The FIDE Grand Prix is taking place from December 11-23 2019. The 16-player knockout is the 4th of four legs of the 22-player Grand Prix series that will determine two places in the 2020 Candidates Tournament. Players compete in 3 of the 4 tournaments, which each have a 130,000 euro prize fund, with 24,000 for 1st place. There are also from 1 (quarterfinal loser) to 8 (winner) Grand Prix points available, plus an additional point for each match win without tiebreaks. The overall series prize fund is 280,000, with 50,000 for 1st place.
Each round consists of two games of classical chess, with a time control of 90 minutes/40 moves + 30 min to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If the match is tied two 25+10 rapid games are played. If still tied, there are two 10+10 games, then two 5+3. Finally a single Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 (with a 2-second increment from move 61) but Black wins the match with a draw. Official website: worldchess.com

Butterfly Vision if Mvl loses, he still has 2 out of 3 wildcard spots, so there is still a chance that he can qualify but since candidates is hosted by Russia they might find some way to make alekseenko get the wild card spot.

They can choose whomever they want who satisfies the conditions. The purpose was to guarantee a Russian in the candidates. But Sasha is confirmed there and Nepo very likely. So they might make a tiebreak between Aleksenko and MVL

to those who have questions about the wild card process, here is an attempt to improve our vast knowledge: The organisers (the Russian Federation as the tournament is in Ekaterinburg) picks the wild card, but they can't pick whoever they want. The wild card needs to fulfill one of the following 4 criteria: * highest ranked non-qualified from the World Cup: MVL as 3rd * highest ranked non-qualified from Grand Swiss: Alekseenko as 3rd * highest ranked non-qualified from the Grand Prix: whoever finishes 3rd overall between either Nepo or MVL. (the other would finish 2nd and qualify directly) * Top-10 average rating over whole year: several players, including MVL. Nepo and Grischuk are the only Russians in this category. A couple of months back, when no Russian player was qualified yet, the Russian Federation said in a press conference they would make sure there would be at least a Russian player partecipating by organizing a mini-match between the Russians eligible to get wild card. Since then, Grischuk has already qualified via the Grand Prix. if Nepo also does by finishing second it means the only Russian eligible for the wild card is Alekseenko, but also that the Russians would already have 2 players and MVL would have been the one to miss out the qualification by the smallest margin in 3 of the paths, which is insane... I hope they at least give him a chance to play Alekseenko, but they are not obliged to. If MVL qualifies, it looks likely Nepo would play Alekseenko for the wild card spot.
@estateincs
@estateincs 4 жыл бұрын
If anyone thinks Alekseenko deserves to be there over MVL they are smoking dust.

I would like to add that Only a person who played in atleast 2 of the 3 qualifing tournament (Grand Prix, World Cup, Grand Swiss) is eligible for the wild card spot. this means Anand cannot be the wild card as he only participated in the Swiss. So the people who are eligible for the wild card spots a) Nepo/MVL(Highest non-qualifier in Grand Prix) b) Kiril Alekseenko(Swiss) c)Shakriyar Mamedyarov(Top ten in terms of rating d)Levon(Top 10 in terms of rating) Edit:Replaced Wesly with Levon
@jonosphere
@jonosphere 4 жыл бұрын
@@eccentrichorse11 Thank you for expanding the info!! That is really a very short list. I would add a little asterisk, for completeness sake. Wesley So is currently in 10th place on average, but Aronian is extremely close and they both lost games this month (Aronian to Magnus and Ding, So to Nepo). I don't know their remaining schedule but it is quite possible that Aronian overtakes So.
@eccentrichorse11
@eccentrichorse11 4 жыл бұрын
@@jonosphere I was incorrect. Fide publishes rating lists at the beginnig of every month. The person who is among the top 10 by average rating from each of the rating lists Febraury 2019 to January 2020 can be selected as the wild card (if he particaptes in 2 of the qualifying events) Since neither one plays in any more tournaments in december, their current live ratings of 2773.4(Levon) and 2764.6 (Wesly) will be published in the January 2020 rating list. Using this I have calculated their average ratings Levon: 2763.53 Wesly: 2763.88 Hence Levon has the higher rating and can be a wildcard but not wesly

Maybe I'm exaggerating this but the fact that the wildcard to the candidates will be given to a Russian player is not only unfair in itself, but maybe announcing it before the end of the Grand Prix might have put some significant pressure on MVL. Although he's still up in points, he knows he has to win to get his spot, whereas Nepo can relax : whatever the result, he's first in line to the wildcard.

MVL also does great when he goes for the Grunfeld. He wins and loses all his black games on it.

Honourable Doctor Edwin Moriarty yeah but majority of his grunfiled games hes always failed to cooperate his pieces and most of the time one of the knight becomes useless

C classical, R rapid, B blitz. I think there was also an E once, which was exhibition and a P which was puzzle. If you'll see an A, that eould probably be armageddon, but I don't remember actually seeing it.
