That's a great looking catalogue! I haven't bought one in many, many years, but when I was a youngster back in the late 1960s/early '70s, I used to love them, and spent hours poring over all the details - often only to be disappointed when the kits came out!! 😂 Unlike today, when their kits are top-class pieces of engineering, and look and fit almost perfectly! I just finished their 48th Sea King..... one of the best kits that I've built; it's fabulous, so I'm now waiting for that new Chinook on tenter-hooks...if it's at least as detailed as their 1/72 Sea Kings (the recent toolings!), then I'll be very happy, but it looks like it may almost rival their 1/48 Sea King, which will be wild in that scale!! Cannot wait! 😊 Great video Nigel, after all ramblings, they have some fantastic looking new kits (really looking forward to the new Eurofighter Typhoon as well, and the two RNLI craft...), thanks for showing the new catalogue; it looks great!! 👍

Thanks Nige, as educational and enjoyable a watch as ever. Been getting vibes from various online sources that this year's Airfix catalogue was a disappointment..... struggling to see their point of view to be honest. There's a pretty fine selection of interesting and significant vehicles in there- fair few new and/or improved. Add to that the 2 or 3 surprise unveilings through the year and I think they've done the modeller proud. But that's just my opinion. Thanks again Nige.

Built the 1/24 P-51D in the late 80s posed in flight with a motorized prop. It is a great kit to modernize. All those poor people that are asking $250.00 for previous released kits on Ebay will have a harder time selling. Hopefully there will be more upgrade parts developed for it. Wonder if the new Mk.IXc Merlin would fit into the old P-51 fifty two year old mold fuselage. Currently building several 1/24 aircraft that require a lot of extra work similar to what the P-51D kit needs. I may get one.

Superb. They’re really back - Big Time. My first kit was the Stirling back about 1966ish? Built many Airfix over the years, including the 1/24th P-51 when it came out!

I found little that stood out and made me think 'I must get that!' in the catalogue, but there were a few kits that I thought would be interesting. I already have the K2 ambulance which is great, and I've just finished the Gannet, which is absolutely superb and as you say, only needs seatbelts- the rest of the kit is all you need. Just make sure you get sufficient weight in the nose! Mine has slightly not quite enough though as it's glued & pinned to a diorama base it's not a problem. All the technical information is worth having for future reference- well done Airfix. I wonder what surprises we'll get later in the year- they're bound to be a bit special.
@NigelsModellingBench6 ай бұрын
Thanks Ian. Did you use the recommended nose weight, if so, how much more is required?
@ianthomson93636 ай бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench I think if you get as close as you can to the recommended weight you'll be fine. Liquid Gravity might be very useful, and you could also fill the prop spinner, just to make sure. I think I got 40 grams in the tray and perhaps 10 more behind the engines. It's not far off as on a level surface it sits on all its wheels, but it's very finely balanced. Apart from that, it's just a lovely kit to build- you'll enjoy it!

@@NigelsModellingBench Isnt the issue the space rather than recommended weight given that most lead substitutes you can buy now, are quite a bit lighter ?

I just use lead. Car wheel weights, scrap flashing and shot.

Nigel, excellent walkthrough of 2024 Airfix kit catalog. Lots here to like! Am particularly looking forward to purchasing the Consolidated B-24H; I see it is available for pre-order now but of course perhaps a while before actually becomes available. Any thoughts on when this might be released? NVM, see is Spring 2024 release. Think the shadow stand bases are a nice touch.

The Bismarck kit really has seen better days. I’ve been building one of the recent issues of the kit but have a 1960s issue to compare it to. The newer issue has flash, mould misalignments, sink marks, and detail that is very soft. It’s not a pleasant build experience and Airfix really should retire the tooling. It’s unlikely they would tool up a new 1/600 Bismarck, although it would probably sell.

After watching this episode, I have a catalog on pre-order, mostly for the references you pointed out. Can you recommend any other general modeling reference sources in print? I’d like to start a general scale modeling resource library. I’ve also pre-ordered the liberator and the lifeboat starter set the latter to introduce my grandchildren to modeling. It would be great if you did a beginner’s build on the lifeboat. It would make my job helping them learn modeling much easier. Thank you again for all your effort.

Maybe I miss your definition of “very old,” but the Jet Provost is from 2016. Nothing in common with the 1960 vintage T.3 or the 1973 vintage Strikemaster.

Sorry, I hadn't realised they retooled it in 2016. I was referring to the 60's tooling.

Did Airfix produce the Sunderland back in the day?. I got that as a Christmas present in 1960s?

Yes they did. The best 1/72 Sunderland around today is the Special Hobby versions.

Hi Nigel, with all your contacts and knowledge, would you know where I can get a C17 aircraft kit? If one exists and preferably over 1/48 as I'm not a fan of small kits, if not then sorry to have bothered you.

I built the Walrus when it first came out back in the year dot!
@ianthomson93636 ай бұрын
I was commissioned to build a Walrus and first got the Classic Airframes kit. I had to bin it as I couldn't see any way of getting the engine mounted accurately which would affect the top wing. The instructions are pretty vague as well. The Airfix kit was infinitely better and built into something good enough to present to my client. It's fiddly, but is worth it.

as a 1/48 scale preference for aviation modelling, Airfix's 2024 releases (to date) aren't particularly inspiring. I might be coached into building inter-ware biplane fighters, but that I'd need Airfix (or someone else) to have a reasonable range. There are a lot of "super-prop" and early jets I'd loved to build as well, but finding these is a bit patchy in 1/48 scale. IMO Airfix ought to have the best series of UK modern fighter aircraft in all scales out there. but they dont even manage to do that at the moment. I like what Airfix is attempting to do to get younger modellers into hobby, but I'm not sure if they have a transition from the simple low part count kits into more complex kits and I think they really ought to be releasing kits with extra detail (mostly 3D printed resin) or have better tie-ups with After market suppliers, if they prefer to just release the base kits at a very high standard. I don't understand why they are rebooking Academy 1/35 (apart from the new mould Cromwell). For the classic kid, I would release an extra sprue to address finer detail (like cockpits). The body parts often fit pretty well and have decent accuracy in 1/72. Simple adds like better cockpits would give many of these kits a new lease of life. I understand why new moulds cant de done given the high design cost, although I note a number of manufacturers seem to be doing this with rare subjects and small runs.
