Another comment inspired by your videos and based on personal experience. Aikido principles work at their best when the attacker is *fully* committed. In other words when he engages is body *completely* towards his target. Such an aspect is deeply rooted within aikijutsu that was a set of techniques for the battlefields at the age of medieval warfare. Indeed, soldiers were wearing armours and without a fully committed attack it was impossible to neutralise the enemies. Moreover, all this "wrist grabbing" comes from the fact that the attacker wanted to prevent his target from using his sword. This historical aspect is usually overlooked and practitioners are left without a real insight into their training.

Its Aikido season for me right now, got your play lists saved, good you are all putting into all this work in addressing the most common types of attack Think with the knife defence you should address not just what is in this video, but all concievable situations, like say, sitting in a bus and some punk pulls out a blade Principles are more or less the same, (something you will strangely find is you don’t need to be standing up to deliver a Wing Chun punch with power)

"In real life just run like hell." Don't always have that option, man. If he's just a few feet away (under one meter) and lunges forward with intent to stab, it's too late to run, you know. You have to do something to counter it. Also just like in unarmed fighting where you have to accept that you're going to punched at some point, he's probably going to get at least one stab in. But the question is, are you going to let him continue doing it or are you going to stop it. Can't run in the situation we saw in the video

This is excellent! I am older, I've had Aikido and other martial arts but a long time ago. I am looking for ways to defeat larger, stronger attackers and this way WONDERFUL. It uses 'surprise' which isn't taught much. Very little strength is needed. Just going through the process without freezing and to keep moving using your body weight to keep opponent off balance and get that knife away.

When I trained in aikido I was fortunate to have a instructor who was also an expert in knife fighting. We were taught how to use a knife properly which gave us more understanding of how to defend against a knife attack. First thing you are going to get cut, no 2 ways about it, look forward to it, the way we trained was using a combination of knife fighting techniques with aikido techniques, which proved very effective. How I knew they was effective is on a Sunday morning we used to have fight club. Yeah how it sounds. Anyways someone would come at you with a fake knife for obvious reasons, with any attack they saw fit. Although the knives wasn't real they would still leave bruises. That's the only way you learn make it as real as possible. Also learnt how to deflect the knife back into the attacker.
@Epotheros
@Epotheros 4 жыл бұрын
Did he teach you that 90% of the time in a knife fight where the assailant knows what they are doing they will try and grapple you before stabbing? A big red flag for when someone is using a knife is when they hold their knife behind their body and lead with a free hand. No one who knows what they are doing with a knife will try to fight an unarmed opponent leading with their knife.

Hi Aikido flow team, thanks for sharing your thoughts and techniques. I am wondering whether you can shed some thoughts on traditional practice of defence against tanto, and how we should practice in order to link to modern fighting scenarios. You have already shown part of it here, but more explicitly when we practice our fundamental techniques, how do we keep in mind to link to practical situation? For example, Shionage against yokomen slash, we learn to blend and disarm the tanto. However, in street situation, there are different stages of timing, one being a bit later one where you might not be able to blend so well. So how do we look at movement and technique like shionage to modify to suit? Thank-you.

That's a good honest advice, above all don't be a hero. But if you have to defend yourself, you have to MOVE FAST and COMMITTED 100% in every strike. Practice simple moves and basic techniques, punch as hard as you can't and avoid fancy movie movements. Street fights ends up in few seconds, thieves and bullies don't want to spend time because the longer the fight the biggest chances they get beaten up. PRACTICE gives you speed, strength and confidence. Great videos! (Y)

Two schools of thought, one says look at the eyes to read the intent and to show no fear. The 2nd school of thought is more about watching the chest and shoulder for movement. I personally don't look at the eyes because mad or crazy people have scary eyes , best to watch the body.

I think this; because I can see Aikido, Wing Chun both are all about closing the distance, from a position of disadvantage; Tyson was a heavy weight, inch short of 6 ft, and practically all his heavy weight contemporaries towered over him, averaging 6ft 4ins, and with that extra reach and advantage over him, It is very similar to facing a weapon, Peekabo Style/Akd/WingC I think are brilliant together

+Aikidoflow With all due respect I have to say there is a 50/50 chance of this working. In most knife attacks the killer is not showing his weapon he is hiding it. What will it mostly look like is he will hide the knife in his pocket, slowly walks towards you, when he gets close he takes it out and starts stabbing you with speed. Or he will run towards you from the back or side and starts stabbing you. Watch Code red defense to see what I mean. I have nothing against you or any hate towards you. I am just saying this is not the best technique

Two palm heel strikes, or the low block with a trap …..this guy has experience , good advice, go all the way with whatever you start, and loosen up psychologically, find a way not to freeze up with the adrenaline pump…. I like the circular low block bringing the attackers arm to my left and apply a wrist out turn whichever variant, either break his arm or straight to an osotogari…swing it in a circle to the left, for the wrist out turn to throw or break the arm,or straight back raising his arm into a hard throw osoto variation… that’s our hapkido stuff….. practice, practice, practice so you can immediately adjust to any reaction, extra punch or whatever attacker might do, but yes, commit and follow thru…. I see so much in common between aikido and hapkido… not surprising since their origins are the same. Hapkido having evolved from Japan to Korea from a Korean taken slave by the Japanese during WW2..who then returned to Korea and renamed his aikijutsu hapkido, so he could teach and practice in Korea . Of course over time the aikijutsu was influenced and more strikes and kicks were introduced, resulting in modern hapkido. Similarly Aikdio evolved into a more flowing style it seems, and while there are those that say aikido is not relevant to self defense or combat I would say that they are just ignorant.

But all in all, one must advocate the best techniques when in comes to defending against a knife, and you videos are great, The initial defence you have is actually very similar to Krav Maga, except they go inside - You rush in/block/scoop/knee/elbow in one movement, but Krav Maga goes inside It does acknowledge it borrows from Wing Chun

I have learned a handful of disarming techniques over the short time I've Trained. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I live in the usa in Boston I am not in law enforcement but in the military, usually a American solider carries about 60-70 lbs. on his body weapon, magazines ect... can you be successful with a lot of this gear on if one was trying to deal with ahand to hand situation in battle field area sush as Iraqi ?? Also do you teach how to use improvised weapon in your school if there is a multiple person attack thx perry
@Aikidoflow
@Aikidoflow 9 жыл бұрын
Perry Sullivan Hi Perry, Thank you for your question. When carrying such heavy gear your movement will obviously be a bit slower however your arms are still free to react and disarm the opponent, I would suggest to use your weight to your advantage, if this is a static attack when someone is holding knife without stabbing disable his posture and arm with the knife and use your whole body to dislocate the arm. If the attacker is in stabbing motion disable the arm as soon as you can, elbow them in the face of use s neck strike. Alternatively use the end of your rifle to deflect the knife and attack into vulnerable areas. Yes aikido is a combat system developed on the battle field "when samurai lost his sword he had to be able to defend himself" and it has a part called Randori which is learning how to defend against multiple attackers. What kind of improvised weapons are you thinking about?Hope this helps, Ondrej

In most cases people freeze up ....little alone remember techniques. This could work if you practice enough were it becomes instinctual and must be calm under pressure but most of all sell it to your would be robber. I had 2 guns at one time.....1 to the head one to the ribs ....both with silencers duct taped to them. In the middle of a very long dark block. There was no way any of this stuff would have worked ....so I easily gave up my weeks pay....my leather jacket and my swollen pride ....but I live to type this event down to people. Give them what they want and walk out alive. You have to feel them out ....some folks will not care and attempt to finish you off. The guys that robbed me were gonna finish me off but with the grace of god .....a cop car was coming down the block ahead and they simply ran to their get away car. Me , I was shaking in my boots for I knew had it not been for them cops I could have been murdered and no one would know because of the silencers taped up.

That is very true that running is not guaranteed. The person might catch you; that's why it's important to know how to engage someone that has a knife, so that you can either disarm them and kill them or to stun them to give you ample time to escape.

Also cut to the forearms is better than a cut to the hand 😕 The Wing Chun Lau Sau places the forearms in danger, but you are intercepting the attack (could any number of things: knife, stick) plus it give wider coverage, AKD involves grasping the wrist - a tiny spot, it just won’t work for anyone but the quickest 🐍🦎🐙🦑

I've feel that empty hands against someone with a real knife, real intentions of harm are in most cases just going to be killed if they try any of these techniques. Might possibly work in a very very small percentage of situations but as a whole I believe most encounters will just end badly for the victim. From my novice prospective I believe these MIGHT work if you stun your attacker in some way. with an eye gouge or throat punch maybe a kick to the groin. But even then I'm not sure this will work..... Maybe it will but I highly doubt it. Although I do enjoy practicing disarms in the safety of my class with predetermined angles of attacks with a dull training knife.
@nuclearwaste2062

As a person who trains in knife fighting, you are absolutely right. Most martial arts dont use knives, so they have no idea how to defend against them. which is why all the disarms fail in knife sparring.

Sure. Empty hand versus knife is dangerous. Give them your wallet if they'll take it. (The video said that). Run if you can. But say if you can't? What about the knife attacks, for example, that have happened in Israel on buses? Clearly the attackers were looking to kill rather than rob and there was no where to run. It's situations like that where having some trained option is better than just standing there waiting to die.
@johndrake5467

Not sure what what "no one holds a k n u feel that way" is supposed to mean, but from my personal experience sometime knife attackers do come at you in the same way as shown in the video. Regardless, the only way to know whether it will work or not is to try it yourself. The first technique is solid. If someone is brandishing a knife at you like that (and that has happened to me) that technique will work. The second technique is good because the first thing you do is deflect and get out of the path of the knife. Even if you don't do the disarm you at least have the opportunity to run if that's what you want to do.

What do you mean the basics, Alex? Looks pretty basic to me. Not like he's trying to perform Shio-nage, or Kotegashi. I think it looks relatively simple and efficient. Now if I can just get my wife to practice with me. :d Thanks for another practical video, men. Hope I never have-ta use it.

@@joequillun7790 by basics i mean its to dangerous to try and take a weapon from someone who is not securely pinned to the ground; exactly a knife, there may be so alternative options with bigger weapons but i think it would be irresponsible to try it with smaller ones.

why doesn't aikido work in mma? is it because it needs a different environment or something?
@aronbruno327

+iain stewart Aikido it's not intended to perform well against another martial arts, its a self defense art so who trains it are not worried to win a fight against another martial artist, in fact engage a fight in the street is a very bad idea because you don't know if your opponent are armed or have friends also the longer the fight endures higher are the chances of you ending injuries, and i doubt a well trained martial artist will engage in a street fight so the majority of attacks you may receive in the street are from untrained people, of course you can apply aikido principles in mma but it's not the environment aikido was made for (sorry for the bad english).
@CogniVision
@CogniVision 8 жыл бұрын
because MMA requires taking out your opponent and getting them to submit. Aikido is simply for self defense, you're not going to go into a 5minute ass grabbing grapple match with them. You flip them on their ass, and get the hell away.

I think that if someone just wants to kill you they come up from behind. If you are confronted with a knife they want something or they're a bit thick. There is the element of your alertness. Aikido should teach you to be aware of what is going on around you, and to act without thinking about technique. The minute you perceive a threat, however nebulous you should be adjusting your distance, almost without conscious awareness. The minute the knife or any other threat appears, off line and strike or kick, then take the knife. Preferably escape, or grab anything which will give you reach as a weapon. Aikido is not a part time hobby, it is a way of life, so don't keep bad company, avoid getting drunk or stoned, especially in bad company. I shudder when I see some of these knife disarming techniques that rely on drills, one may practise in the Dojo, but knowing that the limitation to that practice is that in a real situation you will have to create the opening first since it is unlikely that the attacker is going to oblige you with a committed attack. The same is true of any attack and that is why O Sensei gave such importance to Atemi.

this may seem stupid to some but, I would like to know some techniques on how to apply handkuffs to someone I have just disabled and taken to the floor [the catch: they have the handkuffs (in their utility belt)] the reason being, I have seen many situations where a man is complying with police, with his hands on the car or in the air and the police start beating the crap out of the man: they beat him to the ground, taze him, and one of them end up shooting the man. before the police get the chance, I would like to know how to do a citizens arrest and place them in their handkuffs on the ground until backup arrives.

the first mistake is handing them the wallet drop the wallet or a hand full of bills and change and run like hell...don't be in the same place as the thing they want any longer than you have to be...why hand them the wallet and wait around to see what they want after they get the wallet...secondly you are betting a lot on a one time win or lose move in a big old flat well lit gym with a nice floor and lots of room, that works at the gym,,,i it not my way to plan and train for a stabbing in that kind of place, and get caught in a crowded dark bar try to catch the guys arm and throw him where there no room...the best advice I got was from a deputy who specialized in snatching a weapon during a talk...He said control the the weapon at all times.in the case of a knife attack, smacking his hand might miss and the knife is not controlled, if you can slap that arm with both hands you need to grab that arm and control the weapon. I am two fifty lbs and five ten..if you pulled a knife on me I will catch the arm at the shoulder and work down the arm or catch the wrist and turn my back and start pulling that hand and arm and you to something like the wall or a table and start beating the knife hand against some thing till it drops the knife...maybe just keep beating the hand against the wall to beak some bones.I don't have all the akido skills you have, why you are slapping the hand and wrist like a striker, when you got so many akido skills that could grab that wrist control the weapon and beak a bone with style..that sweep move with the sewing machine attack was a good thing but why did you not catch that hand?

Dear people at Aikidoflow, keep up the good work (I do enjoy it) but this video on knife attacks is kind of "dangerous" for the viewers.. I mean... First of all knives are usually hidden by the attacker until the very last second (personal experience as a victim and as a witness). Secondly, if the attacker decides to use the knife for real, he will strike repeatedly at a very fast pace. Moreover, if you manage to grab his hand he can use his free hand to take back his knife... IMHO, the first thing to master is avoiding to be grabbed. Indeed, if the attacker has a knife it will become extremely hard to escape without being stabbed.
