Since my buddy Mike was kind enough to point out I didn't talk about the seat mod I had done I'll put it here and pin it. I had the stock seat dished out and a gel pad installed. It is nice because it lowers the seat a good inch! It also makes the stock seat comfortable enough finally for all day trips. I had a Sargent installed before this mod. Good seat, but still not quite where I wanted to be.

totally agree on preferring the quick shifter down rather than up. Shifting up from 3rd with some speed on it feels pretty good.

Pat, great video. One of the ‘lessons learned’ homemade mods that I applied to my GSA from my K1600 was to insert some window screen (the real stuff, not the rolled up flimsy kind) between the plastic BMW radiator covers and the radiator. For the GSA I measured and cut about a 5.5” x 7.5” sheet I think. Just loosen a couple of the bottom screws on the rad cover on each side and slide in the screen behind the cover. A 5 minute job. On my K1600 the OEM plastic rad cover was insufficient in protecting the rad from penetrating debris, bugs and tar from chip & seal pavement. Over a hot summer they all combined into a goo that hardened on the fins once they got past the the holes of the OEM guard. Over time...about 15,000 miles...the bottom third of the rad clogged up and the cooling system had to work that much harder, to the point of occasionally overheating. This was a tip from my K1600 forum. Cleaned the radiator, applied the window screen, and doesn’t seem to affect air flow or cooling system/fan temperature engagement. So far the window screen has done a great job of adding a ‘mesh’ layer of protection that I can easily replace any time I clean the rad. Granted, the GSA rad position is much higher up under the fairing than the K1600 and therefore not as exposed, but I thought it worthwhile to apply to my GSA as well. I was surprised at how much debris the mesh captured and kept off the fins on my GSA during a recent 4 day camping trip. You could try it and see if it works for you. Also, could you post a link to your specific highway peg setup? I have the same issue. Thanks.

Nice video. Nice bike and it looks great for 3 drops - I am getting a 1250GS this month to replace a second bike and I'm glad to hear you say you would like to have that and a touring bike. I have a K1600GTL for road touring (has the same size tank as the GSA) and I was worried the GS would almost be too good. Anyway keep riding!

Just watched your 11K miles review as I also have the same 2019 GSA HP...my turn signals do auto cancel at either street or highway speeds so that works for me and yes I too miss my Harley Road King which I sold for the GSA, hands down, the GSA rides and corners better than the Harley---thanks for sharing

Pat, Nice video. I too believe the windshield knob is basackward! I do not seem to notice the clutch issue - my Honda CRF450L is much worse. Also, thanks for the AEP tip (From FB). I have a new R1250GS, and the clutch is one of my favorite things on the bike. The Ducati Monster 1200 that I traded in had a much heavier pull and more abrupt take-up. I think I could get the GS moving without giving it any gas. Either there are production variations in the bikes, or you came from a. bike with an awesome clutch.

It does cancel signal automatically after if you are riding over 60mph

Hi Pat, have the exact same one, august 2019 is the purchase date. 15k miles on it. Came with Anarkees but changed to trailmaxs and made a huge difference. NAV went out, Garmin replaced with a brand new one. Other than that it has been flawless. In regards to the clutch have not seen the same issues. The biggest gripe is the Bluetooth which consistently on certain occasions drops off. Other than that I have enjoyed it. Oh also have the lone rider headlight guard, Makes it look mean and cool. I do commute on it a fair bit so miles are piling up.

Me too, I want a second Vtwin motor to compliment my R1250 GSA...looking at the new Indian Challenger as I heard it runs like a "scalded cat" just like the GSA...lol

Hey Pat, Niced video. I agree with some of your complaints too. I replaced my handguards immediately with BarkBusters. One tip for cancelling cruise is to add some positive power to gain a little speed and then lightly pull on the clutch. It seems to be more passive then using the gas. My .02 cents. The BMW seats always suck too.

Hi pat re the indicators they are self canceling. After approx 600 meters they will cancel. It’s set base on autobahn speed when changing lanes.good video

Short clutch movement is good for feathering in stop and go traffic.

Try a quick push on your indicator, you should get a 3 or 4 flash to overtake. Push and hold leaves it on for turning then it self cancels once the lean changes (after you turn). That’s how they work here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

motor was ticking bad when he pulled up to show the highway pegs. i have the same bike mine DOES NOT make that loud of a clicking noise. also, little clutch lever movement from fully engaged to disengaged is a good thing. it allows the clutch to stay cooler as you pull the lever even further

I wonder if Pat would buy another BMW GSA? Or maybe consider the new Triumph Tiger 1200 after a test ride? Or go back to a full dress Touring bike like the new generation DCT or manual Gold Wing? The Key ignitions do have their own nigglies and short comings. Highway pegs are needed on all long haul tourers. I can’t think of any bike that wouldn’t. In any event, anytime you out on two wheels is a good time.

It's funny but the stuff that you say you don't like about the bike I actually like. The short/light clutch engagement is like a dirt bike, and the other stuff is just fine. I don't use the speed shifter between 2d and 3d, and it is plenty fast shifting, it's amazing when getting on the freeway, and you're going 80 pretty quick. I do want to get some highway pegs though, and I guess I have to say I am not a big fan of the hard side bags for the same reason you mention; they get crushed when impacted.

Agree about the windshield adjustment and especially Why on the right side ?? It would be so much better on the left, so that you don't have to reach all the way across the bike to adjust it!! Otherwise love the bike!

What was your touring bike. I’m deciding between this & the Hayabusa for touring. I had a Gs 1200 & presently ride a Suzuki GSX-S 1000. Please advise

Your quickshifter should be glass-smooth up and down at any speed. It probably was when brand new. Several things can happen... there was a software problem in the 2019's (I have the identical bike to yours) and a reload of the code solved a harsh quickshift back to like new. Later, at about 15,000 miles, quickshift was again a problem, with some false neutrals and general harshness. My Motorrad tech found that the microswitch that reports clutch action had failed, and when replaced under warranty, I was treated to like-new glass-smooth, any revs, any gears, up and down, hard power or almost no power quickshift action. Check it out with your tech - it should be smooth, and it can be.

I find if you roll off the throttle slightly on the upshifts when you are not pushing on, I get really smooth changes and when you are pushing on the quickshifter works in the usual way,just click up the gears,works for me👍

My 2021 GSA has cancelation turn signals..I swap my levers for Vario... a much better feel...upshift with a little pressure on the shifter...like butter. Pivot Pegz and one-inch risers on the handlebars...I am 6 ft . Steering stop will save you $... loose the top box and the big will handle better.I have over 90,000 Miles on GSA's...an evolution for sure...a few cons.Best improvement is an offroad riding course ...recommend Rawhyde Adventures...that's when you learn how to come to grips with the weight.

Anybody with a shiftcam GS(A) find the mechanical engine noise (seems from the heads) annoying? Sounds a bit like a bucket of chattering bolts above 3k rpm...?

Two part question. What touring bike did you have? What touring bike would you most like to have. I have a ‘22 R1250GS Rallye Edition. Love it, but sometimes not. After riding super bikes for 40 years, the height has been a big adjustment.

I have an Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 Factory with a quickshifter I love very much. Yesterday I tried a demo BMW GSA 2022 model. I liked the clutch a lot. Did not experience any weirdness. It felt normal IMO. Actually I liked it a lot. It felt very good since it is hydraulic. However I did not like the quickshifter at all. It was not good in any way compared to the Tuono. The precision when gearing however is another level. Short and very precise. With a good quickshifter and a little more horsepower I think the GS/GSA 1250 could be very good. I have not tried the KTM adventure yet but I think the transition from Tuono to KTM Adventure would suit me better than a GS/GSA. I wish the GS was a bit better in the mentioned areas.

My 2019 R1250GSA ...DOES have auto cancel on the directions. You're missing something.. You do have some distance/speed requirements, but they do cancel...

Interesting review Pat. I am currently looking at an r1250gs low version. I have a harley ultra limited tour bike, wife doesnt ride much anymore. I am 61 and it is just too heavy to manuevur out of garage "hip surgery and all". Also bought a klr 650 for offroading, and it is so light and so much fun. harley gets no love anymore. Killed me when you said you would have a touring and a gs. I am looking for the retirement bike that will take me everywhere. Do you still feel you need a touring bike vs this being your one and only. I know it is all subjective.....you can dm me your private thoughts.....thanks Dan

Personally I think the smoothest way to turn off cruise control is the roll the throttle all the way off and it magically turns off. Some people don’t know you can do that.

Love my 2020 GSA, some of the gripes you have a fully agree with. On the turn signal, it will auto cancel, just takes a bit. I think my biggest thing is that, at 6"2'. I get a lt of buffiting. Figure I will fix that with a new screen down the line. Great vid and thanks for posting it!

You’d get even more out of that tank if you’d shift into 6th. You’re running 5th on flat ground at 60 mph? Why? It’ll pull it easily without lugging.
