I listened to all the downsides and actually felt encouraged to get a clip on. All the negatives either don't apply or I'm willing to accept. I'm not getting thermals for predator hunting (albeit it will be used for it), and I'm only planning to use it for a single rifle, which I'll primarily need to use the day optic (1-6). The StingIR looks great, once I make the plunge.

Pros of a clip-on: Not dealing with the short eye relief that comes with most dedicated thermal weapon sights. A clip on projects an image through your LPVO in a way that allows for an amazingly large image that takes up the entire ocular lens of your scope at anything 2x and beyond. Also as far as saving zero profiles: it’s not difficult to write down your X & Y screen adjustments for each rifle. It takes all of 10 seconds to change the collimation settings in the menu. Not being able to save your zero profile is a null issue.

the biggest issue with clip-ons is performance. A scope is generally has more range, longer battery life, greater resolution, and a higher refresh rate. Also the eye relief on thermal scopes is the same or better than LPVOs.

Hey so here's an idea then. You guys said you would have to columate the thermal to each rifle each time. Why don't you just allow for a number of different collumated presets that allow for a label or numerical association. This shouldn't be very difficult to do as it is simply a software change. You guys would probably also be the pioneers in this concept. Just an idea. Great products.

If a dedicated thermal can have 25 different scope preset zeros for different rifles then there's no reason a clip on cannot have 5 collimation presets to easily switch to a few different setups.
@LongFatJohnston
@LongFatJohnston 8 ай бұрын
@@thegraewolf What's the benefit to clipping on a less powerful device when you can just remove your optic entirely with QD mounts, put on a thermal or NV with QD mounts, select the preset, and start shooting? Repeatable zero isn't a problem with modern high quality optics so I personally see no benefit getting a clip on.
@thegraewolf
@thegraewolf 8 ай бұрын
@@LongFatJohnston several that I can think of without having the benefit of trying out either setup beforehand. I have 4 or 5 rifles I'd like to able to use, and 3 of those rifles I would prefer not to change my current scope mounts. Although, if I did, something quality like a Spuhr qd mount is what I what upgrade to and those are about 500 each, so 1500 would have to be added in to the upfront cost. Then there are a couple other red dots and an lpvo that I could use it on. I'm not completely ignoring the advice of many experienced thermal users. I haven't ruled out getting a dedicated. But that would mean changing setups on several rifles I'm currently very happy with as well as significant added expense. Additionally, I'm ok with it being good/adequate on numerous rifles than optimal dedicated on 1 or 2. I think, fwiw, I've narrowed it down to 2 I'd consider. The incendis pro or a bering optics super yoter C.

@@LongFatJohnstonmost of my hunting rifles have non QD mounts and I don't want to switch to QD. That's my reason. QD mounts are heavier and while very reliable, I'm not risking it on a 7 day backpack hunt where I am likely to take a 400-600 yard shot.

I am in Texas. I have the Rattler 25. Because of the lower magnification. Ideal for hog hunting. It is the 385 or whatever. I also have your lower end monocular. 150 reso 156 maybe. I have your white phos pvs14. The handheld can be a great supplement to the pvs14 even a budget friendly one. I would like to try a clip on. I have one AR with 1-4x. If I throw a clip on in. I could have a do all. I just use the Streamlight HIR pistol light on the rail at 12:00. To shot under nightvision, they work great for me. I am going to look into that smaller clip on. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video. I think in going clip-on. I had a 384 quick mount thermal break. I'm going with the clip because I use an old ATN clip on and have had great success with it. Theremal is where it's at though. I like the clip on NV because I can use on on my pellet rifles, .22s, and hog rifles. I think using my favorite rifles and havinf flexibility is better. I just want to be sure though. Every time it is switched t9 a different rifle I will need to align the redicle correct?

I have a dedicated scope. It's one of the mid-range rattlers, I've seen what buying a high-end clip-on but the one thing I can absolutely agree with even without trying one is the magnification issues. If the cost is the same then it's pointless to buy a clip on.

Oh and also to add why people use QD levers is generally not to swap optics between different rifles but to allow for usage of another optic while not having to rezero when I replace my main optic. For instance I don't hunt and shoot with my thermal all of the time. As a matter of fact that's not the purpose for the build but because I have a quality qd mount in able to remove my regular dot and swap out for my thermal which happens to also be zeroed and retains zero when reattached. It's a very convenient and cost effective way to have a main building that also can be turned into a thermal capable hunting machine only for the cost of a slightly more expensive mount, rather than a full rifle build.

I have two clip ons with one of those being thermal and one is NV. I use both between between 3 different weapons so I don’t use the collimating feature of the thermal. I have to adjust zero for whatever combo I’m using. I just have an index card taped to my stocks with three different zeros for each weapon. That means you have to use a scope that is repeatable. Even your above average hunting scopes will not be effective in that area. This means more money for better quality optics. Other than being able to use different platforms the clip on shines on target in my opinion. I have two dedicated thermal scopes and know other people with dedicated scopes and most of the time you will not be able to sight in a dedicated thermal with the same precision that you can with a clip on because with the clip on you’re adjusting you’re day optic (with my method) and the dedicated thermal scopes the cross hair adjust usually one pixel at a time which can mean at say a normal 200 yard hunting zero it’s near impossible to get your weapon to hit dead on. The biggest downside to a clip on for me is the weight on the front of your weapon because most clip on are not Sting IR size. I would love to compare it to my rattler.

@jerrybooher69
@jerrybooher69 5 ай бұрын
@terrycrissman7392 well the image will be better on a dedicated optic rather than a clip on I like the clip on because I can save the zeros and switch between a few different rifles plus I can just pop it off and run it without and not loose zero but the negative is a lvpo is were a a clip on really shines anything above 6x and the image gets really grainy and pixilated to my range is under 400yards to get any further would require alot more cash and a 50m clip on 640 or higher

Looking at the clip-on option to carry in my hunting backpack. I'm color-blind and would like the option to shoot 1 hour before and 1 hour after daylight. I used a nAGM Rattler TS19-256 last season as a dedicated rig and didn't like it. The pic was not great, there was no depth perception, looking at the screen for prolonged periods made my eyes sore and gave me a headache. Given my use case 100-200 yards max and only needing it for a couple hours a day, would I be better served to get a clip-on or a dedicated upper/rifle? The main thing is I didn't like looking through the digital screen and the eye fatigue it caused. Also, carrying a separate gun with a dedicated thermal would be impractical for weight and pack-space reasons. My hunting rig runs a dedicated 3-12x56mm Swaro optic.

Great topic, don't necessarily agree with your thoughts but thats ok, I started with a clip on, went to a dedicated unit and returned to yet again a clip on. The reason I prefer the clip on is if the unit packs it in or you get caught out with flat batteries remove the unit clip on your Olight and keep hunting, your outing is not fully wrecked, doesent happen you might say or carry spare batteries, well in 4 years I had 2 major failures with the dedicated unit which was sent off for warranty leaving me weeks without a scope, by the same token I had the propriety battery pack it in on my clip on, again leaving me without a usable unit. Having used thermal for the last 6 years as a professional feral controller in my experience the clip on is more versatile and safer in a breakdown, oh and both scope and clip on's were top end units, they stuff up also not just the budget or mid range ones.

They kind of danced around the "tactical" considerations. If it goes to sh!t and you're limited to one rifle (keep it simple, keep it light) then you'll want to have a quick option to switch between daylight and night optic capability. In my mind, and as mentioned a few times here, there are two routes to achieve the switch, and both involve good, reliable return to zero quick detach (QD) mounts. Option 1) Have a 1×-?× lpvo and thermal each mounted to QDs and exchange as needed. Option 2) Have a 1x-?× lpvo either QD or hard mounted and then use a thermal "clip on" (such as the Stinger) QD mounted to add for night ops. Due to weight and simplicity considerations, I think I'd go with option 2.
