It seems to be catching on but slowly - I am not really into making safety gear mandatory though. There might be other equipment better suited for a particular rider and there so many other factors that influence a rider's safety - gear is just your last resort safety net if everything else failed 😉

Thanks Oliver for your offroading insights with the vest. From what I saw in the release sequence you did that little jump with round about 50km/h. I would say the vest worked pretty well for what it was designed for. At such a speed you (or a G-Force sensor) would not expect such impacts unless its a crash while street riding. In any case better one release more than one too less. Maybe in future these vests also get an offroad/enduro mode with different release settings. What about wearing a neck brace while offroading?
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree -the vest did exactly what is was supposed to do. I am surprised I got that far into the trip. I started to forget I even had it on. If I am in the enduro park I have a completly separate set of armor and a Leatt neckbrace. It allows me to wear a jersey when it gets hot like shown in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8mWg9tmzJa-g6s.html As I usally travel quite a bit when I go off-road touring I do not want to bring 2 sets of armor to keep the luggage light. Also, the neckbrace does not work with the jacket I have - should have thought of that before I bought it ;-)

Although the mechanical version can also fully inflate well below the 80ms. time, I just wonder the merits of electronic version for off-road rinding. Get offs like your West Alps trip, would almost certainly trigger the airbag. The mechanical version ( lanyard ) might be more practical. You would have to disconnect the lanyard in those sketchy hillclimbs or steep descents. In general it would seem the mechanical version of airbag would be more practical for off-roading. No battery to charge every night and zero change of false trigger. Using a field serviceable CO2 canister is the way to go. To me the subscription models / annual plan and non-field serviceable Argon canisters are nonstarter. Great video.
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes Жыл бұрын
Well, the lanyard is quite restrictive when moving on the bike - even if ridden just on pavement. You would have to set the length of the lanyard long enough that it would not be much of a hindrance but that literally increase the release time of the airbag vest. Having owned both - the mechanical and the electronic vest - I don't think the mechanical release is the way to go. The only real option at the moment is the in&motion airbag (yes, the one with the subscription option) that offers (at extra costs) an "adventure mode" - it is an electronic vest as well and the Adventure Mode will prevent the vest from inflating if you just fall of the bike near stand still (which is what happens to me most of the time). I have no real life experience with the vest so I ordered the Klim version of this vest for this year and I will give it a try. My biggest concern is that the Klim (in&motion) airbag could get too warm as it is worn under the Jacket and it creates another thermal layer and restricts airflow even when worn with a well ventilated Jacket like the Klim Badlands. I am sure I will do a video on how this vest will work once I have had enough time to test it. cheers, Oliver

Hey there. Are you going to get the new off road airbag west from Helite? They released it for public purchase a few days ago, but it's quite expensive. I love to see your thoughts and maybe later a review of it. I'm traveling with a helite 2 (wired version) and as I'm basically online on-road at the moment but plan to do some more adventure riding, in more or less the difficultly you do in your travel vids, I'm curious to know if it would be worth it?? 1150€ + 70€ per cartridge seems to be a bit out of touch. (compared to the wired version, which you can get for less then half of that and around ~20/25€ for a cartridge...) Greetings from southern Germany and save rides always

Interesting product and good to see that there is more progress in the airbag market especially with off-road tailored products. This seems to be just for off-road/ enduro riding. As my riding still has large proportions of road riding I may not be the best target group. I would be thrilled to test it out if Helite would send me one for testing but I don’t think I will be buying one this season - it’s not cheap I agree but it does have dual catridges as required by Dakar - the cartridge price is OK. In&Motion cartridges are more than 100 Euros 😉 the integrated hydration option is great 👍

I am used to the Helite with a string attached. I also have the Helite e-Turtle since a couple of days. Somehow I can’t be bothered to replace my old-school Helite with this new and fancy one. Somehow the one with the string gives me less of a headache- click it in and you are good to go. With the Helite e-Turtle so many question marks come up by just sitting on a kitchen chair with it. 😂 Fork Sensor battery Ok?, e-Turtle battery, ok or have to recharge? Both items paired properly and for ever? Will the algorithm really work and safe my life when things get tough? With the old school turtle you hear the click and you don‘t have to worry about any system failure. And if you go off-road riding, you detach it before and you should protected from an accidental deployment. But you might even leave it attached while riding off-road. What am I missing? 😅😊 I guess I will just put the whole bundle back on the market and stay with my Turtle 2

You need to move freely while riding off-road including switching from sitting to standing- you would have the tether so long that you extend the release time - also the tether will always be annoying. For off-road the only option is electronic- have a look at the In&Motion or Alpinestars vests as well. The only vest with a dedicated off-road mode is the in&motion vest for now. I just bought the Klim airbag vest with the in&motion technology to test for this season 😉

@@MotoVibes Thank you for your explanation. Based on your suggestion, I also looked at the Klim airbag. It looks quite good. With that one, you need to wear it inside a jacket. Based on your experience, which one is more comfortable to wear? Thanks you.

@@XYang2023 I have only tried on the KLIM vest under my KLIM Jacket and it is comfortable. I have not ridden it on the bike - especially not in hot weather or when I am riding challenging off-road conditions. I am also concerned about the additional layer of insulation and that it may get to hot. Even with an off-road mode the Helite vest would not be good for off-road riding in its current design. The "rear" of the airbag vest hits the back of the neck while riding for a long time in the standing position. I rode like for many days but it is slightly annoying. For onroad riding the Helite is still hard to beat but for a mix of off-road and onroad the KLIM airbag may be better - I will let you know once I have some riding experience with it ;-)

Oh no - sorry to hear that. Most important thing that you did not get hurt any worse - 2 broken ribs are bad enough! The Helite vest will provide some protection of the ribs - front and back. The sides are still open - so there is 100% coverage for every crash scenario but there are huge difference in the different airbag models that are on the market - no other airbag vest provides better protection than the Helite Turtle design.

As already said, In&Motion seems to have an “adventure” mode (the description talks about gravel roads, and excludes “hard enduro”… pretty slim distinction…). Not sure it wouldn’t inflate after a small jump. I have a tethered Helite Turtle 2, and it deployed once when falling with the bike at a stop. Guess the tethered version has the edge on enduro rides.
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 2 жыл бұрын
The good thing about Helite is the simple replacement of the cartridge after the airbag deployed. Especially on the tethered vest that is a very cheap replacement. As I am riding in the standing up position and I move around a lot the tethered vest is not that great (I had the tether before) for 2 reasons - first you need to set the tether really long which extense the the release time in the sitting down position (the tether is too long) and secondly even when set to very long it is still noticable. If Helite would provide different riding modes on this vest and improve the comfort for riding in the standing-up position this would be perfect for me - maybe add in the option for a hydration pack for good measure 😉

@@MotoVibes Nice to see this comment and give us the opportunity to give you more information 😉 The In&motion airbag system is fully autonomous (no tether, no sensor on the bike) so you don't have any issue when you're moving around the bike or you when you want to ride in the standing-up positiion 😊 We offer three detection mode : road, track and... off-road! This detection mode is based on our experience from the Dakar, where we provide the airbag system to 50 motorcycle riders since three years now. The settings of this detection mode differ from Street mode to adapt to “Off-road” type use with more vibrations, situations of limited grip, light jumps while integrating loss of balance at low speed not causing the need for inflation. Falls are part of the off-road practice. It is important to inflate when necessary and not to inflate on all falls (falling when stopped, loss of balance, etc.). The airbag is triggered if the fall requires inflation. And if you crash and the airbag deploys, don't worry, you can replace the canister (called Inflator) by yourself in 2 minutes, without any tool 😊 I see you're wearing a KLIM vest, don't hesitate to try the KLIM Ai-1 airbag, or its Rally version (with D3O chest protector, holomolated for Dakar Rally). You can wear this airbag under your vest, so you will no longer have comfort issues with your hydratation bag 😉 Hope to see a complete test of the In&motion technology on your channel soon ✌

@@MotoVibes Thanks for your insight . How did you attached it on the vest ?
@MotoVibes

I did not attach the hydration pack to the vest - its just like a backpack sitting on top of the vest - with a little slack so that it does not get in the way when the airbag deploys.

Ahahah I was wearing the tech air on a quite easy gravel road, I saw a small ramp… I jumped the bike and in the very moment I got air I thought “fucx me… the airbag! “… luckily did not deploy but I was ready when I landed “now it comes.. now it comes…” I decided that for the moment, no, even of easy gravel roads the airbag will stay off (the tech air needs to be sent Alpinestars for the not so nice cost of 150 euro to get the cartridge replaced)

Good to know others are testing the limits of their airbag vests too 😉 There is little to no information out there that would inform us how these airbags will do for "adventure riding" (light off-road with a heavy bike). I would assume Alpinestars airbag system is quite advanced too - I mean they supply the Dakar Rally with airbags - they should know what they are doing. It would be great to see them implement some sort of "self maintenance" in case the airbag deploys - having to send in an airbag for recharge seems like a unnessary hassle

@@MotoVibes yup, actually astars states it can be used for “light off-road” and in the instructions manual they clarify what they mean (this much downhill % slope, this tall steps and so on). As you said the testing they are doing at Dakar might actually, eventually provide them with a reliable enough software for us mere mortals too. As for the “self maintenance” I really do not get my hopes too high… is such a nice revenue for Astars and they can justify it under the name of safety and care… it doesn’t get any better than that (asking 150 euro to replace a 10 euro worth cartridge) 😉😅

@@scldma114 I guess you are right - good source of income but a huge inconvinience for the user - still better than the subscription model some use just to run the airbag - business practices like that are just beyond me.

Allzeit gute Fahrt 😉

Helite never meant for this vest to be used like this. The only vest right now that offers an „adventure“ mode for road conditions like this is the in&motion design which sold by Klim, Held and others.

I did not like anything that was jumped, it is more you could have had an accident if you were caught in another place that was more complicated to pilot. You've taken it well but it didn't do me any good. Salu2 of your most faithful infidel Pako

now I know what it feels like to have an unplanned release of the airbag vest. I did ride more off-road with it in Sardinia and Corsica but avoided any sudden upward motion 😉
