I was showing my son the Army Basic gas chamber scenario that I went through, and he decides to say, "Whew, I'm glad I'm going into the Air Force. They don't have to have that." Little did he know I was also in the Air Force for 4 years. So, I brought him here. His reply... "Oh..."

This was one of the best days at BMT. The gas reacts to moisture hence eyes, nasal passages, and throat/mouth. It happened to be around 105 that day in San Antonio, and the gas attacked the sweat on your neck and face after taking off the mask. Watching people try to run out and smack their faces on the door/door frame and wall. Good times.

Ah, the gas chamber. Besides the first meal in the DIFAC, and the obstacle course, and of course the graduation ceremonies, this was one of the most memorable times. That stuff SUCKS. You take off the mask and for like 1 second you feel like hot stuff standing there surrounded by an incapacitating agent and it only burns a bit (kinda like IcyHot). And then you inhale. And it feels like SATAN HIMSELF HAS DECIDED TO POKE AROUND IN YOUR LUNGS. There is much coughing and hacking and crying while you try to choke out a reporting statement, and then you're allowed to leave. It clears up within minutes of leaving but it's still painful. And fun. I'd totally do it again.

Oh, it'll be fine. You can still breathe, it'll just be very difficult. You'll be able to get enough oxygen, even if your lungs are burning. I think what makes it fun is just it being a new experience. Something interesting to look back on and laugh at. Also they feed you MREs so that was nice.

Chili mac is pretty good. Eeh, I think there are some vegetarians. There are enough food options in the DIFAC that you could do it, but you'll definitely be given iron supplements. But anyone can have a vegetarian MRE if they want, lol. I never got them because I heard they aren't as good, but they do exist. Get beef ravioli or beef stew if you can. Delicious~

It's not poisonous, or else they wouldn't be able to do this. It's just tear gas, and the exercise is to experience the effects first hand. It's really not that awful. Breathing it in hurts at first but goes away quickly. It's the eyes that sting longer, but in the end, you feel like you've had a really great cry once it wears off.

Lol air national guard is the air force. It's just the difference of Active, Guard, or Reserve
@Parahdoks929 жыл бұрын
You should look forward to it. It's actually a lot of fun. It sounds corny, but you're bonding with your "battlebuddies/wingmen" through pain. A lot of us sort of got closer because of this. You begin to understand you're not by yourself. It fucking sucks. It really fucking sucks, but it lasts a grand spanking total of 45 seconds to a minute after you walk out of the chamber. My advice: Blink as fast as you physically can, hold your arms out to the sides, and just breath in as best you can. Also, yes, AF Reserves and ANG both do training with Active Duty in both Basic Training and Tech School. To be honest, you won't even know if someone is AD, RES, or ANG unless they were to tell you. Deploying with Active Duty is a different story though haha. I'm not discriminating or anything, but in our PoV, you can tell if someone is RES or ANG during deployments, or if a reservist or guard cat gets attached to your unit for a hot minute (it's not a bad thing).

That gas was potent indeed, my week had two trainees, one male, one female, get emergency evacuated, because apparently they weren't quite fully honest about prior respiratory problems. This gas is no joke, you will not be able to see, breathe, or feel anything but pain for a few minutes. Do Not touch your face afterwards, the faster you walk, the faster the gas is removed from your skin. Do not hesitate to take your mask off either, or you will be sent to the back of the line with no mask.

Fun part about this was feeling the stinging sensation over all exposed skin as soon as they started the gas. At first, you just kinda feel a small sting from the last group. I thought “oh, won’t be that bad.” Then, they started the gas again. My skin felt like it was boiling. As soon as my mask came off, I had about a 2 second grace period before I went into a coughing fit. Couldn’t see, couldn’t talk, giant snotsickles. And for some strange reason, I’d do it again. It was so fun.

@Cusemanmike You're supposed to give your reporting statement and take a deep breath. The cadre will determine if you felt the affects of the gas enough before letting you out. I went through basic in jan 2010 and the gas chamber wasn't that bad. If you just blinked for a few seconds it all flushed out of your eyes and that's where it hurt the most. Some trainees freak out and clench their eyes so it hurts a lot more than it should.
