I build the new mould Airfix Buccaneer and discover it's a very enjoyable kit to put together. In the video I show a few things to watch out for and how well moulded and nicely fitting the new kit from Airfix really is. The final paint job with aftermarket decals will be shown in a following video.

Thanks for this video Harry. Because of the lockdown I've just got into modelling and have spent a fortune buying what I thought I needed (including this kit) - airbrush, compressor, paints, oh so many paints, cleaning pot, model stand etc. But you showed somethings that I need that my wife will not kill me over, costing only a few pounds - elastic bands and clothespegs! Your videos are so very useful (and interesting) for a novice like me, so thank you.

That looks like a lovely kit. Great way of presenting it. The lights on the wing tips are small, and when I say small, even on the real aircraft, they are small, so I don't think even with your brilliant skill, not worth the hassle. Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Hi Harry, you did a great job, I was ground crew on Buccs in the 70s and early 80s we had the Navy Buccs stationed at Honington, a few extra tips, Seat straps were part of the Flight Suit, Wing tip, aft position lights Blue when lit. wheel wells and gear were a kind of duck egg blue, the flaps sagged when no Hydraulic power was supplied so the position should only be up when powered, the back end was always sooty, unless after a friday afternoon wash before we could go home.

18:30 - I always use bay doors for masking, including wheel wells (handy that some kits give separate one-piece closed doors for wheels-up builds) - And if they won't friction fit I use a piece of blu-tack (or white), leave it a little proud, then when you squash it down with the door it sticks and holds it in place. Oh - and I just renewed my Airfix club membership, and traded in a bunch of flying hours for the Buccaneer kit - That's why I'm watching review and build videos right now.

Fantastic job Harry, Can't wait to see it finished. I think airfix realesed a 1/48 scale buccaneer in the early 1990s? And don't think they have reboxed it since? best wishes.Phil.
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 4 жыл бұрын
Airfix did make a 1:48 kit back then but it’s chalk and cheese compared to the quality and fit of this new one. They brought out a 1:72 Blenheim then months later released and up scale 1:48 kit last year. I reviewed that one. Since they now design with CAD it’s not too hard to scale up and add detail for bigger moulds. Cross fingers for a 1:48 Buck soon.

@@HarryHoudiniModels Correction, my father used to work on Buccaneers when the Royal Air Force had them as the MK.2B version for the RAFs Maritime Strike requirement. He was with 12 Sqn based at RAF Honington, Englad along with 208Sqn before they moved to RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland. The RAF Buccaneers were the Mk.2C variants taken from the Royal Navy and were modified with Bomb Bay door fuel tanks to extend the range so the belly looks bigger. So if there is an additional more ballooned shaped bomb bay door in the kit not mentioned in the instructions, Id say you can do an RAF Bucc but no doubt Airfix will re-release the kit as a Mk.2B with RAF markings. The RAF did retain the tail hooks as they were handy for field arrested landings for instance if a tire blew or brake failure. Another modification was that the wing fold hinge access panels on both top and bottom of the wings were removed by ground engineers as they actually became more labour intensive during RAF service as they weren't used so often as they needed to be inspected more often to ensure they would still work. Of course the wing fold was used even on land 1 to maximise hangar space and flightline space and 2 just to keep the system operating. Hope this helps.
@HarryHoudiniModels
@HarryHoudiniModels 4 жыл бұрын
Good to know.. thanks.. strange how they kept the tail hook?
@Zone5Aviation
@Zone5Aviation 4 жыл бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels Actually a lot of land based aircraft, mainly fighters, have a tail hook of some description but are only used for emergency landings and they are not anywhere near as robust as those fitted to Naval aircraft as the stopping distances aren't as short for land based jets. F-16s, F-15s, Tornados, Jaguars, Rafale, Mirage etc all have lightweight tailhooks to engage cables located at the ends of runways which are operated on a drum and pulley system to disipate the energy from the jet. So it made more sense to retain the hook on the Buccaneer for land ops than to remove it and have to redesign a new one anyway. Carrier based arresting equipment is more robust and is adjusted according to the weight of the aircraft about to land on the deck. For example the weight of a French Navy Rafale is a lot lighter than that of a US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet therefore the arresting cables would be weighted/calibrated for the weight of either based on the amount pressure stored in the pistons used to slow the rate of deceleration. Of course the alternative to a cable arrested landing is flying into a rigged barricade but that's a last resort if the hook is disabled or the crew are injured as it damages the aircraft causing millions of dollars of damage.

Hi Harry, I love watching your videos but can I put in a plea? Please, consider removing all the background music, particularly that over the narrative. I can't be the only one who finds it a huge distraction since it fights the narrative, the whole point of the video in the first place. I've had to stop watching hundreds of otherwise informative videos because of it. Thanks :-)

I usually do a cold voice over the video for the most part, with only music for the speeded up time lapses or the hero shots at the end. This one was an experiment with a background tune. I may not do it again.

Some of the old Airfix moulds are getting pretty dreadful and the engineering is very outdated, even though they rebox them in the new Red Boxes so they look like new kits. Airfix was taken to task about this and has started adding a mould date / release date to boxes now. I would always check on Scalemates to see if it's really an old 50's or 60's kit in a new box before buying. scalemates.com

That's an old kit, the one Harry is building is brand new. The revell mosquito is just as old and just as bad but for some reason people only knock airfix for re releasing old kits when they all do it. If you insist on buying kits without using Google first you will be disappointed sometimes regardless of who you buy the kit from.

You’ll be pleased to hear Airfix just announced a brand new mould Vulcan yesterday. Which going by the quality of their new kits, like the Buccaneer, should be excellent. It is sad they sell the very old mould kits in new boxes, which can be disappointing if you don’t do your research before buying. But if you still want a Vulcan, watch out for Airfix’s release date of the new kit.
