Scientist and futurist Ben Herzl shared at the Beneficial AGI 2024 conference that AI research is experiencing exponential growth, with technology taking on human capabilities in a number of areas. Herzl highlights the potential for AI to evolve from narrow to general, creating an infrastructure capable of integrating diverse AI paradigms into a unified structure. The startup Figure, in collaboration with OpenAI, has revealed impressive achievements with its robot, which can already interact with people, describe their actions, hold real-time conversations and perform tasks autonomously. According to Brad Adcock, founder of Figure, the cameras embedded in Figure 01 send data to an advanced visual language model trained by OpenAI, enabling the robot to understand human speech and act dexterously. This breakthrough marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Figure and OpenAI, pointing toward the ultimate goal of developing an AI model that can manage the actions of billions of robots.

Ai's ability to detect important data hidden within vast data sets is the first place we are going to see it transform humanity starting with the tech we have right now, no need for AGI, no need for more powerful computers. Its pretty wild when you realise what being able to break down vast complexity into something our brains can comprehend is going to allow us to immediately progress in. Like manipulating our dna for example which I would bet money on is already happening at a level that would shock us.

The robots are awesome demonstration models but not mass production line models. I'm looking for a cheap general purpose mass produced humanoid robot doing ordinary labor as well as an ordinary human in an actual non-laboratory job setting.

@@SJ-cy3hp I’m sceptical about the shorter timelines (both for capacity and the time it will take companies to fund, plan and implement all this) but what I am really sceptical about is that anyone in power will ever permit money to go straight to individuals when they could use their power and influence to have the money flow through government make-work projects and bank lending programs to “stimulate” job creation while maintaining control and first dibs at all the “retraining and support” funding. We will become pets of the bureaucrats, both public and private. No UBI unless it is in name only. And what we get will never be enough to live on completely. We will always have to find something to slog at.

AI is a computer program. AI programs run on computers. Computers run on electricity with a ON/OFF switch. Turn the power switch to "OFF". The AI goes away. So what is the issue here?

Yes, exactly, embrace AI and capitalism shall die; literally, we will be forced to restructure our economic system around something other than labor, and people seem about ready for that anyway so what the hell lets do it. AI is a poison pill that gives short term gains to the companies who embrace, but starts a race to the end of anyone having any customers with money and thus market failure. Capital/labor ying yang must turn into something else, unless... the robots just provide for everyone's needs once some key unemployment level is hit.
