In this review video, I will be sharing my in-depth experiences with two top-notch motorcycle airbag vests: the KLIM AI-1 RALLY AIRBAG VEST and the HELITE e-turtle airbag vest. Having put them to the test extensively, I will delve into their features, performance, and overall value. Plus, I will specifically focus on how the KLIM AI-1 RALLY AIRBAG VEST measures up against one of the best airbag systems on the market. Given my shift towards more off-road riding, I'll also assess their off-road performance to help you make an informed choice when it comes to motorcycle safety gear.
Please note that I won't be doing an unboxing or listing every feature you can find in the marketing brochure. This video will concentrate on the real-world use of both of these airbag vests from an owner's perspective
I purchased my KLIM AI-1 RALLY AIRBAG VEST at the following store - Stephan the owner did an excellent job explaining the airbag vest and the rigth fit.

Thank you. I find your observations match my own. I'm currently reviewing many airbag vests available to the consumer. Helite e and tethered, their HMOOV backpack, the KLIM, the Held, the REV 'IT, the DAir, the Alpinestars TechAir 3 and 5. Here in the US, I've not found a brick-and-mortar store that carries more than one brand of airbag vest. The ability to compare these side by side, the charging process, deploying them, and the turnaround times for those that must be sent back to the maker is something that I feel most consumers want to know. I''m also testing the temp differences using a dermal thermometer. It's taking a long time, but I estimate my comparison will be done in early 2024. As of right now only Helite and the InMotion vests allow for the consumer to change the air canisters. Helite is the only product that does not have a limit on the number of times it can be deployed UNLESS the air bladder is damaged of course. InMotion (Held, REV'IT, KLIM) must be sent back in after 3 deployments.

This will be a very useful comparison - I don’t think there is a comprehensive comparison like that out there yet. Self servicing is important to me too that is why Helite and In&Motion have a big advantage - btw Helite does recommend to send the airbag for checking after 6 deployments. The good thing with In&Motion is that the replacement set includes a valve to self check air tightness of the airbag with a simple air pump after airbag has deployed and before a new cartridge gets installed.
@markkitaoka8783

Interesting about the six deployments. In communicating with Helite USA, I was told that an unlimited number of deployments can be done without the need for inspection. I do like that the InMotion vests can be inflated with a tire pump to test their ability to hold air. Both are so well thought out. I have both the tethered and e-version of the Helites, so when friends ask to feel/see how a vest is deployed, I'm able to show them the tethered version of deployment. I do this to simply educate others about the benefits of wearing an air vest. Broken bones and road rash are not fun, but a life-altering spinal or neck injury is in a whole different league. @@MotoVibes

@@markkitaoka8783 I also started with the tethered Helite which I gave to a friend after I bought the e-turtle vest. As of this year I am using the Klim airbag but I still have the Helite vest. Thank you for the review. This is a much better and honnest review on both the Helite and the Klim airbag system then a certain Canadian influencer put out some days ago. The RyanF9 video was full of wrong ore at least coloured information, leading so many new users towards old school tethered airbagsystems. He crushed the complete in&motion system, while this is one of the most advanced today. I recently asked Helite if they update the sold airbagsystems and how? The answer : Go to your distributor and ask if it needs to be updated.... In other words they don't. In&motion systems get updated automatically. I have an IXON vest since 2019 with the same system as in this Klim. I have the classic formula ( so no subscriptions). It has always been updated without paying an extra cost. The Alpinestars systems also get their updates, not automaticly, but still you can update it for free.

Thank you very much 😉 I love the F9 channel but I also think he is off on his airbag assessment. Helite has a second optional fork sensor to deal with low speed crashes and rear end crashes on their electronic airbags - a really good concept. I also like the idea of an airbag backpack which includes hydration. However- for adventure riders that leave the pavement none of the Helite products really work for me at this point. I was very hesitant about in&motion primarily due to subscription model. I am not a real fan of that but I used the Klim airbag all of last season including the challenging Transitalia Marathon off-road event. It got a little hot at times but overall I was happy to have it. It seems like we are seeing more airbag development progress lately- I am curious to see how the market will develop

@@MotoVibes It feels like Helite is behind in the algorytmes in their e-turtle system. So they use the extra fork sensor to deal with low speed crashes. In 2019 Low speed crashes and crashes at standstill were not covered by In&Motion either. The difference with Helite is , that they have a unique system in getting rider and crash information back from all users and developping and reuploading their algorythmes . They come from 70% and are now up to over 95% of ALL crash situations covered now. Last week I asked In&Motion the following question and I quote : Hi I am an In&Motion user ( IXON vest) from 2019 and I am pretty enthousiast about your system. I have a question that I don't seem to find an answer on your website, but that is actually aswered by Bennets Bike Social Test. I would like to have a confirmation. Bennets says that In&motion’s system covers front and rear collisions, high-sides, low-sides in road mode or low sides with tumbling in track mode, as well as impacts from a standstill. I have always been convinced that impact from a standstill was not covered? I thought a minimum speed of 20km/h was needed to deploy in case of a crash ? If impact from a standstill is also covered that would of course be a bonus. Can you please enlighten me? I got the following answer back : The airbag waistcoat is designed to be activated even when you are stationary. However, every fall or accident is different. We take many factors into account in our algorithm, such as speed, force, angle, etc... If your motorbike flies out of your hands at a red light, it's highly unlikely that the airbag will be triggered, because the bike will simply lie down and you won't be at risk. On the other hand, if you're stopped and someone crashes into you at high speed, the airbag will go off because the algorithm will have detected a speed and force high enough to trigger the airbag.

I purchased the tethered Helite vest a few years ago and had it deploy in a slow speed tip over, which probably saved me from injury. Within a few minutes I was able to install the spare CO2 canister I carried with me to have the vest useable again. I am not sure if the Klim has that ability. I purchased the electronic version of the Helite vest when it first became available last year here in the USA. The fork sensor was not available for sale then and I do not believe it is even now due to government regulations.
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 7 ай бұрын
The canister exchange ist just as easy on the Klim Airbag vest. The canister is a bit more expensive as compared to the canister of the electronic Helite vest - approx 60 vs 100 Euros. The Klim replacement kit has a special valve so you can check the airbag for damages after deployment- this valve adapter allows you to use a regular air pump to check if the airbag still holds air before you install a new cartridge. The extra price is likely due to the gas used. Klim uses argon vs CO2 on the Helite. The cartridge builds a bit smaller for that reason

After some research and comparisons, I bought the Klim Ai 1 Rally vest a year ago. I only do on-road touring these days, but I chose the Rally version because it flows more air. I took out the chest armor pads because they aren’t needed for road touring. My impressions: the default cost model is the purchase, which puts the price right in line with Helite and Alpinestars vests. I chose the subscription because of the lower entry cost and I can suspend it if I’m not riding. The vest is very stretchy and comfortable and I don’t notice it when I’m wearing it. I wear it every time I throw my leg over my bike. I wore it in 100F temps over an LD Comfort base layer and under my vented textile jacket and I didn’t feel that the vest made it worse in the heat, thanks to the base layer. Off-topic, but once I soaked the LD Comfort in water, wrung it out, and put the vest and jacket back on, I froze when I got back out on the highway! it lasted the rest of the afternoon and my skin stayed dry. It’s magic! In cold weather, it’s just another layer: heated liner as base layer, down hoodie, vest and the same jacket. Fiddling with the In n Motion setup was a hassle and took some learning. Battery life is excellent and it takes an hour or two to recharge. I read complaints about if you miss a subscription payment that the In n Motion will de-activate. Not so, at least after a month grace period and while you’re riding. I have my monthly $12 subscription auto-deducted. Other than that, I would tell these folks to either buy it outright or grow up, put your big boy panties on and be responsible for keeping up with your subscription.

I am really struggling with the choice. On the one hand, I am really pulled towards the Helite because it seems to offer more neck stabilization and hip coverage than any other on the market besides the Hitair maybe, which has worse deploy times. As your other video showed though, it can't really handle off road. As someone who would ride 90% road, do you think it makes more sense to go for the Helite and just disable it off-road, or take the negatives of the Klim for the software adaptability?

I totally understand the struggle - I bought the Klim airbag last year but still kept the Helite vest up until a month ago when I sold it. Even though I had the option to use any of the airbags I chose the Klim airbag for the versatility in switching modes. The biggest issue is higher temperatures but I rode the entire Transitalia Marathon off-road event with the Klim airbag and at 27 degrees C and above it was hot but I kept it on. We saw quite a few riders crash during this event and I was glad to wear an airbag and not just a neck brace 😉 - I hope this helps. Oliver.

Thank you very much- glad it was helpful. 😉 You could wear the Klim airbag vest with an enduro jersey- the „Rally“ version of the vest comes with D3O chest protection so this setup could replace your typical enduro chest and back protection as well as a neck brace. This is how this vest was worn by Dakar racers. Alpinestars makes a dedicated off-road race airbag for the Dakar but it’s not yet available for mere mortals yet. My understanding is that Helite also supplies airbags for the Dakar so I am hoping with all this that we will see more innovations and new products coming to the consumer market. For right now Klim/In&Motion is our only option 😉

@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 6 ай бұрын
Hi Alex. If you do plan to use the vest for off-road riding (adventure riding rather than hard enduro) I would strongly recommend against the tethered airbag vest. You will have to set the tether very long in order to ride in the standing position and it will still be in the way. I have tried that with my first Helite airbag which was the tethered version. This also means the tether is way too long for the seated position which means that it will take much longer for the vest to deploy when you do crash. The tether needs to be set to shortest length possible in order to get fast deployment. For adventure riding an electronic airbag is the only option in my experience. I did the entire Transitalia Marathon with the Klim airbag and the fit and comfort was much better than with the Helite vest. I did a video on my off-road experience with the electronic Helite vest if you haven’t seen it yet kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arVnq82YtMyngKM.htmlsi=HgcVbFFt2xHvrhBd At the moment Klim (or any other In&Motion airbag) is by far the best way to go because of the comfort and the off-road mode.

Let's see what the future holds! 🤷‍♂️

Der restliche Schutz ist nice to have.

Hi , may I add, that Alpinestars will give better protection on the collarbone, but they decided to not protect around the neck area as all others do. This can be seen if you have a good look at the alpinestars tech-air 5 . The more trackfocused tech-air 10 has a lot more protection, but again not around the neck. This is a well-considered decision of ALpinestars, but one that isn' necessary a clients choise.

@@MotoVibes I have no medical experience but I feel safer with the head and neck brace function too. ( Helite , In&motion etc....) ALpinestars on the other hand says : "uniquely covering rider's shoulders, chest,ribs and full back" If you look on their website, you can see a tech air vest blowing up. Shoulders and upperarms are well protected. Around the head nothing happens. They do that on purpose, because they do not want the helmet to get a thumb. In an interview ( I can't find now) I remember them saying, a humans neck is flexible and does not need this fixing. SO they focus extra on the side ribs and shoulders ( others don't) and of course the back and spine. They are the only brand that has this vision on protection of the upper body. Strange, but something to consider when making a personal choice.

I can assure you it takes a lot more than a pothole to trigger this vest. The Helite vest did exactly what it should have done. There was a pronounced motion upwards on the little „jump“ at moderate speed. Not something you experience even on the worst roads. The whole point of this exercise was to find out how far I could take this Helite airbag outside its intended use. I ended up riding with airbag in Sardinia and Corsica on more off-road tracks and made sure to avoid such motions.

I think the subscription option with In n Motion is a good idea. Much lower cost of entry, and after 3 years the cost is about the same as the Helite.

The subscribtion model and then pay even more for other modes seems very predatory to me. And its a absolute reason to not buy one. Imagina car manufacturers asking a subscribtion to use the airbag? Its pure insanity...

I don’t like it either - some car manufacturers do similar things now. You can upgrade your headlights via app and subscription- forgot which manufacturer- I think one of the German big brands. At least In&Motion offer a full purchase but the adventure mode is still an annual fee. I also think it’s a big deterrent for consumers. It was for me otherwise I would have looked at these vests much earlier

Im aware that several brands like Tesla, Mercedes, Audi, BMW are experimenting with subscribtion models on certain things like adaptive headlights and heated seats. And i am definetly not a fan of that either and i hope it will fail. But those arent safety features. An airbag however is, putting a subscribtion on that is in my eyes instantly a no buy. A company asking for subscribtions on airbags doesnt care about its customer only about the bottom line. It honestly makes me want to stay away from the brand entirely. (I know its not only Klim doing the sub model on airbag vests).@@MotoVibes

60€ per year through ADAC is not bad, and the initial cost of the vest is cheaper than Helite. You want something for nothing?

@@nikoscosmos that is what I got - 60 euros for the first year because I am a ADAC member 😉

The subscription includes constant upgrading of the algorithms based on deployments, which has some value.
