This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

#suggestion Please keep making any future sagas like this one. We do not mind at all that you make them so detailed and that they run over the course of one, two, or three years. They are sagas and sagas are meant to be long and epic. Shortening them and presenting only the best games of a particular player would really make them lose so much, particularly concerning the narrative aspect that is so educational and enjoyable!

“First, then, Paul Morphy was never so passionately fond, so inordinately devoted to Chess as is generally believed. An intimate acquaintance and long observation enable us to state this positively. His only devotion to the game, if it may be so termed, lay in his ambition to meet and to defeat the best players and great masters of this country and of Europe. He felt his enormous strength, and never, for a moment, doubted the outcome. Indeed, before his first departure for Europe he privately and modestly, yet with perfect confidence, predicted to us his certain success, and when he returned he expressed the conviction that he had played poorly, rashly; that none of his opponents should have done so well as they did against him. But, this one ambition satisfied, he appeared to have lost nearly all interest in the game.” - Charles de Maurian

I would have thought that, at this stage of the game, a Q for two Rooks won’t necessarily be the end of the road. White could only get one Check and then Black could block or move to an uncheckable position; certainly not a winning position unless Black contrived to get a Rook on White’s back rack, but Morphy is light years from falling for such simplistic manoeuvres // Great Game. The tables begin to turn, slightly. Thanks Agad.

Morphy is like the Borg. After a couple of shots from his opponents he adapts his shields and never loses again. Resistance is futile.

Iam really struggling with seeing my opponents strategy in calculating moves ahead in order to set up an advantageous position of attack, what can I do to foster this insight into my game, thank you for any suggestions

I don't mean to be rude but just calm down. It makes wonders for me. I usually just look for attacks and what I can do, I am quite impatient myself. So calming down and playing slowlier helps me taking a look at what the opponent can do. Tactics will help you with your brain power calculations and learning theory and the reasoning behind will help you filter more efficiently through good and bad ideas.
