00:00 Hello Everyone!
02:20 GAME STARTS!
02:50 Completely New Game!
21:45 Game Ends!
The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.
Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

Maybe a little too much Rapport for a WCC game by Ding 😂 Jokes aside, remember how Magnus played all the sharp lines and Sicilians against Fabi in 2018 but chose much quieter positions against Nepo last time? Clearly feel the need to suppress Nepo's strong intuition in crazy attacking positions. Interestingly, Nepo also seems to relax and go for richer positions this time against Ding than he did against Magnus

Ding only qualified for the candidates by ccp tournaments without international players, they propped him up to have enough games to enter the candidates tournament. Then he only received his invite 1 week before the start of the candidates, so nobody prepared against him. I love that Ding has Rapport as a second -- their styles are so complementary, and Richárd is maybe one of the only players that can take Ian into a deep dark forest. h3 did not make Ding loose the game. But it gives up on taking advantage with white pieces, which is precious in a world championship match. It's not really h3. h3 force Nepo to enter territory QGA which he doesnt familiar with. As result he lost a lot of times in the opening (which rare), so it should be counted as success. But the continuation is questionable. Nxc5 was typical ding's move, he's played it before. Nxf6 has lot of practical chances and invites complications. But gxf response from Ian, didn't responded back by Ding decently as he continues his preparation to push e4, which is the RIGHT continuation if Nepo had played qxf6.

Rapport has been my favorite even way before he started counseling Ding. His play reminds me of Bobby.

18:40 I believe that Anish at this point said that the position played itself for black, which made him think of Hans' infamous quotation, which made him remember that dream or nightmare.

Ding can share his 80s music passion with Rapport but he should ignore his opening advice. Lost after 16 moves with white in a WC match. 4 h3? was a red rag to Nepo's bull.

I am loving this match so far; I expect we'll see decisive games from both sides which is something we haven't had in a world chess championship in a long time.

Don't apologize for lengthy analysis. It's the title match, after all. Interesting at 14:39 is BxPd3, NxBd3 / b3 but it seems to be much better for Black. What does your engine say?.... The 2-rook sac that was not played is awesome

From winning here and having promising "easy" WC title, to loosing in last rapid battle. The Circle of Chessplayer has been completed. Congrats Ding, thank you Nepo - both gave us this kind of vibe and goosebumps during this WC.

Hi Agad, in your analysis after white's 11th move; you showed black castling queen side. This should not be possible since the white bishop is on F4?

I just love this idea of choosing your professional partner based on his merit on the field but then always having that secondary less talked about opportunity of becoming great friends with him along the way as well

Richard being Ding’s second is a plus and a minus for him. A second’s job shouldnt be to change the players best style. Its to help him find weakspots in the opponents game. Right now it just feels like Ding is isnt playing HIS games. It feels like he’s playing RICHARD’s games which quite frankyly doesnt suit Ding. Its like when King Saul was trying to give David his armour to slay Goliath but David said “I have not proved this yet so thanks but no thanks”. Ding needs to stick to HIS playing style.

@NostalgicDouchebag Dings performance is extremely unstable since the beginning of Corona. Even though Ian suffered a devastating loss in the last WCC, but that one game was a masterpiece, he seems more mentally prepared now.

Why not? 1984 Karpov-Kasparov match started with 5-0 for Karpov before Kasparov won even a single game. Or how about Spassky-Fischer whitch started with Fischer losing his game by blundering a bishop- and yet it's still considered to be a classic match, one of the best of all time. The history of WCC matches is full of twists, turns and upsets. It's really only been Carlsen's matches that were snoozfests made up of boring draws.
