enjoyed your video!!! ❤❤❤

You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I caught the gelli printing bug 2 years ago and I'm still hooked 🤣. The paper that I used was tissue or deli paper, butcher paper, I'm not sure what it's called in different countries. It comes as a very large sheet, A1 I think and I used it to protect my desk from paint. This one I cut up in small sections to use on gelli plate. 😊❤️

I kept mine in the tray, covered with some cardboard to keep the dust away. In warmer months I would leave it in the fridge and in winter months it was in my studio, in the drawer, away from sunlight. 😊

Could you perhaps make up the lost volume with additional gelatine/glycerine mixture rather than just plain water? I’m thinking that it might not shrink down quite as much over time, maybe …
@Saacibo

I suppose you could. I’ve been adding just water it worked ok for me. I checked the other day and my gel plate didn’t evaporate at all during winter months. 😊

Hello, I didn’t realize you could make your own Gel plate. That is super cool. I was toying with the idea of getting one. I will someday as I have enough already, projects and stuff. But as artists we can never have enough art supplies, right? Your numbers and letter prints are so so good. Will you do a digital down load for that one? I would buy them! Thanks for sharing! That was so cool❤😊

Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks so much for watching😊❤️ I couldn't get a gel plate from the shops locally, so I started experimenting trying to make my own. I watched a few videos on KZfaq and tried a few different recipes. The first one I made wasn't really good, it became moldy in only 2 months. Since then, I changed the recipe until I was happy with the result. I'm thrilled that this one is still good after 10 months 😊. I'm not sure if I can make a digital from these prints because of the stencils I used. Copyright issues 😫 I better check first 😊

Hi, I made a gelli plate and after one use it kinda melted. So I melted it, strained it added more gelatine and then actually got about 6 prints out of it. When I started using it, it was still cool from the fridge. Then it broke down again. Layers of it were coming off with the paper......it's about 82 degrees in my art room, warm but I didn't think hot. If there's help out there, I'd sure like to save it. Thanks so much!
@Saacibo
@Saacibo 13 күн бұрын
Oh, sorry you had trouble with it. Sometimes it’s the gelatin. Not all kinds are the same. I used beef gelatin. It seems to me your gelli plate needs more of it. Keep adding until it’s firm enough. Also, make sure you don’t overheat when melting because it would make the gelatin useless 😊

Hi, have you tried storing the plate with some damp kitchen towel on top and then some cling wrap (saran wrap). Hopefully then the plate don't shrink so much if at all.
@Saacibo
@Saacibo 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the advice! When I made it the first time, I kept it in a airtight plastic container/ folio and it didn't shrink but it got moldy very quickly because the moisture that evaporated couldn't escape. Although, I didn't use the food preservative that time. I like the idea of using a damp cloth. I will try that! Thank you😊❤️

The first one I made, before this one, I had to throw away because it got moldy. Couldn’t save it I’m afraid. The preservative I’ve added to this one is really working, it’s still mold free. 😊

I made mine with alcohol about 4 years ago. I have never had a mold problem. I did tear it one time. I melted it down again and remolded it in my large glass baking dish. I am not a perfectionist, so losing a 1/4 inch would not bother me. I keep it on a piece of plexiglass glass and I cover it with plastic wrap. I used my glass baking dish because glass is not porous so would not allow the contents I 😢pour into it to be absorbed into itself Hope this is useful Info to someone .

Thank you so much for sharing this information. It’s certainly useful. When I tried with alcohol I wasn’t adding the preservative, perhaps that is why mine turned moldy quickly. ❤️😊

Hi. I made this gelli plate but can't make it work. The acrylic dries too fast, almost immediate, and sticks back to the brayer. I tried retarding agent so the acrylic doesn't dry too fast but didn't work. Has this ever happened to you? Im out of ideas. Thanks!!!
@Saacibo
@Saacibo 5 ай бұрын
Hi! I usually take 1-2 starter prints to “warm” up the gel plate, because they tend to dry a bit when not in use. I also use wet wipes to clean before use and after use. If the acrylic paint is too dry maybe you could add some water to it. Some paints just won’t work, especially the chalky ones. I tried using some artist grade quality, thick acrylics once and that didn’t work. The runnier the better in my opinion
