I always jot down this little guide when I teach someone a jazz piano lesson. I tell them to keep it within an arms reach of the piano at all times, because I know how often they will need to reference it. It will tell you which notes are cool to play over which chords, as well as all the ways to notate all of the chords.

Any diminished chord can be treated as any of four different 7♭9 chords, by picking one more note. That's why they're great for modulation as well.

This is tremendously useful; it is going over my piano. I wrote it down by hand instead of buying the pdf because I wanted to ingrain it better in my head, but I will donate to your site. Worth every penny. Thank you so much for what you do! I was classically trained and started learning to play jazz about a year ago (I knew nothing except how to follow sheet music). I am so glad to see how much I have learned because I can follow this video and understand it. I also realized that I have naturally discovered some of what you mentioned because they just make sense harmonically. So the journey continues.

Aimee! Aimee. You have removed a *lifelong* brain block for me in transitioning from growing up playing classical music to playing (and struggling, and just not making progress) in any other style. I watched this; hand-copied your instructions because that helps me learn; and have practiced constructing the chords using the method you describe and seriously, within two weeks it's like something clicked in my brain. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO and being a gifted teacher 🙇🏻‍♀🙇🏻‍♀🙇🏻‍♀Love love love!

Thank you once again Aimee! After years of getting the 2-5-1's pretty much set (and more recently getting those even better with your Swingin' Bebop Scales), finally went through this for your walk-thru of the Diminished, Half-Diminished & Augmented chords (along with reference to your supporting videos for those chords), and finally get a sense for how to approach those voicings. Much to practice/play, but this gives a really helpful (and comforting!) road map for the journey ahead with those chords--much appreciated!!!

Great video! I've been adding the 11(4) to the m7b5 chords recently, because 90% of the time that will be the next chord played anyway. I'll have to experiment with the 9's for that also. As a bass player, I've been stuck with only the four notes of the m7b5, so it helps spice it up a bit. I'll have to play around with those extra notes on diminished chords too, I only use the basic four right now.

Half diminished might be a “classical” theory term, as 7th chords are referred to in two parts, one describing the triad and the other describing the 7th. E.g. dominant 7th chords are “major minor 7ths,” minor 7ths are “minor minor 7ths”, a diminished 7th is a “doubly diminished 7th” and a half diminished is a “diminished minor 7th,” i.e. half diminished relative to the doubly diminished 7th.

I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and your enthusiasm for songs has been contagious. Some of your practice routines are still daunting for me, but this video in particular has been watched and rewatched. It's ridiculously helpful. Thank you again;

Hey Amy, I have always written up crib sheets like this for my students, also! One notation I would add to yours is under the DIMINISHED category. It's just as common to see Cdim or Cdim7. I prefer it, actually, for the same reason that I don't like using triangles for Major7 notation: When sketching out chords by hand, it's easy for triangles and circles to start looking like each other. Especially, when I'm in a hurry... A sloppy triangle can look like a circle and vice versa.

This is so interesting! At Berklee I’ve been taught that using chord symbols without the 7 (like C-) means that you explicitly don’t want the b7 in the chord, but as an experienced jazz player you see it differently! Same thing with the half-diminished and “triangle” symbols, they specifically exclude the 7. Would love to see a video about those small little idiosyncrasies in our music.

For me, triangle ALWAYS means maj7, and it would seem inefficient and redundant for there to be an extra symbol to mean non-7th major, when the note name by itself means that. Half diminished also... by definition, is a m7b5... the m7 is required... otherwise, it's just diminished, as you actually say while discussing them in the video. Minus meaning non-7th minor I'm a bit less vehement about. Disclaimer: not formally-educated (aside from many Aimee videos) and non-professional.

@coltranius
@coltranius 5 жыл бұрын
anne stein I’m a saxophonist, and my piano voicing is very weak. I separate them because of their functional difference, mainly that a ii7 or iim7b5 is “going” to the dominant (probably), and the i or i-maj7 is stable. Simply, the subdominant is based on the Dorian scale, with the 7th leading to the 3rd of the dominant, while the tonic minor more likely based on a melodic minor or harmonic minor scale. Perhaps @Aimee Nolte Music could weigh in on the voicing differences?

In my ear training class in college, the professor called “dominant” chords “major-minor,” because the third was major and the seventh was minor..I always thought “half-diminished” was a more classical way of referring to a minor 7-flat 5 chord, with the latter being a “jazzier” reference, but I’ve been wrong before, and probably will be again..by the way, I DID have sheet music for “The Entertainer” in my piano bench when I was in high school..LOL..ya see, “The Sting” had just come out….
