The butt weld is actually a butt weld if you set it up properly (face to edge). Its not a true outside corner joint. Its just located near the outside corner. Everyone gets confused on that one. Thanks for the shoutout 👊

One thing that's more difficult about edge welds and outside corners is maintaining good shielding coverage. I find a larger cup helps some. Aluminum takes a good bit of power to get started, but on small parts like that it's usually necessary to back off the pedal as you go. Heat will build up quickly on a part that small and aluminum can go to heck quickly as it heats up. Cool to see you tackle some aluminum with that welder. Aluminum can definitely be fun. Everything seems more difficult when trying to record and thinking about all that in addition to welding. Forgetting things like clamping the part and such happens to me when I'm trying to record too. With a little off-camera practice I bet you'll gain confidence quickly.

Thanks for the good info. You are right about trying to film and how it makes things quite a bit more difficult. I definitely need some off camera practice. I do like to capture this process on camera. It's going to be fun to go back and look at where I came from once I get some experience under my belt. It's just all part of the adventure. I'm really liking this welder, it's good to have a machine that has a lot of room to grow into.

have one of these machines showing up today - great seeing a total rookie (as I am) giving this all a shot. basic stuff I see the pro's doing is how patient they are, how meticulous they are with set up, cleaning etc. and how careful they are with position - hand rests etc. and that's before they've hit the pedal. I'll be in the same boat as you are here. best of luck and thanks for sharing your learning experience.

Congratulations, I think you are going to have a lot of fun learning as I am. I've been real happy with this machine so far and i think it's perfect for what I needed to learn on. I agree with you, preparation, positioning, and comfort are everything. I still struggle to get good positioning and comfort during the weld. Some of that has to do with trying to film and learn to weld at the same time. I do want to document my experience though and over time I'll improve little by little. Enjoy your new machine!

Greetings from across the pond! Great to see a rookie doing this, the pros make it look so easy when it's clearly not! Hoping to get myself an AC/DC TIG welder soon. Never done any welding before so I realise I'm throwing myself in at the deep end with TIG but I want to be able to do aluminium... and I like a challenge!

Thanks Adam! I think it's nice to see people learning as well as learn from those who are experienced. Anyone learning from scratch like I am will run into many issues and problems. That's part of the learning process. If you stick with it, you will overcome the issues and learn to weld! Just like every thing else in life, you'll get out of it what you put into it. Those two variables are always related in my opinion. Good luck with your welding adventures and thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!

@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 4 жыл бұрын
Jason with TFS called it a butt joint and he has way more experience than myself so that's why I called it a butt joint. I thought an outside corner joint was with the two pieces tacked so there was a little V to fill with the filler. This one was with the two faces smooth with no V. Honestly I don't know what the correct terminology should be. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!
@zod-engineering-welding
@zod-engineering-welding 4 жыл бұрын
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Physically, the orientation of the pieces is the same: they are 90° to each other. The difference in what the weld joint is actually called, is: ■ when you fill the inside of the V, that is a "fillet" or "inside corner". (Basically the opposite of what you did in the video) ■ When you weld the outer edge where they meet, that is an "outside corner". Perhaps they called it that by mistake, who knows . When tacking, try to make a big plump tack at the exact point you plan to end the bead. I call this "ending the bead in-advance". That way, when you get to it, you don't blow it out to kingdom come, as the extra metal mass will help absorb the heat that has inevitably built-up in the part.

Haha "Justin" from TFS Call this a butt joint because the edge of one plate is butt up flush to the edge of another... If the edges were set corner to corner that is usually when you would consider it a V groove or open corner joint. Sorry lol the guy that was getting technical with you obviously has the same amount of experience. And you will have that lol ...It is a corner Weld, but not and open corner joint. By the way I admire you doing this. I did the same thing before I sold my primeweld, made a video. That machine got me so comfortable with all types of tig welding I graduated to an Everlast then a Miller Dynasty 280 and started a side business. It all started with that primeweld :) good machine....OH BTW! go hit up a local welding supply or even online and get another pound of rods! Lol I started with harbor freight rods not thinking It would make any difference esthetically or in terms of how it flowed. I was very wrong lol Went to a couple of different welding suppliers and tried theirs, MUCH prettier results/more of a joy to use...only maybe 4 or 5 bucks difference. Never looked back, in fact I still have the same tube from HF sittin in the shop from few year ago lol

Just viewed your vid with welding aluminum and the first mistake I can see in addition to the ones you caught is how you hold the torch and holding the filler rod way too far back. I myself have never TIG welded (pot call kettle black). I just purchased a 225x last week and should be here in the next couple of days. In all fairness if that was your first time with a TIG you are going to make great welds in no time at all. Love the channel and is looking forward with your progress.

I do have same machine like you and same problem to have consistency in welds on aluminum. One weld looks great and suddenly another sucks . LOL And I too wish that scale around knobs is divided for more accurate settings , not big deal in DC , but kind the guess work on AC and Pulse .

Hey mate..first time watcher here..you are doing good with the start but i notice that you dont increas your pace as you procedd with the weld..time equals heat so as you weld you have to pick up speed to try and keep the heat at bay. But practice practice practice..and you need to learn a bit of foot control and back off as the heat builds up..otherwise your doing awsome..make every weld better than your last and have fun..

I'm new to tig welding and I could be wrong but....it looks like you actually need a little more amps. Maybe 135. The weld pool should not take that long to initiate. After the weld pool starts, GET MOVING or you will blow holes through. This more heat method will actually make your heat affected zone much smaller especially if you keep the tungsten close to the base metal. Mind you that my welds dont look perfect either but I practice daily. Time....will make me better.

It all takes some time. Just one note on safety. I got hollered at for not bending the back inch of filler rod as it is dangerous to eyes. Like getting shot with a gun if a stranger runs into it. Eye pokes not fun 👀.

Hi bro, more electrode stick out.. change you black cap to a smaller cap.. use more amps and get in and get out before the aluminium gets too hot. Run 20-30 percent more amps than recommended example 1mm to 40 amps theory .. 3mm aluminium straight butt joints I running 150 amps.. inside tee joints 165 amps .. if your too slow at the start of the weld it catches up on you with the heat input, then your catching your tail.. keep practising, I hardly use a foot pedal..
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10

Good stuff! I think I am just too slow. What you explained makes sense. I get to concentrating on the puddle and forget about how much heat I'm dumping into the work piece. If I use more amps, I'll have to really get to moving right? You suggest more amps to get a puddle quicker? Do I understand that correctly? Then using the filler to help cool the puddle?

one thing I see you have contaminated your tungsten when ever you seen green type arc its no go you need to regring the tungsten with a grinder that only for grinding tungsten if you use you bench grinder that you us for every day your containing ALL you tungsten in beding metals into the tungsten ( when people buy a tig welder thare a ton of other things you need to have its not just cost of welder ) I had guy that wanted to do stainless work and explained to him the cost to get started $800 plus $400-700 for every thing else . I buy filler rods on amazon or Ebay I have never HF they only have 3-4 choice and its 1 pound when I buy filler its in 10 pound box or welder supply store I pick up 2-3 pounds . Er5356 is just fine to use it takes more heat but works good and if your going to paint the metal 4043 is not for painting
