I was actually in the first CCT class in 1965 at Stewart AFB, TN. I was attached to the 1st Aerial Port Squadron at Lockbourne AFB at Columbus, Ohio. What we did back then is as different as night from day compared to what y’all do now. Much respect.

Even if there was 0 change to the mission and the job itself, the name change alone does alot for recruitment.

Sounds like SR refit makes sense and is attracting talent

This was really helpful, I joined up with the Airforce about a year out of highschool and honestly I was a pretty shit AGE mechanic, young and dumb. Now I'm older and a lot more experienced, wanting to get back in with a more "in the field" Airforce career choice and Special Reconnaissance sounds like exactly what I need, when I get back in there I'm gonna give it my all and then some.

Probably the best explanation by GL as to why the the AF needs SR to protect its own assets in the field in an austere/denied area. His mention about Army LRS/LRRP was classic airfield seizure!

This is amazing! Great podcast, I know I'm late to the comments here but, I have always had a love for military tactics and this is 100% what I envision when I think of recon and Intel. It should be more than a single scope job. You'd already be in the area so you might as well go the extra mile to provide more information for superiority. Thank you for this guy.

Here's my LRS/scout origins: my FIRST airfield seizure at Bragg, we land, assemble and make movement to the tree-line. Once there, we conduct a 5 mike SLLS (Stop, Look, Listen, and Smell). About 3 MINUTES later, and under NVGs, a BUSH right next to me gets up and moves carefully forward 50 meters. I freeze and don't realize if they are OPFOR or not. I don't say a thing! 30 seconds later, the bush COMES BACK and starts talking to ANOTHER bush! "Hey, are you coming?!?" And then that second bush got up and followed movement! My buddy close-by saw them and all I told him was "I want to be one of THOSE guys!".

I have a similar circumstance. I’m currently ATC in the Air Force active duty. I’ve been in 5 years and am 27 years old. I will separate this year or next depending on a few things. I’ve always been fascinated by the lifestyle of special operations, so I have been looking into cross training into one of those jobs in the reserves. I have a family and 2 kids so working for the FAA is very appealing. In order to be eligible though, I have to be age 30 or younger. Just worried I won’t be able to separate AND complete the pipeline in time before 30. I will say though I am impressed to see this man deciding to follow his heart instead of following the money. I’ll be separating soon and would like to join CCT/SR in the reserves if able, but feels like a long shot. Thanks for the vid.

When I was at 10th Mountain, they were trying to stand up Reconnaissance assets at the Battalion level at least with the Battalion that I supported. It was a lot of hearsay and to my knowledge it never came to be. Left there a year ago so it could be back now but doubt it.

It was mentioned or eluded to that the Air Force now has a "sniper qual'd " operator, so does that just mean every SR will have training emphasizing on long range weapons or will that be an actual selection process in itself. I would think not every operator going through the SR pipeline would be capable of a SOCOM sniper standard or what's perceived to be the standard amongst the sister services, curious how that will be implemented.

As a old vet of both Echo Company 51st Infantry (LRRP) and the Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment (now the Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Company one of the 4 US Tier 1 units) I cannot agree with you more about the US Army's horrible decision to go without organic Reconnaissance at all levels. It's very telling that 2 of the 4 Tier 1 units (RMMC and ISA) have a primary mission of Reconnaissance. I became a flying Warrant Officer (RV-1D Mohawks) and flew 8 years until the Mohawk program was downgraded. In the late 80s and 90s I was a electronics nerd, even putting the first Sony digital video camera that came out in 86 in one of my RC model aircraft and flying it over the maneuver box at CMTC Hoenfels 3 hours before 3/8 Cavalry entered their final Reconnaissance in Force exercise of their ARTEP. The Squadron CO told me to FO, so I took my video and a map to the FSO, who adjusted all of his preliminary TRPs. In the first 20 minutes of the exercise 85% of the OPFOR was eliminated. The was years before we started testing UAVs. I ended up in the S-2 at 7th SFG. But I was still a Nerd and still 90% dependent on the fundamentals I learned in a Scout platoon. Over 2 years I kept suggesting really odd and dorky ways of getting things done. I was the groups head Nerd. After 2 years of being known as the Strange guy in S-2, I was recruited by the Intelligence Support Activity, the premier Reconnaissance element of the United States. You can't volunteer for ISA, they find you. It sounds to me like the Intelligence Support Activity will be knocking on a few USAF Special Reconnaissance operators doors late at night in the future.

Still have no clue wtf SR actually does. Everything is so "hush hush" I have no idea. Am I gonna be driving somewhere to check the weather? Parachuting in to spy on people??? I still am so lost

Kinda in the same boat as MSgt there. Almost 6 years in the Army right now, attending Florida Institute of Technology for Aviation Management, and talking to the AF recruiters about getting that exception of policy letter to switch to Pararescue.

Having a year left on my contract & ready to bounce from the Army is all I look forward to. Then this SR shit somehow always comes up, catches my attention, & makes me consider going into it. Y'all need an extra B4? Lol.

Like GL said, the Army has dumped LRS at the division and corps level! Only cav 'scouts' and battalion 'scouts' (PLT). For a few years (mid 2000s) the Army made Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BfSB). They were tasked to provide SR to an Army Corps (like the 525th BfSB serviced the18th ABN Corps [82D; 101st; 10th Mountain]). They were a great creation, with a few mounted cav 'scouts' (not SR qualified) and 1 dismounted LRS troop (Special Ops qualified). Free-Fall, dive, fast-rope...all special operations (not special forces) capabilities for a 'conventional' Army unit. Of course, it didn't last! ! Not even 10 years later they were turned into expeditionary Intel Brigades WITHOUT ground troops. I will never understand WHY?!?

Any recommendations besides talking to a recruiter for active duty in another branch. Currently a Navy Corpsman that's awaiting orders to the Reconnaissance pipeline. AFSR looks quite intriguing.

SR is a joint doctrine task. The rename creates confusion. Kinda like if SEALs rebranded "Direct Action" or Rangers became the 75th "Counter Terrorism" régiment. Unless your unit/MOS is the only one really doing it (like CA/PO) SR as a name is kinda odd.

I have jumped from a plane 30 years ago.

Been an "older" guy,(30+), and "prior service" in a unit of young Servicemembers may seem to the younger ones as a handicap, they probably would call you "Grandpa" but YOU have the most important elements on your side and on the side of your unit, Experience, Military Bearing, Good Judgement, Resilience, Patience, Leadership, know-how and wisdom among other qualities. This will result in the younger guys looking up to you when things becomes hard and they can't seem to see the solution or they may want additional options,(like thinking out of the box). With time you make the transition to "loved Grandpa", "the wise old man", the kids will always want your opinion on their mission plans. The most important thing is to stay healthy and avoid injuries because been older than the others you need to be more cautious but is very important to mention that the peak in the life of a MAN is from 38-45 yrs and if YOU stay in good shape you'll give the young guys "a run for their money" and they'll RESPECT you after that, YOU don't need friends because WE are all family, it doesn't matter in what branch of the Armed Forces WE are. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE BROTHER!. SEMPER FI!.

I was a TACP ROMAD, and got out at the end Desert Storm. Then went to ERAU, and worked there in the Commercial Airline Pilot Training Program.

So I’m leaving next Tuesday for Air Force basic. If I’m already slotted for a certain job, can I go to my recruiter and change that? Like if I wanted to go Special operations instead of the job I picked.

If I were to enlist Air Force how would I get a chance to attempt to be Special recon, I’m 18 and considering all branches I was gonna talk to a army recruiter about an option 40 contract for rasp, but then I discovered Special recon for Air Force formerly known as sowt. SR is right up my alley I love everything about it, and I’m a skinny 18 year old with big ambitions 😂 i won’t give up easily I just need to shape up and push through anything that comes my way.
