Today I attempt scenario three during my AGE OF EMPIRES 1 campaign gameplay! This one turned out to be quite the challenge and I ended up having to restart several times!

Tips: Use control groups. They make switching between your bowmen and your priest much easier. Consider using slow speed during fights. This makes unit control easier by giving you more time to react. Save scum. The first fight is extremely random and has to go perfectly. Saving after having it go well once means you don't have to keep playing through it again every time you restart.

oh the nostalgia...the hours i ve spent playing these as a kid )))). very cute games.. but very tough... they didnt hold back on difficulty back in the days.

19:29 Priests can heal each other. It's just that the pathing is terrible, and the priests couldn't work out how to walk around your composite bowmen, so they couldn't get close enough to actually do it, even though they were right next to each other! The pathing in pre-2000 RTS games always seems to be broken in different ways - in Starcraft your units will walk across the entire map to find an alternate route instead of waiting for a unit in front of them to move out of the way, and in Age of Empires they won't move at all if their path is blocked.

@@PixelPosie The trick with maps like these is to use priests to just heal, keep boats away from catapults and archers/towers by scouting and then land and use hit and run tactics on the enemies. When dealing with catapults, use a single archer to fire at them by concentrating on one at a time to take it out while timing the hit and run so you can get away from the blast radius of the stone hitting the ground and learn to time the boat to return so you can be picked up to be healed and repeat if needed. Takes lots of practice.

In my opinion, one of the crucial differences between new and elder RTSs is, that nowadays they are like: "Ok! Here's your objective, here's the path, here's the enemy, here are resources, conveniently placed all together. Have fun, who-ho! ^_^" And back in the day they were more like: "GET YA BUM OUTTA HERE AND DO IT! WE AIN'T TELLING YOU S***T!!!" 😂

This mission's objective: "Defeat the Hittites" What could be a simpler instruction than that? "Complete the campaign"? "Win the game"? 😂

@maximakulov3118 Haha yeah, I definitely feel like RTSs were harder back in the day. This game was hard when I was a kid and I still find it hard as an adult.

You were on the right track when you were attacking Brown, except you were killing his villagers, you shoulda been converting them! Then getting them into your transport so you can build a base and create units of your own! Also you really should save when things are going well, it makes your life easier :P

I guess I never thought to convert Brown’s villagers because my aim was to destroy him as quickly as possible and finish the silly scenario once and for all, lol! I suppose I could’ve saved after successfully converting the second priest, but nothing went well after that! :D Thanks for watching!

Yes not intuitive I know. I usually go with if they give you resources and no base / Villagers then the plan is for you to steal them. (Also in this particular mission your tech level is Post-Iron which means all possible research is done and as a result your Priests can steal buildings except Town Centres and Wonders) I dunno I think you did pretty well overall, you knew straight away to Wololo Red's Priest and boat, scouted the map well and were using your range advantage over Brown too.

This is a strange one for sure. I think there's a pretty clear intended path of first sailing west and getting the yellow villager to build your base in the middle, but it's weird how the devs didn't give you say a couple of cavarly to deal with those catapults. It's almost like they expect the player to be a micro expert. The way the AI behaves here is also really cool, how red will always bring their transport reactively once you try to convert their units, and the yellow vil always stays in place. You'd almost think the game had custom scripting! Otherwise the AI is rarely this reliable.

Yes the AI is quite predictable in this one! I think I have two choices here: I can destroy the catapults and convert the villager, or try and convert the catapults and villager. The latter I’m struggling with, though. But I will keep trying! Thanks so much for watching! :)

You kept making mistakes should I even say more than usual. 1) Priests can heal each other, but they were stuck in an unusual position because of how the bowman were placed. 2) There are plenty of ways to get the catapults/villager on the west island. a) load just the archers in the transport, kill the catapults. get the archers to another island. come with the priests to get the villager b) if you want a catapult do the same but kill just one catapult. That way it will be half as difficult. 3) here would be very useful to use diplomatic stances. Just set everyone on neutral and you won't be able to accidentally kill anything. Switch them pack after getting both priests. (and western island if you decide on that) 4) I'm really disappointed the thought that your archers might outrange the towers never even crossed your mind. You more like accidentally stumbled upon it. 5) Use save / load game if the mission requires it (like in this case)

There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes - that’s how you learn! 1) Priests have to be hugging to heal each other - gotcha. I sometimes forget how old this game actually is. 2a) It’s an idea but would take longer to finish the campaign. And by that time Brown has built an entire city. 2b) That might work! I manage to convert one catapult but can’t seem to get the second. 3) That’s a good idea so I don’t keep killing the second priest. 4) I’m playing like 12 different games right now. In most of them, archers don’t outrange towers. So no, the thought didn’t cross my mind. 5) I didn’t really get far enough in the game to require saving but next time I will save after converting the second priest and save again hopefully if I get a catapult. Thanks for the help! :)

I've been playing RTS games for over 25 years and i would have made the same assumption you did so you needn't apologize for that. Saving is honestly the best out of all the tips you got so far. Saving and loading a lot is just how these older games were played. The rest is trial and error, you'll figure it out eventually as you always do.
