This 30-Cal long-range bomber packs a punch and does so very effectively at distance. PRC stands for Precision Rifle Cartridge - and it lives up to its name. Optimized for heavy, high BC bullets, and featuring a big case for plenty of powder, this beauty has the gas to get it done.

The one thing that was forgotten in this talk is the twist rate from that factory. Faster twist spec vs other 30 cals is what makes it work better for the heavies. Also work noting, Lapua makes brass for this beast and the military is using the PRC to some extent.

I love the 300 Win mag but once I started reloading I switched to the PRC and haven’t looked back. Not having to deal with the belt is huge. Also the throat design of the PRC is really intelligently done. I’m told you can get the accuracy of a handloaded cartridge out of a factory round.

A year and a half ago, Matt at CRS Firearms was doing specific builds. For example, he built and load tested a .243 for AP rounds. He had already talked about hunting rifles. His favorite to hunt with is his SCAR heavy, which is, of course, 7.62X51 mm NATO. Compact, easy to use, and certainly fine for the dense forests of the public hunting land that he now uses in Wisconsin (the c stands for Coloma.) So, he wanted to build a sniper rifle, something that could possibly be used by military. He had choices from .308 W and up. Originally, he had chosen .300 WM because it has already been used, very effective, ammo everywhere, nearly as ubiquitous as .308 W. He could not find the action he wanted. But he was able to get a .300 PRC action. So, he built a .300 PRC with a carbon fiber wrapped barrel. He had accuracy and performance problems that were frustrating and I think he eventually worked them out. First two shots would be great. Third shot would wander way off, like the scope moved or something else like that. Problems you normally only have with, say, a Mossberg Patriot in the factory synthetic stock. I can say that because I have 3 Mossberg pieces and one of them is a Patriot that performs so much better in the MDT chassis I put it in. And at the end of the day, would he hunt with it? No, and not just because it is purpose built for something different and he is not a long range hunter. It is so much recoil and it is a heavy rifle. Ironically, his SCAR heavy is lighter. I am sure everyone here knows the heavy description just means it is .308 W and not .223 Rem. It could be used for longer range and bigger game hunting. And if I felt the need to hunt with something more powerful than my lovely .308 rifles, I would likely go with a .300 WSM, like Mark and not because he uses it, although he is the one to give me exposure and insight into it. (Sorry for the run-on sentence.) It is, to me, a fat .308 W. A medium action rifle that is less influenced by the wind and a short enough rifle to be truly portable. I also see it in action at Rogee Productions, where they hunt in public land in New Zealand and there is no getting within 100 yards of the skiddish ungulates there. Most shots are a few hundred yards. It reminds me of the state drawn lottery hunts in my state where you can hunt mule deer. The description of the hunt and the area is to expect snow and ice (high desert) and shots of at least 200 yards (high desert, not a lot of trees.) Pretty much all still hunting. Would I change to .300 PRC for a 200 yard hunt? No. The factory load that I have has energy good to about 500 yards. That is plenty good, especially for the dense forests I hunt. But intellectually, it is a worthy pursuit.

I am a .300 Win Mag guy and really, shot placement is the equalizer. Unless target shooting, 750-1000 yd shots on game animals are in the unethical range, much easier to be off a few inches and wound an animal instead of a clean kill. To each their own, the .300 PRC has its place with folks too.

I enjoy using and completely trust my Parker Hale #1200 - 300 Win Mag. Where I live, a 500 yard shot is extremely rare to maximum due to thick forest. The long shots are usually taken in forest cut-over areas. And at 60 years old, I cannot see myself cashing out for the latest product. I can also get ammo almost anywhere for the 300WM. I would enjoy trying the 300PRC though.

I appreciated you guys making a 338 win mag video. That was great. Would you guys consider talking about what your caliber of choice would be for a specific type of game species or a specific type of hunt? Something in the lines of what caliber/cartridge you guys would use, what kind of ammo etc. I think it would be an awesome video. For me I like the 223 for varmints predators 270 for medium to potentially large game and the 338 win mag to cover anything that plans to eat me here in North America. No need for big 5 African hunting for me.

The 300prc was best described from 3:00-3:30. The way that I describe my 300prc is it's a 300wm with all the chamber slop removed and a much longer neck to hold onto the long high BC bullets and not set them deep in the case. I'd say that the 300prc is 20% better than a 300wm today. When more factory ammo choices come to market I'd say that the 300prc would be 40% better than the 300wm. Thats not saying that the 300wm is a slouch or obsolete in any way. I love my model 70 in 300wm but my 300prc is more betterer 👍😉

Kind of mucho better, like todays Corvette against a 2002 Mustang GT. When all else fails, rather then be embarrassed re-barrel with a 7-mag and have a 7-300. While the 300PRC slings weights you will be shooting laser beams 😂.
@kirkmartin2223
@kirkmartin2223 Жыл бұрын
@@revolutionmarine5693 a "7-mag" or 7mm Remington magnum and 7-300prc are 2 totally different animals. So I don't understand what you are trying to say. Do you have an optic with a dial elevation turret? If so....the "lazer beams" of my youth are trumped by heavy high BC bullets.....unless you are shooting 400yds and closer. Set a 180gr or 197gr 7mm bullet in a 7mag and half the weight of those bullets will be sitting below the neck shoulder junction eating up case capacity. Same can be said for the 300wm vs 300prc comparison. The PRC cartridges hold long high BC bullets in the neck of the case.
@2S1L3NT
@2S1L3NT Жыл бұрын
20% is a stretch... But if you like it more, you like it more. But comparing the 2, the 300 wm can still do everything the 300 prc can. I load 225 ELDs in my 300 wm and my velocities are faster than my 300 prc with like for like loadings. I've not reached pressure signs with either, but they have different barrels and the PRC barrel is a 27 vs a 26 in WM so there are variances that factor enough to not compare them side by side in my case. If getting into one for the first time, having neither, I'd choose which has ammo available, and is cheaper to shoot. They're that similar. Some chambers can make the 300 wm a challenge with heavyweight bullets, and most will be single fed unless it came with CIP mag length from the factory, but it can be done.

Beautiful cartridge, new bullets, new powders make magnum cartridges, for hunting obsolete. Running staball behind a 212 in my 3006 at 2553 fps with a single digit SD and it shoots lights out, holding energy to take elk at any “ethical” range. Thge 250gr A-Tip is a much better long range bullet. I recently rechambered my 300PRC rifle to 30 Sherman Magnum which is a much better round shooting the Hornady 250gr A-Tip. Its running about 150 FPS faster than my 30PRC was with same bullet.And if I get in a jam I can still shoot 300 PRC ammo in my 30 Sherman Magnum.

Ryan's comment sums it up for me. "At present, there aren't any bullet offerings in the cartridge that I like". I agree. The ELD-X may be nice for long range specific applications, but is not a good performer at closer ranger higher velocity impacts, perhaps such as a bull moose at 75 yards, or a bull elk close in the timber. I don't deliberately choose long range shots. I like to be prepared for any opportunity within reason. Nosler Accubonds or Partitions generally perform well out to 600 yards, with adequate velocity to expand while having integrity for any close range shot as well. Much the same as Ryan states as his preferred limit of 600 yards for hunting, I feel I can cover anything from the muzzle to 600 better with other cartridge and bullet options. If the ELD-X could handle high impacts better, maybe that could change things, but a lot of hunters are reporting penetration issues with the ELD-X up close.

So how is 300 prc felt recoil vs 6.5 creedmoor? I know I never feel recoil while hunting but I also want be able to practice with my hunting rifle, and have had multiple shoulder surgeries so I'm definitely recoil sensitive, after multiple rounds fired.

Would love to hear what Ryan has to say about the 212 lrx for the 300. It's a "bore rider" bullet and idk what that means. But the B.C. is high and it's a tough looking game bullet

Curious on your thoughts on the 300PRC vs the 28 Nosler for a dedicated high county elk gun. Burning out barrels aside, do you prefer the speed of the 28N to the couple extra grains in the PRC? What about the 30Nosler va the 300 PRC? No competition shooting or target shooting with this build. Just a lights out, long range, light(ish) hunting rifle for elk and moose in grizzly country ( but not hunting bears specifically)

I used 195 Berger EOL out of my 28 Nos last season with success on elk… But I just love guns so much Im having a 300PRC built right now for elk this season. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, they are pretty damn close.

My range partner has a 300PRC, had he has created some awesome loads for this cartridge. The guy is a balistics geek! We were doing some radar on one of his loads shooting out to 430y. He said the balistic energy at 430y from that particular 300PRC round is similar energy to that of a 30-06 at point blank... To which I responded (in a breathy whisper) fuuckk?!?! Also.. you guys touched on a military application.. I could be completely wrong here, and some please correct me if I am... The 300PRC approaches energy and velocity of a 338 lapua; is that a fair statement or a bit of a stretch, generally speaking?

The 300PRC can also be thought of as smaller/faster as well. the 6mm and 6.5 offerings are smaller and faster for say 1000 yards but when you start talking 1mile or 2000 yards, this is the smaller/faster compared to say the 50BMG and 338 calibers and would have significantly cheaper and more comfortable to shoot.

Poop, hype job, expensive ammo. Funny Hornady makes the 6.5 PRC and Winchester comes out with the 6.8 Western which is the best short action with magnum numbers at 500 yards and the 6.8 Western is hitting harder at 500 yards by 17% then the 6.5 PRC. The numbers aren't much more then others they are trying to replace. My .300 wm shooting out of the Christensen MPR 26 inch barrel at 1:10 no fancy BS is beating the numbers of the .300 PRC except foot pounds with their heavir rounds but dude im not out hunting elephants

@@steffen707- They do kind of already make it it's just not called the PRC... Personally I love the 6.5mm family but I also love the 7mm family. I own 3 of the 7mm's and for the most part a 300 PRC necked down to 7mm wouldn't be much different if at all as a 28 Nosler If I'm hunting a big animal that's what I'm shooting. I've already shot 3 moose in Alaska with the 28 Nosler and an elk in Colorado it was like lightning hit them so it's definitely worth checking out if you do any hunting for stuff like that.

More facts - 300PRC is built off the 375 Ruger case, No belt, less magazine/feed/headspace issues Designed to seat heavy-for-caliber long bullets outside the case leaving more powder capacity than 300WM. Optimal case size for powder charges, keeping consistent powder column. 308 Norma case too large - inconsistent powder column stacking in uphill or downhill shooting scenarios. Enough ft/lbs at 1000yds to kill. Hornady was marketing it hard, keeping lots of brass out there... I studied and chose 300PRC. Very pleased with my Bergara HMR.
