If you don't have a vacuum sealer, a good alternative is to fill a plastic rectangular jug (think cereal container) with water. Slowly place your ziplock bags in the water and slowly bring the water level to the top of the bag. Seal the bag starting at one corner and slowly immerse the bag as you are closing the zip closure. You get to the other corner and voila! No air in the ziplock. Life hacks are great! 😊

I started bleeding fish out a couple of years ago. It's an absolute game changer for better looking and tasting fillets. I typically do it as the last thing before I head in with the boat, and do it in the live well. That way, the live well cleans itself out and the fish are dispatched when I clean them on shore. Great videos!
@calebwistad Жыл бұрын
Yes. I definitely do it that way sometimes as well. If I have a long drive I’ll even bleed them out in the livewell and just dump a bag of ice or two in there on top of them on the way home.

Great ! that you can take the time and explain in detail the do’s and dont’s I am retired now and look forward to spending time out on the water fishing in northern Wisconsin Close to the Great Lake Superior. Many of us like to fish and eat fish but do not know the steps to take Your catch to the dinner table. I have friends who fish a lot but catch and release because actually They do not know how to clean what they catch. Keep up your informed knowledge, because I have learned and plan on watching more Thanks

I am highly allergic to fish. That being said I am a fishing guide in northern Wisconsin and appreciate the video. I have some friends that are horrible at fillets. When they are doing so bad I want to jump in and take the risk to do a better job. I do however gut and bleed my trout and salmon harvests on the spot. Great video for proper care of the harvest! Thanks and tight lines.

Good video! I definitely have always been a big advocate for bleeding and thoroughly icing. I have one suggestion for your fridge storage. I'd take it a step further than just putting in a zip loc. Instead, put it in a zip lock as you showed, but submerge that in either an ice water brine or crushed ice in a bucket. Most of the time household fridges aren't running cold enough to really maintain the best freshness, so plunging that fish in ice will help chill it just a bit more. Store this bucket in the fridge. I use 1-2 gallon buckets, they fit well in my fridge. i've kept fish up to 7 days like this with no loss of freshness. I really liked the squeegie tip. Already ordered one. Good idea!
@calebwistad Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That’s a good idea to extend the life of your fish a couple days! I know I’ve got 5 days at fridge temps but I bet I could get 7 with that tip. Thanks! And yes, the squeegee is a godsend!

Another great video! Have you ever heard of the Japanese method of dispatching fish for maximum flavor and texture? It's called Ike-Jime and you have pretty much nailed the basic principles. Good tips and thanks!

If you fish out of a small boat/raft/kayak, the clam ice live well works absolutely fantastic in the summer time also.

Great video I do these almost identical except I keep my fish in a ice water slurry to chill then. Also when I am trolling in the yak I have a stringer to drag them behind for a bit to bleed them out the put them in the cooler I don't want all that warm blood to melt/ warm up my cooler water and stain my cooler
@calebwistad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I agree, ice water works better than straight ice. Also bleeding fish out either in the livewell or on the stringer is ideal. Nice clean fish goes in the cooler that way!

Great instructional! So at what point do you gut the fish? Like do I bleed the fish put it on ice and then gut and filet.. or do I bleed the fish gut the fish put it on ice and then filet?
@calebwistad5 ай бұрын
I don’t typically gut my fish unless I’m keeping them for more than 24 hours on ice. I don’t gut them when I fillet them. Just cut around.

You should try using an Iki Jime tool to kill your fish. With clubbing them on the head it's too easy to make mistakes and have to keep hitting them. It may sound fast enough but if someone repeatedly beat you in the head with a baton or bat until they got it right you might feel differently :-) Kill them, cut to bleed them and throw them on ice where the muscle can firm up and push the blood out. I like to soak them in a bowl of salt water overnight as well which gets out any blood that might be left in the fillet. They always taste awesome this way.
@calebwistad Жыл бұрын
I have definitely considered it and I am actually planning on purchasing one to give it a try. Seems like the way to go!

I don't have a vacuum sealer so I just freeze in water. What is your opinion using this method?
@calebwistad Жыл бұрын
I definitely have better luck with vacuum freezing but freezing in water helps with freezer burn if you plan to freeze them a long time.

I never understood why someone wouldn't bleed their fish out. not only do they taste better but when you cook it, you get glistening white meat. I bleed mine out in a live well, like mentioned below, live well cleans itself. If's a hot day, that blood dry's in cooler and you have a lot of scrubbing. When I didn't have a live well,, I bleed them out on a stringer in the lake. If you do it this way, get the fish on the stringer first. You want to cut them & get them in the cold water as fast as you can. This slows down the coagulation of the blood (clotting) they bleed out more. I personal don't use a knife for this, found that sometimes it was like trying to hand saw. Get a pair of Fiskars 5/8 in. Cut Capacity Titanium Coated Steel Blade with Non-Slip Grip Anvil Hand Pruning Shears. $15 at Home Depot. Open them up and and slide the throat in till you get to the back and snip. Easy peasy. Make sure you rinse or wipe blade of so they don't gum up. Also, these have a life time warranty. if the blade dulls, call friskar with the number stamp on blade and they will send you a new one.

Actually, the lakes would be in much better shape if people kept fish that were just legal side let the larger fish they catch grow and reproduce. It amazes me how we get that wrong in our sport.

Approximately how long can you keep fish fillets frozen in a baggie of ice and still be good eating?
