If anyone thinks they look sad, they arent. This is the look of first weekers. Haircut is nothing. The travel there, first night experience, and culture shock has you feeling like nothing else ever could. Joining was the best thing i ever did! 321st Jan 1997! Makes you a man. You will go home after basic and tech school and your loser friends will still be living at home and smoking weed.

We didn't dare laugh at the time, but it was funny for everybody to have their head shaved. You're all in the same boat and it's much cooler and easier to take care of. It's part of the process of breaking down individualism and reforming into a team.

I went in 2004 and the old guy closest to the door cut my hair a few weeks into BMT. I remember him being a kind old guy. I had cuts where my ears attach to my head from the damn eyeglass straps pulling down on them and he noticed it and took the time to put some bacitracin on it. The haircuts are a 5 min chance to sit and do nothing - it’s wonderful!

The barber's name is Lester West. He had been cutting hair there since the late 60's. Sadly he has passed away.

My recruiter told me to not shave my head before basic training because they're still going to try to take some hair off. Apparently it's some sort of requirement for the barbers.

I remember that first cut like yesterday. They had someone there taking photos & I’m trying my best to look normal & hope she didn’t come to me. Naturally she got all in my face & I couldn’t help but smile like a goober. I wish I could find that book.

because if you cut your hair really short when you get there they'll still make you get a haircut even if it looks like that they'll say "Oh this is the most easy haircut."

No. They will cut your hair even if your bald. The reason is they charge you money for the cut. They take it straight from your paycheck so regardless how your hair is, your getting a haircut.

Some of those people cut my hair. They cut it three times at basic. Week 0. Week 3 and week 7. Do not cut your hair before. They will make you cut it anyways

Then you don't want to be in the military. They don't make exceptions in Basic Training lol. Once your out of basic you can grow it out a little on top but still has to have a tapered appearance and not touch your ears or collar.
