Jim got all the attention, but he was so fortunate to have Ray, Robbie, and John backing him. Those guys were beyond talented, and added originality, color, and layering with their darker jazz influences. The Doors ... magic

Man I just turned 18 and I’m enjoying this band as if I was 18 back in the late 60’s. The magic in the air must have really been something else if people could come together and create music that was so smooth, jazzy, bluesy, and psychedelic. RIP Jim and Ray.

My Morrison encounter: I'm 13 years old in 1966, at the San Jose Civic Center, hanging out near the freight door adjacent to the backstage exit door, Morrison sees me and waves me up to where he was standing, I pointed to myself and mouthed "who me?" He says, "yeah you, there's nobody else there, c'mere kid" I was blown away but I tried to be cool, I walked over nervously and loudly said "wow, hi Jim" I guess I seemed a bit too excited because he said, "why are you hanging out here, what do you hope is going to happen by meeting me?" I was completely, totally at a loss to answer him so I just shrugged and started walking away, he grabs my coat collar, smiles and says, "hey, I might learn something from you, don't leave kid!" I nervously replied "I'm 13, and your Jim Morrison, what can you learn from me?" He said, "yeah, you're probably right, but I feel like talking, he became more friendly and asked "what's your name, what grade are you in, are you a good student?" I replied " I'm Dennis, I'm in 8th grade and I'm just an average student I guess, but I'm a good baseball player." He cracked up and said, "Dennis you probably won't make a life out of playing baseball, you might, it happens but always try to learn everything you can in school, study hard and learn, just try to learn" With that, Jim grabbed my shoulder and led me in through the backstage exit door with him, he smiled and pointed to an empty folding chair and said, "nice talking with you, stay back here and enjoy the show Dennis, we're starting now..... Nothing spectacular, but that's exactly the way it happened, the show was amazing, I left without Jim ever looking back at me, and we didn't speak again.....

I wasn't on the west coast but i got to see the DOORS 5 times in my life. The music changed me forever. Tears running down my cheeks remembering. It was a great time in history.

John Densmore is one of the most underrated drummers of the 60's. I'm always amazed how he was able to keep the band on course when Jim was off on some incredible and unexpected tangent reciting poetry or something.

Watching Van Morrison and Jim Morrison sing together would have been absolutely amazing I wish someone had filmed it.

I think we are really fortunate that so many Doors performances were recorded so we can enjoy them after almost 50 years. That's one thing that unites us here, this great music.

I'm younger...but, it had to have been SO freaking cool to grow-up in the 1950's, 60's and 70's!!! It seemed to be a magical time in this country!!! My generation now listens to complete SHIT hip-hop music and stares at their cell phones 24/7!!

The Doors were truly ahead of the curve. So much so that their music is timeless and still relevant even 50 years later. Truly one of my favorite bands of all time.

I was born in 1962. God saved my life by not letting me be legal (or illegal) age when The Doors hit the music scene. I would have followed them anywhere. I hope Jim found peace on the other side. I remember as a kid, we were hanging out front of the whiskey and listening to Jim Morrison singing. It was amazing. We tried to get in but they wouldn’t let us get past the doors. We used to walk the strip almost every week. And one of our stops was the whiskey. I am 70 now, it seems so long ago. Was good times back then

Ray always had great stories about his experiences with the Doors, and he liked to share them. I'm too young to have ever seen the Doors, but I got to see Ray and Robbie with the Doors of the 21st Century in Pomona in 2004, along with Ian Astbury, who is one of my favorite singers. What a great show. Unforgettable. The Doors are timeless, and their music still sounds great today.

What can I say. As a kid in high school obsessed with the band and Jim Morrison in particular, I thought I saw and heard EVERYTHING, whether it was bootlegs, demos, outtakes, rare tracks, live stuff, video, pictures, etc. I can honestly say that about 90% of what this short piece consisted of were things I hadn't seen or heard. If I could pick on concert to go back in time to see, I would pick the 2nd set The Doors played when Jim finally finished "The End".

Morrison was one of a find. He was high on LSD, yet able to recall the lyrics he had not used before for the End. This is one of the best "Light My Fire" and I had not heard it before. Thanks for posting.

I saw a great T-shirt a few months ago, it said 'I may be old but at least I've seen all the cool bands'. That surely sums up being between 15-25 when all this great 60's music was made. I have seen many bands from this era but only when they are at the veteran stage, The Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, CSN, Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band. I was born in 1965 but would not have minded being born 20 years earlier. I work with a woman who was born in 1950 and she said that you could go out on the town most nights and there would be at least one great band to see. These days you wait ages for tours and then get charged £50-80 for the privilege of doing so.

2007 I was in LA w my girl... walking into the Whiskey I could smell the thick vibes...feel the ghosts....hear the music in the air... not the music they were playing on the system... but the music that changed my life... the dreams made and broken.... The Doors... THE DOORS BABY!!!! My girl ended up puking outside on the stairs ...was a wonderful experience...

In 1966, I'd graduated, got a job, got my own rented side of a duplex with a yard, became a hippie, and listened to San Jose's best FM radio. Nearly half of their playlist was becoming the 'San Francisco Sound', which inspired more locals to form bands. All Rock-and-Roll on FM was great in those sunny California days! Then, I heard this strange, wonderful song 'Light My Fire'; they played the *long* version! I was entranced! After that, Doors' songs were charting, and their music was almost hypnotic. Perhaps that Saturday morning bowl of Acapulco Gold helped! All I had to do was light my fire!

This had to be one of the best live Doors performances I've ever heard! It sounds like they invented hardcore punk/speed metal during the "Light My Fire" organ/guitar solo instrumental section!

Why does Ray's keyboard sound like summer to me ? It just makes me think of summertime... I hear that organ & I get images of heat rising from a roadway from a distance. The same way that Ian Anderson's flute sounds like fall/autumn to me.... Images of colorful leaves fluttering & spinning to the ground.

Whoa, my mind is blown. Thanks for the great memories. I have been inside here many times and got to see Ray Mansarek and met Danny Sugarman. Many great nights were spent on the strip back in the 80's. My final night became July 3rd 93 when i saw Arthur Lee @ Love with the Doors tribute band Wild Child. Those were some far out times. However like most all good things, it all came crashing down on Jan 17 1994 when i was in the biggest quake in Southern California and it threw me over here to a different planet. Thank God i have the music and memories.

This is great. I just visited the Whiskey for the first time, and I can tell you the magic is still there. The place is actually smaller than you might think, compared to the legendary images we've scene for decades. It looks like they haven't changed it or commercialized it in too many ways since those days--they certainly could, considering its historical significance. up and coming bands still play there, like always. I went out to the back, where in the doors movie they kicked them out of the club and Morrison started climbing the fence as paul rothchild says "come down from there, Jim, let's go make an album". I smoked part of my joint right there, then went in an enjoyed that night's show. had a great time! this mini-documentary is very well done! it's interspersed with some choice historical images, of the place where all the stars went to mingle, dance and "get it on!"

God what a time to be alive!

The closest I ever came to LA was Vegas in 2010,but I was 15 in 1966 and I loved the music and still do. I would have loved to be even just a fly on the wall at the Whiskey in those days.

Back in '72 I was in the Marines stationed in Santa Ana. A friend and I would hitchhike to LA, visit the strip, sleep in the Greyhound Bus Station and thumb back the next day. At 17, too young to get into the Whiskey, but good times never-the-less!!

Once again we are reminded that The Doors were never just about Morrison. Without Robbie, John, and Ray, it never would have worked. They were a BAND, four equal parts. You watch and listen to the live stuff, and they are so in sync. No one has ever sounded like them.

I loved Ray like an uncle or grandfather , that told the stories of his life with such detail. I would chew some LSD and sit there just listening to Ray talk. Jim was the poet, but Ray was a gifted story teller --- and the best damn keyboard player ever.

Incredible video! You could drive all over the USA back in those days and see amazing live house bands everywhere, but there was not enough room at the top for all of them to have their day in the sun nationally and internationally. It was a great time to be alive.

I’ve been listening to alot of 60’s- 70’s music again as I grew up in that time - just a few years too early though to be able to experience the doors or other bands at a concert though. But Jim’s voice and the band’s music really stands above most of the others listening to the music of that time now. And it is definitely levels above the music of today. I hope we have time travel before I die because I will book the first ticket to The Doors.

Great time for great music. I am 70 and remember some of the bands and solo musicians I was lucky to hear in relatively small venues for very little money.

I was raised and lived around the corner from the whisky, and saw a lot of bands preforming at that time and consider myself lucky to have been there at that time, I even saw you guys, I'm 65 now but what marvelous time to grow up and will never forget.

Those were great days and part of my life’s soundtrack. I will never forget the sights, sounds, smells, drugs and waves.😎👍🏻✌️🤟🏻

I got to hear the Doors early '67 and they were so clean I couldn't believe it. And Morrison was totally mad. Scary.

The musical performance here is outstanding, best I ever heard from the Doors which is saying something. A quality recording from the earlier London Fog days came out three years ago and I'm hoping there is more from the Whisky days like this. Fingers crossed....

I have been to Jim's grave in Paris and to the street where he lived but to be able to get across the pond and visit the whisky a go go would a dream come true. The Cavern in Liverpool and the Whisky in California are probably the two most iconic venues in musical history.

I absolutely cannot believe what I just heard...a live version of "Light My Fire" from the Whisky before the whole world discovered The Doors. I was 12 years-old in the summer of 1967 when I heard the first Doors album, along with "Are You Experienced", "Surrealistic Pillow" and of course "Sgt. Peppers...", started smokin weed with my little brother Nicky in our friends Tim and Ty Power's garage ( they had the cool parents who didn't care!!), and changed my life forever...talk about an awakening!!! hahaha...still rockin, lots of e these days hehe

I've been at the Whisky last summer.. My first night in L.A. and it was magic. There were Judas Priest playing.. it was magic atmosphere..

First time I ever heard that Van and Jim Morrison sang together. I'm kind of glad there is no tape of that as in my mind it is the greatest thing ever!

I was about 18 at this time I was too young for the Whiskey you had to be 21 to get in. But the Sunset Strip was insane So many clubs with what would be superstar bands and 2-3 bucks cover there will never be a time like that again. This is a great collage I just wish there were more videos of that time to relive.

I was raised in LA in the 50s and 60s and in 66 I saw the Byrds and Love at the Whiskey. We kids would run up to Hollywood on a Friday or Saturday night and cruise The Strip. One night we were considering going to the Whiskey, but decided not to because it was rumored that a really weird band was playing there, and we left. It was the Doors we missed. Damn!

John Densmore was a tremendous interpretive drummer, having to make sense of the chaos going on around him.

The Whiskey was a great venue. I was 13 in 69 so I missed the 60’s. My first time at the Whiskey was 76. I saw Blondie and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were opening act. I don’t think either had an album out yet.

Down from Berkeley for a few days, a friend proposed we check out a band at the Whisky. Why not? It happened that the Doors were performing. There was no mistaking greatness. We went back for a second helping the next night. Unforgettable.
