Imagine losing a drawn endgame OMEGA LUL -is what I would say if I were an avid twitch troll, honestly great game by both of them and impressive technique from levon to get out a win against hikaru's tricks. Also can we appreciate how agadmator goes out of his way to give us extra context's for some games? Knowing small things like hikaru's situation and how he must win the game just add much more to the games. Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work agadmator!

I had reached this endgame in an over the board simultaneous exhibition against a FIDE master (I was the weaker side). I have been defending correctly for some time but at some point I made a wrong move after which the FIDE master found the winning move and I decided to resign as whatever I play would result in either checkmate or rook loss. He later explained the methods to draw this kind of endgame, so it would seem some players indeed study these rare endgames. Keep up the great and hard work, Antonio!

According to the endgame tablebase, the move at 5:00 ...Ka1 was the losing move. Up until then it was a draw, there it says White wins in 23 moves. Black should play ...Ka3 instead. At 5:24 ...Rc1+ is indeed the best defense, but white maintains a winning position if he plays the counterintuitive Kd3 instead of Kb3 (which is a draw due to the stalemate tricks shown in the video) Levon's technique here is very clean though.

I've spent quite a few hours solving studies with this material. It's fairly complicated. And indeed, the second row defense with the rook, resulting in stale mate, is the key resource. These 'simple' endgames are quite difficult, the most complex one is 2 N & K vs. pawn and King. It was incredibly impressive how Karjakin managed to win such an endgame, some time back. You bet he studied and practiced that ending a fair bit, otherwise he wouldn't have stood a chance.
@randomlife7935
@randomlife7935 4 жыл бұрын
In the Karjakin game that you mentioned, his opponent had the knight pawn, which is a theoretical draw. The only winning construction is when the opponent has a bishop pawn. It's so true that such constructions are very tricky and needs to be thoroughly studied. Coupled with extreme time trouble, one can only admire these super GM's when they demonstrate techniques that us mere mortals struggle hard to master.
@RealCurrencies
@RealCurrencies 4 жыл бұрын
@@randomlife7935 I think it depends how far advanced the g (or b) pawns are. If I remember correctly, if they have only advanced to the fourth rank (from the perspective of the defender), it's winning for the Knights.

I thought I was hallucinating, because there is no forced checkmate in the position at 6:09 if black plays Kd1. The bishop may cover d2, but it doesn't cover e2, which is the black king's escape square. I played through it on an engine and it agreed with me. But it's still winning for white, because Ra1+ Ke2 Rxg1 picks up the rook and while a KRB vs. KR endgame may be a theoretical draw, a KRB endgame against a lone king isn't.

12:31 -- Qxb3 is the losing move, as it forfeits crucial tempo to snatch the meaningless doubled pawn. If Bf4 instead (the plan all along), Black should be able to hold a fortress for a draw (meaning Nakamura doesn't win, and so, loses). A bishop on g4 locks the center while threatening White's g- and h-pawns, meaning that it's at least as valuable as any rook White devotes to babysitting the g-pawn.

Obviously, Agad has read "My System" by Niemzovich where he used the word prophylaxis.

I've had a few games that ended up with a rook and bishop against a bishop, but none that ended up rook and bishop vs rook. I've had a few that ended with bishop and knight vs king, but only when I throw away material just to torture my opponent for not resigning.

Agadmator, would you take time to explain how the players are monitored with online tournaments. Any explanation on how the arbitrator interact with the two players during their game for an example.

It happened to me today and I lost by timeout. The interesting part is I was the one with a rook and bishop. 🙄

At min 0:55 i think you are wrong. If Bd2 then you just push the pawn. Black has no time to both eat your bishop and then protect the queening square.
