Artificial Intelligence Art Generators have faced a lot of criticism for their unauthorized use of countless works of art in their machine learning. However, there is a much more serious way that these AI art generators may be stealing from human artists. This is especially true of independent artists and art festival artists.
There's no doubt that AI art generators will be used in creative ways as time goes on. But, where does it make the transition from machine created art to human creativity?

As always another stellar video! The real fear is not that AI art shows up at the art shows, it is that AI art demonetize Art as a whole. If that happens, there will be no shows to go to.

Just today I received an email from Microsoft 365 selling...drum roll...AI generated content for your marketing. This is a CLEAR case of AI taking money away from artists who would have created this type of content for businesses in the past. I also want to comment on the idea that people will use this and misrepresent it as their own art. This happens today with jewelry makers using commercial dies, bought focal points, etc. and claiming the work as their own. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happens to others with the doors AI opens up. It's already happening in online markets.

Yup! I was going to touch on the topic of AI taking commercial art jobs from artists in this way. But in order to keep the video more concise, I stuck to talking mostly about fine artists because that’s mostly who watches these videos. You’re absolutely right that AI will take those creative jobs as well. This is one of the issues the Writers Guild of America is striking for right now. I’m not against AI, but I’d rather see it take soul crushing jobs away and free humans to create more instead of taking the creativity away. People misrepresent art in festivals in many mediums as we see with buy/sell also. It will for sure happen with AI.

AI is not art. It is made by a machine and does not show evidence of the hand that made it, for example brush strokes. It will be relegated to the category of reproductions which also are not art.

Unfortunately, this won’t stop people from trying to pass off AI generated images as their unique creations.

@@EvanReinheimer Diligence on the part of all artists. Call them out. That being said, If repros are allowed in shows usually they must be advertised as such. It should be the same with AI. They can argue that it is original but those who can discern the truth will opt for the made by the artist's hand works. That is the hope that keeps me painting and doing shows. BTW: on a separate note: if you are a STNG fan, there was an episode where childless people on a planet tried to seduce children into giving up on their families to stay with them. In one case they gave an instrument to the child and said," Just think about what you want to create and the "tool" will "help" you. Even then I thought, that's fair- NOT art!!.

The reality is that AI art is going to happen whether we want it to or not. Just like photography happened to painters decades ago. Most of today’s photos are also heavily edited with Photoshop - should a heavily edited photo be considered art? Most would consider that to be yes. At what point does a heavily edited photo become too fake to be considered real? At what point does photoshopping become similar to something AI creates, and how can one tell the difference? There will be people misrepresenting AI art as their own, and there may be entire “AI art booths” at shows in the future, maybe even an entire AI art festival. It’s going to happen. Whether people want to buy this AI art or not, and if AI art can make a certain theme of art (like yours is kite aerial photography), that I don’t know. I think we as artists, now, can use AI art as a tool for future art pieces we create/recreate ourselves. Maybe an artist wants to paint a school of fish circling the Jupiter lighthouse - they can have AI create a few versions of their imaginative school of fish, see which one looks best, and then paint something similar. Maybe you want to take a top-down photo from a kite of a bunch of pelicans sitting in the water, but you’re not sure where the pelicans should be in terms of rule of thirds (center? top right? top middle? bottom left? what looks best???). So you have AI create your image, decide that 3 pelicans look best in the bottom left if they’re facing the top right, and then you go out and recreate that image that AI has technically already made. Kinda like how you can ask AI to give you a few different recipes for a great grilled cheese sandwich. It’ll give you some a few variations and different cheeses for you to try, but it’s still up to you to make that grilled cheese.

Expertly put. I’m not “anti AI” or even “anti AI art.” But I am anti allowing fully AI created art in art festivals that require the artist to be in attendance. And of course anti misrepresentation of AI art being fully hand/human made. I was able to test a beta version of Adobe Firefly recently and that eventually will also have some useful tools for photographers in it. Although I feel like some of what they are calling AI in those tools is not AI and just better working algorithms, but the term AI is very sexy in marketing right now.

Couple things Humans actually do have the legal right to study from photographs, just not sell them if its not different enough, what makes something different enough is a case by case basis. Its illegal for these AI companies to use these data sets, because even though "techinically" the AI doesn't download and keep it it "remembers" it (very debatable), but the datasets are downloaded pretty much the same way google and facebook have been stealing private data for years and getting away with it. That's the illegal part, they are downloading everyone's work, which even for a human is technically illegal.

good video but most shows i know only allow a percentage of work in a booth to be prints, So you still need originals in your booth to display so unless you can afford a Swissqprint imapla printer at 250k I think this is just crying wolf

For people who adhere to the rules. As we know from things like buy/sell being passed off as handmade, not everyone follows the rules set by art shows.

Great video! Personally, things like this overwhelm me, so I like to pretend they don’t exist. 🫣 Keep on creating & trusting that the collector base I’ve developed will continue to want my artwork & that it will continue to grow. If all else fails, move off grid and start a farm. Idk 😂

“Keep making great art.” Is usually the answer to most problems.
