Interesting, the Snow Witch is definitely one of the most mysterious figures in the game. If her name is Renna it might be safe to speculate that she is related to Rennala and Ranni, perhaps as the Grandmother. The word Crone is a BIG clue. This leads into ideas about Paganism, and there is one that you'll find interesting. There's the idea of what's called the Triple Goddess. The Mother, Maiden, and the Crone. Each represent phases of a woman's life and phases of the Moon. Each one presides over the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. Renna is a wraith caller associated with calling spirits from the dead, Rennala is associated with rebirth into the physical realm, and Ranni is an Empyrean associated with matters pertaining to the highest heavens. Fits pretty nicely, right? The Snow Crone is Ranni's Grandmother. Also knowing a bit of Norse mythos, Ice and space are part of the primordial void known as Ginnungagap where the embers of stars and ice in the aether coalesced and melted to create the first giant Ymir (whose body made the world). And also into Celestial Dew that collects and flows from great stag antlers down into rivers that gives new life to the dead in the roots of the World Tree before being reborn. The name Renna also has a Latin origin meaning new life or rebirth, an Anglo-Saxon origin meaning river, and several other cultures with meanings like water, melt, family residing by a river, and night. I think that pretty much settles it on this one. :)

I strongly believe Renna is someone else because of the implications of the maiden-mother-crone triad and/or waxing-full-waning moon triad. Each of these characters fit an obvious and connected role. Ranni is the maiden, the waxing moon, she's a "young" soul and represents a new cicle to begin (The Age of the Stars). 🌒 Rennala is the mother, "Queen of the Full Moon", it's the most obvious of the three. She represents a time of abundance (Caria Royalty), fertility (as she has many children and the power of rebirth). 🌕 Renna is hinted as the crone, represented the waxing moon. A wise and old soul, a mentor, she's the end of the cicle. 🌘 The three are somehow connected to one another (Rennala/Ranni are mother/daughter, Renna/Ranni are mentor/student).

i really enjoyed the video. Renna though has such strong ties to the wraithcallers that it shouldn't be overlooked. They have 4 arms, reside mostly in liurnia (also can be found near the Cathedral of Manus Celes) and use sprit calling bells (wraithcalling bells), which is something that ranni/renna gives us to summon spirit ashes. And Ranni's spirit being tied to a doll could also be a big clue that she probably learned this from Renna in order to to manipulate a corporeal form while sacrificing her body with the rune of death becoming a spirit herself. or ya know Ranni made it up as an alias and the snowy witch is just her and a persona she adopted to signify her dark moon. also i kind of doubt that the 2 fingers crashed right after fighting Radahn, rather the 2 fingers were always down there, but the way became unearthed after Radahn's defeat. we do find a ton of starlight shards in the cathedral upon our arrival. But if something was on the meteor it probably was Astel. (sorry for the block of text) Can't wait for more uploads!!

This video came at the perfect time. I just finished Elden Ring for the first time yesterday afternoon and did Ranni's ending. I'm glad you added the extra context to help make it all make sense.

Ranni's doll is modeled after the likeness of her teacher, and it looks like a Wraith Caller. They too have four arms and wield bells that can call spirits.

Am i the only one who thinks the biggest mystery of all is Torrents former master was? Like why did Torrent choose us? Was it a wish of the former master? It couldn't be Melina since why would she give Ranni something to give to us when we are already taking her with us. And how did Torrent come into Melinas possession? Did he just go with her knowing she would have an interest in finding us or someone like us? And if said master gave Ranni something for us why didn't he give Torrent to her as well? Like who has the balls to tell Ranni of all people to give something to whoever is riding Torrent. And how did said master come to be able to summon spirits? It doesn't make sense for Ranni to lie in that instance since she could have just left it somewhere for us to find or send Blaid to give it to us or give it to us after we decide to serve her. If it was just a matter of giving it to the player Melina could have easily done so with little reason besides helping us reach the tree with her.

Great work! Rennala was with Ranni when she met the Dark Moon though so I don't think it's possible that Ranni's encounter was after Rennala's decline.

Thing that bothers me about Ranni’s mentor is that she is described as a crone. But the doll Ranni’s inhabits, which is modelled after her mentor, doesn’t look anything like a crone. In fact, if you ask me, and I’ve felt this way since the very first story trailer where Ranni is revealed, she looks almost identical to Melina. I don’t think this means that Melina is Ranni’s mentor, when you summon Melina for the Morgott fight she uses exclusively incantations not snow sorceries, but there must be some connection here it’s uncanny. They even both have the one eye closed thing going on, whatever that’s for. Melina is at least Ranni’s half sister since she is likely the daughter of Marika and Radagon. Also who is Torrent’s former master? Through my play through I assumed it was Melina., since it turns out that she used to be a hero and given her established fondness for Torrent. If Melina is Torrent’s former master, then Ranni must be acquainted with Melina at the very least further connecting them. Ranni also expresses a concern for Torrent’s wellbeing when she meets you a second time. Though I do find it odd, if Melina gave Ranni the spirit bell to give to you she must have done it years ago, surely she wouldn’t give ranni the bell after meeting you she would have just given it to you herself. So if Melina is Torrent’s former master she was at some point acquainted with Ranni and left her the spirit bell before journeying out to find us. Alternatively, even though Melina currently has Torrent, ‘Torrent’s former master’ could be someone else entirely. Some mystery third person who is somehow connected to both Ranni, giving her the bell to give to Torrent’s future master, and Melina, to whom they bequeath Torrent. There’s something else, the 3 sisters area has 3 rises. One for Ranni, one for Renna, and one for…Selluvis? Ranni and Renna may be sisters but Selluvis for sure isn’t a sister of Ranni so did he take over someone else’s rise? And if so could this third person be a sister of Ranni and Renna? Are they the snowy witch crone? Did they mentor Ranni? Did they at some point own torrent? Did they have some connection to Melina (having a similar eye thing going on as well as going on to give Melina Torrent)?

I’ve a theory that Renna might be another Carian, and could be Rennala’s sister or relative of some sort. Her rise still stands today, along with Ranni’s (presumably inherited from Rennala) and Seluvis’s (whole can of worms, but I think it’s Sellen’s originally), making the Three Sisters. If she is a Carian, then she’d probably know the machinations behind Radagon’s marriage to Rennala and how (and why) it ended, then she sowed the seed for the Golden Order’s fall through Ranni. As for what happened to her, Sellen probably killed her for her graven school experiments, along with other named, probably powerful sorcerers whose rises are now empty. All headcanon though, except for the Sellen is a Carian part which I actually believe.

The legend is back

You are touching a lot on my theories, here is a copy-paste from my reddit post on it. There are just a few thoughts I had, that may support other theories including my time travel theory. Ranni first introduces herself as Renna, strange although many do not tend to put much thought into the notion, but little things like this tend to brood in me and make me think even harder. The name Renna is mentioned otherwise in the game. a Tower adjacent to Ranni's home is called 'Renna's Rise', what is even more interesting is that the area that these towers occupy is called 'The Three Sisters' and that is where this gets interesting. For this all to work you have to know my time travel/fragmented reality theory. This gets a little deep, so bare with me. It seems fairly obvious to me that the second Round Table Hold that you find in Leyndell is the in the current timeline and the one Melina brings you to is in the past since the one in Leyndell is identical but dilapidated. The biggest clue to this is the description of the Coded Sword that is found upon the throne of the Two Fingers in the Leyndell version of the Round Table Hold: "Hidden sword once granted to the Tarnished of the Roundtable by the Two Fingers. A formless cipher comprises its blade, which deals holy damage no shield can repel. Champions would gather at the Roundtable Hold in days long past, when the Two Fingers were masters of oration, their flesh yet full of vigor." Its not a secret that many believe that Ranni the Witch is Melina, and time travel would highly support this since Ranni’s real body is long dead. So Melina could be the past version of Ranni. In my theory, the event of the shattering actually fragmented reality itself, making different times as well as realities collide. I believe some characters are aware of this phenomenon, and some are not. Possible effected characters: Melina: Melina is Ranni Support for this theory is: 1) Ranni has a ghostly figure next to her that shares an eye with her, the eye is closed and would match Melina’s closed eye, it even has a similar symbol underneath. 2) Both Ranni and Melina fade away in similar fashion. 3) Both Ranni and Melina know Torrent Millicent: I think Millicent is Malenia, either from the past or from an alternate reality. Her ‘sisters’ could be from alternative realities as well (making 6 versions in all, more on that later) support for this theory includes: 1) her missing the same arm 2) her knowing the water foul dance 3) Gowry saying “No, she must embark on her journey, and stare her fate in the eye.” when speaking of her visiting Malenia at the Halig Tree. 4) Millicent believes she is related to Malenia in some way but can’t even ponder it herself, even mentioning she might be an “offshoot” of some kind. 5) Gowry when speaking of her death and personal decision to take out the needle he remarks “Millicent... Malenia... Do you detest us, so utterly?” of course he can be speaking of 2 people, but with everything else in consideration it can certainly be seen both ways. All of this of course would mean that Gowry is aware of the fragmentation of reality. One of the more important parts of my theory is that every alternative reality is governed by each of the six endings or (ages) being the perfect number as I mentioned earlier there are six alternate versions of Malenia/Millicent. Each possible age all ready has influence in the lands between even though they have not happened yet as they are all part of this fragmented timeline and clash of alternate realities. When an NPC invades it does so from another world or ‘reality’ the Urd tree and minor Urd trees act as conduits to the link between these worlds explaining why when you kill Urd Tree Avatars certain NPC invaders can no longer invade. When the Erdtree is set ablaze the the link is weakened causing the fire to seep into the time rift which results in the past version of the round table hold burning down, leading to it’s eventual current state that you find it in Leyndell. Another thought is about Melina's hands: Melina has scar tissue on her hands. This could mean she has been the burning maiden before in previous ages, she keeps trying to fix the broken timeline, in every age (alternate reality). With all that said, if this were true, then Ranni/Melina can freely move through time. Back to talking about Renna. Now we know that Ranni initiated the night of the 'Night of the Black Knives' and she states that it was her choice to eliminate her corporeal flesh but she never really states why, and this is my new theory. Ranni and Renna are two forms of the same being, just as Marika and Radagon are, and the Renna personality is The Gloam Eyed Queen, just as we see at the end of the Frenzied flame ending. This is not too hard to believe since Ranni is a daughter of Radagon, so this birth trait could be passed down. The family probably decided to present Ranni and Renna as sisters to hide the fact that they were the the same being, just as it was a well kept secret that Markia and Radagon were the same being. The name Renna would fit as a Daughter of Rennala as similar names befit the demigod offspring throughout the game. So perhaps, Ranni did this to destroy the evil side of herself after being warned by a future version of herself (Ranni the Witch) The Snow Witch armor states that the doll that Ranni now resides in is based on her old secret mentor: 'Once worn by the snowy crone who the young Ranni encountered deep in the woods. She was a witch, and well versed in cold sorceries. It is said that the doll that houses Ranni's soul was modeled after her. That old witch was Ranni's secret mentor.' Hopefully this is now starting to make sense. Ranni in her doll form traveled to the past to find her young self and warn her that her alter ego is destined to become the Gloam Eyed Queen and preform great atrocities after seeing it in an alternate age. She teaches her past self all that she knows, and that she must die. But it is not as simple as this, her future self knows that her own actions have absolutely destroyed the lands between, so she helps her young self permanently close her left eye with a magic seal in an attempt to keep the Renna persona at bay. and sends her off into the future, to try and find the Tarnished of legend to help her fix all of the collateral damage of the shattering, that was of course caused as a result of 'The night of the Black Knives" What she doesn't realize, is that it the Gloam Eyed Queen is actually created as a result of sending herself into the future, when in one of the alternate realities the Tarnished chooses to become the Lord of Frenzied Flame burning all including whatever power keeps the seal on the eye of Melina/Ranni causing it to fade and allowing her eye to open, and the Renna persona to awaken and become the Gloam eyed queen, swearing to follow you to the ends of time and deliver "Destined Death' to you. She travels back in time to commit the atrocities that were trying to be prevented in the first place, creating one big time paradox. The Three Sisters are the 3 personalities of the same being; Ranni, Renna, and Melina. Addendum: The description of The Blade of Calling, the knife wielded by Melina gives a hint ‘Dagger given to one who set out on a journey to fulfill her duty long ago. The power of its former owner, the kindling maiden, is still apparent. The one who walks alongside flame, Shall one day meet the road of Destined Death.‘ Let me know your thoughts. Like I said before, its just a theory. Even if you don't agree with it perhaps it will open more ideas.

I love Ranni’s character and how intriguing her story is, even though I don’t necessarily share her ideals. One thing I really can’t get over though is the fact that this supposed snow witch has such a similar name to her and Rennala, all while apparently not being related to them. It’s so confusing and kinda seems to go against the whole theme of family names (the “God” family line, Radagon->Radahn, Rennala->Renna/Ranni etc). During my first playthrough, for the longest time i assumed Renna was Ranni’s sister or something, up until I found the snow witch armor set, and that’s where it became confusing as hell and honestly kinda weird for me. Either DLCs are gonna clear this thing up, or it will forever remain kind of an odd story choice for me. Possibly the result of last minute lore changes (and we know a lot of those already happened before launch).

So I think there is some linear thinking constraining the theory making here. In our own world gods have gone by a myriad of names, even non mythological people have had multiple titles. The amount of time "Ranni" has existed is extremely long and she has likely gone by many names. Also what makes you think "mother" is our real world definition? Melina and multiple sources all reference the idea that being born of a "mother" is uncommon but that does not mean they do not have a "mother". Melina is the best example, she was not birthed as a baby, and i dont think those exist here, so what does that mean in this context? The way Ranni creates the shade of Renala makes me lean towards the idea that either the champion version of Renala was just ranni appearing as her or ranni could lend her power to renala at the time. I think many NPCs are looped in a weird time paradox and it may be what we see happening with Hyetta, I think Melina and Ranni are connected if not the same, and the breaking of the elden ring has allowed us to impact the world but more godly beings can not do so directlly. Malenia for example is clearly not a normal body, almost like another doll vessell, none of the gods are just dudes with a body, not even Radahn, he is a fallingstar beast.

My thoughts: 1: Based on other naming similarities in Elden Ring (Malenia/Miquella, Ranni/Rykard/Radahn/Rennala). I think it's a safe bet to say that Renna was at least related to the Carian family, perhaps a cousin. 2: I don't think Ranni's two fingers fell from the sky. There is way more discussion about the starS and how all of them are read and dictate fate, from characters who wouldn't even know about the details of Radahn and Ranni's conflict, if there was one. Nearly a quarter of the magic in Elden Ring is using the power of stars and space manifest, so the night sky having power is well established in many ways.

Good video, but I believe your theory about Radahn is off. War Counselor Iji has dialogue that goes as such when you are trying to figure out Ranni's questline: "Jerren. Now, that's a name I haven't heard for a while. Before taking up the banner of General Radahn, he was a guest of the Carian royal family. An expert swordsman, to be sure, but ever the eccentric. No surprise he'd get wrapped up in some festival. Oh, no, wait... How did I not see it before? I ought to retire as war counsellor for such a gross oversight! Let me explain. The fate of the Carian royal family is guided by the stars. As is the fate of Lady Ranni, first heir in the Carian royal line. But General Radahn is the conqueror of the stars. Who stood up to the swirling constellations, halting their movement in a smashing victory. And so, if General Radahn were defeated, the stars would once again resume their movement. As would Lady Ranni's destiny. Perhaps, even, revealing the elusive path. That leads to Nokron." This seems to lead to the fact that Ranni and Rykard (who has a portrait of Radahn in his Manor) do not seem to harbor any ill will towards Radahn. Even if he was not directly trying to thwart Ranni, they would still feel bitter and angered by his actions to conquer the stars. And even still, while Radahn glorified Godfrey and Radagon, he was still born, raised, and taught magic by the Academy and other places. If I had to take a wild stab, I'd say his actions were more in line with attempting to be like Godfrey before him, and conquer an area like the Lands Between. Even when talking to Jerren, he has some interesting lines: "Well, I haven't heard that name in an age. Then you must serve Princess Ranni? The next time you speak to Iji, tell him this: The festival of Radahn will surely set Ranni's fate into motion. By the by... Is that old fool still hammering out weapons? His enormous frame, cramped in that little place... Bit of a haughty sort. Strange fella, when I knew him. And funny thing, his swords were all blunt as stone. But not one of them decayed when faced with the scarlet rot... Go on, now. This old geezer hasn't any use for you just yet." and "Ah, well met. I hardly expected to see the champion of the festival here of all places. You didn't ... know Sellen did you? Well, whatever the case, she's dead now. Just put it behind you. She was known as the graven witch Obsessed by the primeval current, countless sorcerers fell to her hands. The most dangerous mage in the entire history of Raya Lucaria's Academy" He seems to not be against helping Ranni's fate, and if Radahn was so fervently against it, one would suspect he might be as well. Or at least he would show some conflict between giving Radahn a warriors death which would help someone he might stand against helping. His other quote also reveals that he seems to care for the Academy and it's on goings, and that Sellen is a graven witch, who should be put to death for the sake of the Academy. Just some food for thought, but you never can know what Radahn was ultimately thinking.

I don't think the heart brake alone was what broke Rennala, because Rennala was able to interact with Ranni ( I think it was mentioned in her dark moon spell), I believe what completely broke Rennala was what she knew was the death of Ranni, that would have been the catalyst for raya lucaria to rebel against the carian royal, that's why she is so consumed in rebirthing, maybe Ranni came back to set the trap or it was already in the rebirthing egg before Ranni enacted the night of the black knife plot, because I also do not believe Alecto and Tiche were captured by the golden order, instead by the combined forces of raya lucaria and carians then since the evergaol you find them is in RL and carian territory, and with the main figure head of that alliance gone and the Rennala further descent into rebirthing madness, the academy took this opportunity to become independent from the carian royals and rebelled

you should look into *Marika's goals for the Tarnished,* *Why Melina bringing death back to the Lands Between goes against those goals,* and *why Gideon the all Knowing will tell us prior to fighting him that "I commend your efforts but alas none shall take the throne. Marika has high hopes for us, that we might struggle for eternity"* I firmly believe that these 3 aforementioned topics play a huge part in the story of Elden Ring that lore creators haven't yet really touched on.

I think its kind of a stretch that Radahn lifted the two fingers into space as there's no real evidence of anything going up into space. everything comes down. Plus her two fingers and her physical doll body aren't really at the impact site which we definitively know the location of.

Screw going back in time. It's overly done, I wanna see the results of my decisions in future dlcs. May the knights and priests of Perfect Order reign forevermore!

About Ranni and Radahn I have a Theory that Ranni entered into the Night of Black Knives conspiracy having been told that Radahn was to be slain instead of or addition to Godwyn and that the Black Knife Assassins betrayed her over that point resulting in her fate being suspended for an age. And that is why Ranni seemingly imprisoned Alecto the leader of the Black Knife Assassins in the evergaol on the moonlight alter. As to why Alecto and the Black Knife assassins betrayed Ranni in regards to Radahn? I suspect they did so under the orders of Miquella. As we do see multiple Black knife assassins in his service guarding the seal to the Haligtree. If MIquella had resolved to establish his own order before the Night of Black knives it would make sense for him to have a hand in it and orchestrating the down fall of the Golden Order and sideline the one Empyrean with the potential to establish a rival order. This would also explain why Black Knife assassins attack Ranni's crew after she slays her 2 fingers and has become a viable threat to Miquella's order to be.

I don't think ranni met the snow witch in Liurnia tho. I think ranni must have gone on a quest to figure out how to escape the two fingers and likely met her in the consecrated snow field or snowy areas.

What still confuses meis that there is the Tower of Renna next to Rannis Tower. Which gives the question why is there a Tower for Renna when Renna is supposed or maybe the Witch and why is the Witch gone? And the Dark Moon at the end represents the Dark Moon that Bewitched her or lets say mesmerized her like the Full Moon her Mother. I cant say for sure if its a Gateway i assume nonetheless that she and the Tarnished went there since that was the Plan all along going far away for her Order. I would still like just tiny more Knowledge about The Snow Witch Mentor since she is the only one that Uses Magic without an Icon that Appears well and Primeval Magic which could mean that the Snow Witch is way more interesting

Just speculation here, but I believe renna is just a fake name to cover up ranni. I believe the snow witch’s real name is Chelona as in “Chelona’s rise.” My evidence is that all the frost spells say that she taught ranni to fear the dark moon, and what is the only location in the game where the dark moon is most visible? This specific wizard tower. Also this is where the dark moon spell is acquired, maybe ranni feared the dark moon so much she didn’t use the spell and it was locked inside of the the tower?

In Dark Souls 1, the dlc allowed us to travel back in time to pick a fight with the legendary knight Artorias. I’m genuinely curious about who’s ass we’re kicking in the dlc. Are there any heroes mentioned in the game that aren’t seen?

I think the snow witch set description can be confusing so you and others misinterpret that the doll was crafted in the likeness of Renna, the mentor. But you can't overlook that Renna is described as a "crone". According to a dictionary, that means "ugly old woman". So I would rephrase that "...the doll that houses Ranni's soul was modeled after Ranni" to avoid this confusion.

If rani's doll is modelled after the snow witch and Rani looks exactly like melana, wouldn't that mean melana is the snow witch?

I understand ur logic but I’m almost positive the Snowy Crone’s name is not Renna. She has the appearance of the crone that doesn’t mean she took the name. I’m certain Renna is a sister of Ranni, most likely dead and she just took her name. Why would the house of Caria build a whole rise for the crone? Sure Selivus has a rise but i don’t think that’s actually his i think the name was changed bc he works for Caria but it’s implied the crone doesn’t work for Caria and Ranni met her in secret so she wouldn’t have a rise named after her at all bc she was probably never at the manor to begin with. I have more reasoning but this comment is long af on a 7 month old video

Who the heck is Renna anyway? I always took it to be the name of the snow witch and maybe she shared a tower next to Ranni's. I love speculating!

Renna is probably one of Ranni's sisters, to assume she just "met her in the woods" instead of.. y'know, being family, seems a bit odd, so I don't think the snowy crone is Renna...
