I used the Nokia E63 during my college as well. My brother had salvaged two Nokia E63s, swapped around parts to get them working. The keyboard and back panel was black, but shell was white, it looked INSANE. I entered a science fair of sorts in my college, and at last moment was asked to sign up for a presentation event. as I didn’t have easy access to computer I made the presentation using the phone. I ended up winning the second place lol. Fun times.

Man, I love Symbian, going back to a real Symbian phone (Not S30+, though it's not too bad) is like a breath of fresh air for me, the UI is just snappy and the sleep modes it could utilize were second to none. Symbian was an OS built around the cellular system, not like todays phones where the OS's are adapted to the cellular system. Symbians wheel house was low power consumption devices with long battery life that made and received calls and texts. I have two E71 (Or 73, can't remember) that I got out of a phone recycle bin when I worked at a battery shop. They both still work, the batteries still last for a week, and they're very nice to use. If 3G wasn't shutting down in this year I'd make it my daily driver because it's nice. Also, that screen saver clock, the ultra reflective backing so you can see the screen in sunlight when the backlight is off is a nice touch. I miss phones like this.

Android and iOS are based on the Linux Kernel@@kreuner11
@GingerNingerGames
@GingerNingerGames 4 ай бұрын
@@kreuner11 Symbian was built from the ground up around the cellular system, meaning, it wasn't an existing OS adapted to work with cellular networks, it was designed with that in mind, so from the start, it was expected to have to manage radio communication, battery life, and run on very low power hardware. Android is modified linux, it started its life as linux and was adapted to low power hardware and made to work with cellular, the difference is in the possible efficiency the systems are capable of. Symbian is far and a way better at being a phone than android. iOS is also just a variant of linux (MacOS built off a linux distro way back in the day)
@kreuner11
@kreuner11 4 ай бұрын
@@GingerNingerGames I can see where you're coming from on the android thing, but IOS is not Linux at all, it uses the XNU kernel just like Mac OS, and I honestly don't see what core architectural value of Linux prevents it from being able to manage radio connections in a way to save battery. That's really the job of the userspace software at that point which Android is. Linux is the Kernel, GNU+adjacent stuff is the userspace on the computer, Android is the userspace on the phones

I'm nostalgic for the time cellphones manufacturers understood that people are different from each other and have different needs and wants for features. I.E. This was an incredibly featured phone in its day. My father got one, that later got passed to my mother, who used it until she got her first Android. It got relegated to being the “in between” phone (as in the phone used by whoever needed it if one lost or damaged one and was waiting to buy another. When Symbian lost WhatsApp support (something crucial where I live) and 3G support was phased out, I used it as a dedicated MP3 player (it sounds surprisingly good). I still have it in a shelf, but the battery holds no charge anymore. Maybe I’ll get one just to relive the memories lol😂

I'm still daily driving my E63, never owned a smartphone. It was a refurb when I got it 5 years ago - Now on it's 3rd battery, half the buttons' letters are worn off, and the case back is superglued on thanks to a busted latch. A micoSD card full of music and I'm good to go. Poor thing's starting to play up now, and as time goes on, I'm finding more and more often that having a bigger screen, usable camera and mobile internet is worth changing over to the realm of Nightmare Rectangles.

I remember Symbian being quite capable. It was easy to use, you could install apps and games, it had a file manager, task manager, you could even install a different, proper one. Funny, i was just cleaning out my storage unit and found some of the old phones i was using back in the day, havent seen them in years, they are much smaller than i remember them to be. Like, i thought N95 had this big screen and was kinda bricky, but its a tiny little thing compared to what im carrying around now
@vadnegru
@vadnegru 4 ай бұрын
I also remember N95 being a pipe dream to us, because it was. Not that many phones have a freaking hard drive, right? Also you could even use custom launcher with those phones. Ability to play Java made it that most of games on these devices were just Java apps. So there weren't any difference between them and dumb LG or Samsung. Despite being capable of playing 3D Assassins creed game.

I wrote papers for school on it, loaded it to the max with MP3s, used the Ovi Maps for GPS navigation (I had unlimited data, too. Crazy flex for 2010-ish, huh?!) Looking back, it was so funny that it was the first phone I ever had with Wifi support, but we didn't even have internet at the house at the time. 😂 Ohh, those were the days... I used it for ages, then passed it to my little sister when I upgraded to the HTC Merge, my first touchscreen Android phone. But that's a story for another day. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, mate, that was fun!

Lastly that was a great budget phone It's primary use was the teen market for texting and social media Also a cheap alternative for productivity If you wanted media consumption you could have gone for the symbian S40 v3 lineup with touchscreens

I had an X2-00. S40, but no touchscreen, little it mattered though, as I managed to clog the in-ears that came with, from listening to countless hours of what cretan folk tunes I could muster. I still listen to those files in my 6.1!

That Nokia, I had one at one point, I loaned it to someone and they... I do not know what was on it up x-x. I did get the Wifi AP application for it!
