I just bought the same machine 3 weeks ago based on Justin's recommendation. Been practicing every night. I'm fortunate to work at a precision metal fabricating shop so I have access to unlimited metal and experienced welders. Your videos are great to see what a beginner goes thru rather than someone with years of experience. To bad you're not local. I would be able to help you with some metal. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Im with you, learning also. Outside observation, i have seen, mostly Jodi from welding tips and tricks, does the (lift) as the puddle increases when adding filler. Maybe your style, maybe a bad habit developing, but you seem to dip into the puddle, when adding your filler. Just something I noted on your arc shots/torch movement along a weld. 3 months later and a vast improvement especially in the weld width and heat input (travel speed). I have to see if theres a part 3 now ;)

Good observation! It's a bad habit and not intentional. I'm still working on trying to keep the same distance from the tungsten to the work piece. I haven't made a part 3 video yet but I probably should. :) Happy Welding!

I just watched your video from a few months ago and now this one... awesome improvement! Can see (and hear) it not just in the end result but as you're welding as well. The arc sounds different with you controlling it more with the pedal and your movements are a lot more controlled. Maybe everyone can agree to call it a BOC (butted-outside corner) joint haha! Excited to get my machine and start learning too. Keep up the good work with the videos!

Let me give you some context here- I can weld circles around most people with a MIG (I know, most people can pick up a MIG and stick metal together with it, but it's quite a bit harder to really control what is happening and be able to make it work in most situations), and I've owned a TIG for a few years but haven't been able to just sit and practice regularly. I'll pick up the TIG and use it when it's the only way, and occasionally "I'll TIG this because I need practice, I need to get better," but often will finish the job with MIG because I can make a more even "stack of dimes" with it in a fraction of the time. You've done in 3 months what I haven't done in years, and honestly, if I had 2/3 of the progress that you've had with TIG I would use it a lot more. On that note, out to the garage... I tacked a project together with the TIG earlier and couldn't figure out how to run any kind of decent bead on it and decided that I'll leave it and come back, well I've pretty much decided that I'm going to MIG it. Oh well... 🙁🙃

Thanks for the reply Mark, I appreciate your input. TIG is definitely a challenge. It requires a lot of practice to learn how to control the heat and read the puddle. (at least that's been my experience so far) I practice quite a bit and I learn something new every time I practice with the TIG machine. Have fun with your welding and keep on practicing. :)

You should turn the welder so you can see the display during recording. Then you can see what your amperage is doing during welding. You have definitely improved a ton and it's looking great, good job. I had mentioned on a previous comment that I was looking into the same welder for Tig, I already have a Miller 211 for steel and aluminum mig. My outlook has changed for me though, I've been fighting cancer the last couple years and I've pretty much just been given a year left at best. I don't think I'm going to drop the money on this machine and I'm just going to play with the "toys" I have to kill the time I have left, for lack of a better phrase. I spend plenty of time between my lath, mill, welder, etc. Great job on your improvements, it's really coming along. Cheers

Looking really good. One thing I occasionally struggle with on aluminum is having the filler rod ball back away from the weld. For me it usually just comes down to having too much torch angle. I have to force myself to use closer to a 90 degree angle. Helps a lot. Do you have a steel supply shop local to you? Most of them will have a "drops" section that will often have cheap-ish pieces for practice or that might be just the thing you need to finish up a project. I've gotten lots of odds and ends and some pieces of stainless steel cheap from the drops at my local place. Just a thought.
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips on the filler rod positioning. I am always working on that for sure. Part of my filler rod problem in some of the videos is I'm coming from an angle trying not to hit my arc shot camera. LOL That's not the only issue though, I just need more practice, it's just easier if I'm not trying to film. Yes, I have a metal supply store, I haven't visited them yet but I have been thinking about doing that at some point. Thanks for the tips and bringing it to my attention.

I noticed you have a habit of raising the tungsten very slightly when you remove the filler rod and lower it when you want to insert it again. Not sure if this is a big deal but it will increase your arc length a bit.

I found you don't need as much tungsten stick out when welding aluminum. Also I always use 3/32" filler when welding a fillet weld on 1/8" aluminum. It will help keep the filler from melting to soon when feeding into the weld puddle.

@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 2 жыл бұрын
What I am finding is there is no substitution for practice. As you get better with practice you'll know exactly what cups, settings, techniques will work best for you. If a guy doesn't get too frustrated and quit, you'll eventually figure it out through practice. Happy welding to you! 👍

@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 I know that is true. I never had the burnouts with my Lincoln 175 but that was a couple of years ago. I just restarted with the Lincoln 185 transformer type and think I used a larger cup for fillets in the past, Oh well, retired with 2 tanks of argon so I shall experiment. I think too small a cup is too focused heat and makes it hard to see the arc. I shall carry on👀 . LOL

Seeing the puddle and what it's doing has been one of my main challenges while trying to learn to weld. Part of my issue has been my eyes. As I get older the eyes just aren't what they once were. It's a great machine in my opinion! I am using mine on a 30amp dryer circuit and I have had zero issues running it that way. My laundry room outlet shares a wall with my garage so I tapped into the dryer outlet circuit and installed a 30 amp outlet on the garage wall side of the shared wall. Really what I have is a single 30 amp dryer circuit with two outlets. One for the dryer and one for the welder. I just can't run both the dryer and welder at the same time or I might trip the breaker. No problems with any of that to date. I've been running it this way for about 4 months and no issues at all. The machine runs just fine on a 30 amp circuit. I haven't tried running it at 225 amps yet but I really don't need that much power for what I'm doing.

Hey wanted to make sure I got back to you on some info I got from the primeweld tech. Apparently you can get a lot of noise and or resistance if you leave the knobs turned in any position besides off/lowest setting. So even if you have it on 2T DC, turn all the knobs down on everything else, so pulse, up/down slope etc. turn them all down/off even though your not using them. Really noticed an instant improvement on the arc initiation and response, hope this helps you too.
