Air Layering Hawthorn for Bonsai (June 2022)

In this video I will be air layering a hawthorn which was collected 2 years ago, it is too big for a bonsai so I will be adding 5 air layers to this tree and next year a further two. Then I will start to develop the trunk that is left into a bonsai ;)

Nice work, nice tree ! How do you manage air layering during winter time ? did you harverst them before winter ?

Thanks, i put them on June the 22nd and removed them in October

I have known someone get them in 8 weeks, but it all depends, the root ball will tell me when it's time to take it off, if there is a good root system going on I will take it off and just pot it up leaving the moss ball intact ;)

Thank you. I water when the moss feels dry roughly every couple weeks are more. I have a video on which I remove the layers 👍

Hi Ryan how did these air layers work out? I only ever tried 1 hawthorn air layer & that failed miserably

Fingers crossed. Question- I ve tried many many times and only just had field maple success…(16 months!) does it have to be bought sphagnum or can I use any bog moss I find?

Hi Ryan.. What success have you had airlayering beech.. Also when is best time to do it on beech may /June?

I have not done many beech Graham, but what I did do worked out well. The best time to do them is about mid May when the first flush of leaves has hardened off. I find this works best
