More talk about trigger control...are you serious? YES! because so many comments still call me out for poor trigger control, I decided to create another video explaining why trigger control from a cameras perspective...doesn't matter at all.
Links to other slow motion videos, pay close attention to the amount of recoil movement before and after the bullet exits the muzzle:

Thank you for the answer! Waiting for your next video from that serie about shooting. Hope you can one day show on a footage the wrong, and the right sight picture.😃 Thank you again for speding your time editing your videos to share with us.

mercom152 I recently went out to try and capture some parallax error footage for my current video I'm working on. Cameras like to autofocus out what I am trying to show. I need another day at the range to get what I want. Which will include some of what you are talking about.

G'Day Ryan, Another great series here. Watched yr Road to series till 3am this morning... you are spot on with your trigger control. I have been micro analysing mine to get my pistol and black powder flintlock shooting better. If the trigger is light and the pull in a straight line with the trigger mechanics the bullet has long gone before any part of our body can make any difference. Now shooting a flintlock with a comparatively much longer ignition time there is an issue but as the high speed videos show the reality is quite different to the perception. BTW didn't you know everyone's a bloody experts here on the Net - just ask em. :)

+mcmatrix58 LOL, Yes there are a ton of armchair experts who have plenty of time to browse the net and never really get out and do anything. I attempt to stop them in their tracks. But there is always something I forget to show or cover in the video, and then I spend too much time explaining the missed information. I must say its nice to hear someone agree with my perspective on the topic.

I shoot a precision .22lr and my group dispersion is now chalked up to 'trigger control'. You can see its significance on measured targets. The slightest inconsistency moves the point of impact. For me, at least 25% of the discipline necessary to be a competent precision shooter is trigger control. I don't load my own ammo. Try shooting marked targets at 800 yards. You will see how important trigger control is quickly. You are right about the follow through part.

I'm curious, with your .22LR precision rig are you shooting off a bench, bipod, prone? I've only shot lower quality rifles when it comes to that caliber, but my experience is that the ammo is the largest contributing factor to group size. I've read a bit about damping/balancing the barrel with weights. Way more effort than I am willing to put into such a small cartridge. I was mostly trying to stop the trolls with this video. proof is on the paper. I know I can still improve.

***** I use an Anschutz owned by the gun club. It is a single shot with a wooden stock. I'd call it medium quality. I don't expect to lay down some cash for a top end rifle for a while. I would have to win some competitions to justify that expenditure. We use CCI standard rounds. They are remarkably accurate for training. Top competitors use Eley. But, I am not there yet. There is a difference between shooting larger caliber rifles and .22s. The .22lr round is produced on an industrial scale. It's performance is highly uniform. In contrast, precision shooters for larger caliber rifles go to great lengths to hand load cartridges for their rifle. The rifle I use and my breathing are consistent. In the kneeling or standing position, I am quite stable. Trigger control will take a lot more time to master.

MrSottobanco Okay, sounds like you are shooting off hand then? Yes I can totally agree that trigger control is more important with off hand shooting. Mabey I need to cover that angle in a future video. I mostly shoot off bipods and sand bags, so the rifle is already steady and easy to control, thus trigger control is much less of an issue. Whats the distance you typically shoot? 50 meters? and what kind of groups are you getting with those "medium" quality rifles?

***** We play by ISSF rules. The target is at 12 meters. I can get 5 shots in a 3/4" group.

Thumbs up for another great vid! Mr, I have a question, what i must see trought the scope ( sight picture); A even shadow around reticle circle, or no shadow at all? I know that I cant see shadows like half moons on the sides, up or down the scope, but my concern is how much shadow i have too see moving my head straight behind the scope, back and forth. Thank you for spending ur time to post ur videos and answering my questions.

mercom152 You should see No shadow, or very slight shadow evenly all the way around the scope sight picture...centered. That said, If your scope has parallax correction, and you have dialed it in correctly, there should be no worry about where you place your eye or how much shadow you see. On the other hand, if you don't have parallax adjustment, then where you place your eye and how much shadow you see will be VERY important. Parallax error can be seen by moving your head/eye and the cross hairs will appear to float around the target. If parallax is removed, the cross hairs will move with the target. I tried to capture this effect with the camera once, But the auto-focus is difficult to work with, and tries to correct for the scope parallax error. The footage was bad. I need to try this again. Thanks for the reminder.

Follow through doesn't only affect what happens after the bullet has left the barrel. There's a reason follow through is important in almost every sport. In tennis, you are taught proper follow through, even though this happens AFTER the ball has already stopped contact with the racket. The reason follow through is important is because it dictates your movements BEFORE that contact time. Mentally and physically, you cannot separate follow through from the contact time. Same for rifle trigger control.

+Wes Rhodes I can't fault that logic. Funny thing, most people have spent far less time focusing on their trigger control than I have. I use my videos as a feedback loop so that I can improve my skills and try to correct problems. I challenge everyone to setup a high speed camera, focused on their trigger finger, and watch for themselves to see how they stack up. That will be the quickest way to end this debate all together. What you THINK you are doing with the trigger, and what ACTUALLY happens are two very different stories. And you won't know until you try it yourself. At the end of the day, the proof is on the target.

***** I agree with that. I don't see anything really wrong with your trigger control. However, I just disagree that since the follow-through happens after the bullet leaves that it doesn't matter.

***** by the way. I've watched your Road to precision series about three times all the way through. I hope you get back into f class some day. I also started with a Remington 5R. I think your barrel length and bullet choice were hurting you too much. Try a 27"+ with 185 berger hybrids. Use 2000-mr powder. I'm getting close to 2900fps with a .56 bc. A 175smk just can't compete with that.

Going back to Fclass will probably happen when my kids can enjoy it with me. Right now I think the minimum age limit is 12, so I have a few years to go.

I am still working on being a better shooter with the shit equipment I got. For me proper bi-pod loading seems to be my inconsistency. Has anyone noticed better groups shooting from the bench or prone?
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
My best groups come from very stable platforms with a bit of give...Like a solid Bench with sand bags. Prone with bipod will change groups, bipod on a bench will be different, but I haven't tested how much it changes.

mercom152 Part six (not started yet, but I have the footage) has some interesting video lined up showing my sight picture while shooting off-hand at 300 yards. lots of misses, very unstable. I'm not used to shooting from such an unbalanced position. This is where I want to work on my skills because they are lacking.
