Leaving My Comfort Zone : This video is about trying things that I don't usually do, like shooting off-hand while having a camera attached to the scope. Not very easy to say the least. If you have ideas of what topics you would like me to cover, leave them in the comments and I will try my best to fit them in as I go along.

Love your videos Ryan, the RTP series got me into bolt guns, and reloading. I would love to see some more F-class type shooting too, just watching you compete (even if not 100% to win but for experience), and narrating what your learning or taking away from each shoot. Also, maybe whip out that ol' varmint load you made a while back and make a prairie dog hunt video, good way to learn accuracy is tracking moving targets.

The gophers in those fields are exceptionally scarce. lucky if we can see two per year. And it seems "stocking" the field the way they do trout ponds is an "unpopular" opinion....

Cory Johnson I started recording our varmint hunting years ago. But after watching other KZfaqrs, I decided I wanted to steer clear of posting the footage. There is just too much controversy that surrounds varmint hunting. As Shaun said, we have cleaned out this shoot location, which has made the owner extremely happy...less broken legs on his cattle. No gophers means the coyotes are scarce as well. I don't think I have shot a live target in 2 years now, kinda sad.

Good things to try for marksmanship practice would be like long range hand gunning with an optic, air gunning at longer ranges, try trap and sporting clays, 17hmr or 22lr at longer ranges, or a fast twist 223 with heavy bullets shooting sage rats at distance.....

Great stuff. Just got into reloading myself. I'm using the lee classic loader. The kit you use a hammer with. My first set of rounds were just sub MOA (.800), with a factory savage. I don't use a gun rest to shoot. Just use my back pack for the front of the stock and my shoulder. Hoping to get a bit better at reloading. I'd love to see you shoot a comparison of your standard load with a batch of very minimally processed rounds, just wipe the cases clean, prime, charge and load. Throw the best charges you can with your lee beam scale and shoot! Well obviously trim and chamfer if needed too. Again, Great stuff!!!!

Ready. On target... 5 BANG. I suppose that is why the word for 5 is fife (although that would not have prevented this I dont think) in NATO. For those that dont want to look it up, "five" is pronounced fife in order to not be confused with fire. Similar to why "nine" is "niner" to not be confused with nein in german.

Might be interesting to compare that with shooting offhand utilizing the sling for extra stability. I'm sure the technique has a name, but I don't know what it is.

detectiveinspekta I would love to, but that can cost some big dollars. My problem is keeping these videos in a tight budget. I guess I can do a ballistic comparison video, which is mostly data analysis. But I like to follow up the theory talk with some actual range footage to show what is happening.

It's very tough to consistently hit a 12 inch target off-hand at 200 yards, much less at 392, especially with a camera in the way. Try losing the scope cam and use a stock mounted Go-Pro and a down range camera combination. Still very tough but, way better chance of hitting with that setup. Good luck

Hi Ryan, first I want to say that I really enjoyed your Road to Precision series. Well shot and edited with some great info explained very well. On to your latest video and interest in feed back. Do you have a rifle with iron sights that is capable of approx. 1 to 1 1/2 MOA and if so would you think about starting from the bench and working your way through prone, kneeling, sitting and offhand? Just a thought. btw I am a fellow Hoser over in Ontario. Cheers

I think an Enfield would be great. My personal goal is to develop a target and hunting load for 3 different calibers and then work on different shooting positions. Thought it would be interesting to see your take on positional shooting techniques.

You obviously like your long range shooting. Have you any thoughts on the 6.5 Creedmoor and how it compares to the .308 (or even the 300 WIN MAG)? when shooting at distances of say 800m-1000m?
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
Richard UK I can only comment on what I have shot. I have never tried the 6.5 Creedmoor. I have heard good things about it though. That said, My next rifle build will be a 6mmBR. I have done the research it, and really like what it can do. Better than .308 ballistics at 1/3 recoil and 2/3 cost. Sounds like a winner to me.
@richarduk679
@richarduk679 9 жыл бұрын
Yes I've heard good things about the 6mmBR. Designed for 300 yard bench rest and won many contests at 1000 yards (subject to wind). It's the performance in a full value wind that makes me wonder it the 6mmBR is a true long range round.
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
Richard UK To buck the wind you have to shoot heavy and fast, which means larger magnum type cartridges. Those get expensive fast. I am looking for something with similar or better ballistics to a .308, yet comes in a little easier on the pocket book. I think the 6mmBR will do just that. If I truly wanted to shoot extreme long range every day, I would be looking to a .338LM or similar. Most of my shooting happens between 100 and 700 yards. Like always, you need to find a cartridge that matches your shooting style. But you also need to choose something that you can feed. No point getting into something that has difficult to find components.
@richarduk679
@richarduk679 9 жыл бұрын
Point taken. But the 6.5s do seem to be readily available though. I for my part am looking for something that's still supersonic at 1000m. Which both the 6mmBR and all the 6.5mm are. But I guess for the accuracy purists out there it would have to be the 6mmBR or the 6mmPPC. No argument there.
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
Richard UK Well and as you pointed out the accuracy is there at 300 for sure. Its going to hurt a little more at range. Thus if you are going to focus and do the majority of your shooting at 1000+, then I would say go for the heavier projectile.

Perhaps something you could do is explore the practicality of using traditional ranging methods for landing accurate, ethical shots on game. What I mean is I see a lot of these new "BDC" style scopes and such saying you can range a hog or coyote based on the height of it's back etc. Is this actually useful compared to just eyeballing it, when you consider variation in animal size and how it will affect your calculation? Can you range a prairie dog at 600 meters to make a first round hit? Maybe this is a stupid idea for a video, but it's something I've been wondering, and maybe it will give you an idea for something similar but better to do a video on.
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
No not a bad idea, not sure if I will be able to do anything directly on that subject. BDC reticles are designed for one bullet type at some speed. You have to know what those data points are and make sure your ammo matches, otherwise your shots are going to miss. Before I planned to take an animal, I would confirm the BDC by shooting many shots at various range targets to make sure the trajectory matched the BDC. This is what builds confidence in your rifle/scope combination. Taking many simulated shots. You will quickly find the limits of your predictions and your equipment and be able to judge your max range for ethical shooting. I am currently doing this right now as I just finished a new load setup. Next few trips to the range will be to confirm zeros from ballistic charts so that I can build a new DOPE card.

In your road to accuracy videos and your aiming for accuracy videos I have never seen you address the runout of your cases nor the runout of your loaded rounds. It is my understanding both are critical to accuracy. I see you use a Lee press and dies. I believe you could easily find a much better press and dies that would tend to produce much straighter rounds. But with any press or dies, concentricity is a key factor in precise shooting and should be checked.

IMHO Ryan by doing this stuff you're wasting time and money , i mean , if you want go out there to do bang bang and have fun , that's all ok , i'm the first doing this , but if you want to get back in the F-Class and kick ass hard , you need to find a qualified long range shooting instructor of NRA ,get some courses to understand better ways to read wind , start with some DVDs like the one from Magpul Series , Todd Hoddnet figured there and explained a lot of useful things to manage Long Range , to understand better the wind go for the Thomas Haughland DVD from THLR.NO , it's a pretty good LR shooter and can correct minor mistakes that bring to big errors ,but then what you need is to start shooting with a good windcaller/instructor , i hope you won't get angry to me for my way of typing things...
@ryandpahl
@ryandpahl 9 жыл бұрын
No such thing as a wasted shot...unless its an accidental fire. Every shot you take can teach you something about what you / the rifle / the bullet is doing. One of the things I like about making the videos is that it gives me a chance to pick out my own mistakes, so that I can go back and correct them. The point of this video series is to look at more real life scenarios and get away from the competetive shooting. I won't be going back to F-class until my kids are teenagers and loose interest in me and my time. FYI, constructive criticism is always appreciated, and I get what your saying.
