Iv'e completed 9 Ironbutts on scooters of 350cc or under. Some Italian and some Taiwanese and one 1200 mile ride from Calais to Avus in Berlin and back in 21 and 3/4 hours. The most I've ridden was 2164 miles in 54 hours from Calais to Valencia and back with 4 hours sleep but that wasn't a very good idea. One more ride to do in April this year :-)

...my record was 1382 miles in 21.5 hrs on a 1994 R1100 RS ( summer of 1994) . The first two days was constant rain as a front was stalled along the east coast. My wet was wet! LOL For the week it was ~ 4,200 miles in 4.5 days. GOOD TIMES AND I MISS THEM! I did not know about Iron Butt in those days.

I haven't done 1610km yet, but in 2012,I rode from Cape Town To Edenvale and back. I left CT on Friday and came back on Monday, 1450km one way. I ride a GTR1400, and stopped 7 times for fuel on my way there and 5 times on my way back. An amazing experience. Can't remember the time but less than 24 hours.🙂 In December 2015, my wife and I and my brother and his wife took a camping trip around SA on 2 GTR's. We did over 6000km in 18 days. The route was Cape Town, Springbok , Thabazimbie, Mussina, Magoebas Kloof, Sabie, Pongola,Port Edward, Port St Johns, Hole in the wall, East London, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Strand. One of the best holidays of my life.

Good effort on a modern bike. In July 1986, my (then girlfriend, later wife Louise) left Antibes on the French Riviera to come back home to Worcestershire, on my Suzuki GSX1100 ESD, loaded with tankbag, throwover panniers and a rack loaded high with camping gear(couldn't afford hotels in those days). We took the Route Napoleon through Gap and on to Grenoble(that part took 6 hours). It was then a long night-time blast, back up a then incomplete Autoroute network, around Paris and up to Calais. Through the night we were cruising mile after mile at over 100mph and stopping every 1hr 20mins for fuel, when Lou had to wake up. We waited 2 hours for the Hovercraft(remember them) to arrive, because of fog in the English Channel. Then the 230 mile ride back home from Dover. 952 miles and exactly 24 hours since we left Antibes. Did I ever want to do it again? Absolutely no way, but doing it once was more than enough.

You need to live in Australia! My trips usually have a first day of 1300 to 1500 Km, and following days min 800, depending upon the temperature, anything over 38C limits tolerance to 800K. Oddly enough the heat is worse in the Southern areas, humidity rules. BMW's have the legs out here, R1200 does 600KM on 98 Premium fuel, as it sits on cruise mostly.

Re seats: When was the last time you had to get out of a car because the seat was too hard? Why can't bike manufacturers make a bike seat that lasts a good chunk of the day.
@sv650nyc7
@sv650nyc7 2 жыл бұрын
They can and do if it's a dedicated touring bike. If it's a sportier bike you need it a bit harder in order to feel feedback from the road and tires. Also a wide comfort seat usually looks ugly and would destroy the lines of the bike. Finally, a car seat has about 15cm of padding material. You do that on a bike and you either have to lower the entire bike to still be able to reach the ground with your feet or you force everyone to ride cruiser style bikes.

I completed an Iron Butt Saddle sore 1000, in just under 22 hours. I road a 2012 Triumph Tiger 1050 SE. I'm glad I did it, but really all you do is ride to beat the clock and that's not really the type of riding I enjoy. The GS is (IMO) a good choice for the Iron Butt.

Why does that GSA have a standard GS windscreen? The GSA should have a larger, wider, touring screen which would go a long way to improving the wind buffeting.

That's interesting as I'm going to attempt my next one on a 20 year old BMW R 1100 RT. Is there anything that I should know such as what kind of range per tank you were getting ? Not that part of the country. Johannesburg to Upington is the straightest tar road you can ride in SA. There are two straights between Vryburg and Kurunan each over 50km's long with only a kink in a small town between them. For bikers heaven, you must go to the eastern and southern side of SA.
