To be “under one's thumb” means to be under that person's control. In this song, Mick Jagger has turned the tables on a girl who used to push him around, so now she's under his thumb and the “sweetest pet in the world.”

Brian Jones was the Rolling stones secret weapon in the 1960's. He played so many different instruments. He played; slide guitar, harmonica, dulcimer, mellotron, sitar, keyboards, etc... Here he is playing the marimbas.

Brian Jones on the Marimbas there. Just one of the many legendary imprints he made on their early music using whatever instrument came to hand (try Ruby Tuesaday next to hear him on the recorder). Definitely a nod to Motown here using a James Jamerson bass riff as the engine for this one. Love the underplayed guitar solo, too. Another good one from this era is 'I am waiting.'

I love the band’s creative ingenuity, exploration of different musical forms, and in-studio experimentation during the Brian Jones era. As songwriters, they started to hit their stride with Aftermath (1966). Still, they also made some of their most antithetical Stones material (as heard with their forays into Baroque Pop and Psychedelia) in the Jones era. It's just a brilliantly creative period for the group.

In today's world? I played this on my Halloween show on college radio because I considered it genuinely scary -- in 1974! 50 years ago! Don't get me wrong, I love the track, and the musicianship is superb, but those lyrics are definitely caveman worthy!

@@jpmnewyork I hear you. There were so many songs back then (and today) that are creepy. I am a huge Beatles fan, but check out the lyrics to "Run For Your Life" back in 1965, (yikes!) or Hendrix in "Hey Joe" and I love Jimi Hendrix too. I am just here for the music which is made even better with these wonderful brothers reactions.☮ ☺

@@Jules-um4yy Absolutely. Not only "Hey Joe" but Neil Young's "Down By The River" -- which I love to listen to, but man, there were an awful lot of women getting shot down in these songs. At least Neil sounded repentant -- Jimi was going to escape to Mexico so he could be free! As for the Beatles, Lennon was a textbook case of someone who recognized he had a problem, and evolved. They even addressed it in "Getting Better": I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene And I'm doing the best that I can Of course McCartney, of all people, still managed to make me cringe with "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"...

@@jpmnewyork Yes, I recall hearing interviews with Lennon regarding his past behavior and I remember that song well. The good news is that John had the awareness and insight to admit the problem. Hello La & Che, great reaction. I enjoy listening to the RS earlier tunes, they're style and sound underwent significant changes in the 1960's. The Stones were passionate about blues music, and they helped to introduce a wider audience to its sound in the 60's. Mick Jagger and Kieth Richards became one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of all time. It was wonderful meeting your daughter's La & Che, they are very beautiful and appear to have both their father's love for music. I hope we get to see them react to something else in future. Here's another suggestion for another song from the same album, if interested. "The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper (Official Lyric Video)" (by the channel: ABKCOVEVO) --The Rolling Stones describes this album "Aftermath" as one of the best albums to demonstrates their diverse range of styles and showcase their musical prowess and experimentational skills. As always, I enjoyed the reaction thanks for sharing. peace out~

The cut was from "Aftermath" (1965), the band's first album cut at RCA Studios in Hollywood. It was also their first album solely comprised of original material. They had help from arranger Jack Nitzsche (he played piano on "Flight 505" and "Doncha Bother Me," and probably rounded up the marimba that Brian Jones plays on "Under My Thumb") and engineer Dave Hassinger. But the record is all about groove.

Everybody pretty much acknowledges Jagger as a world class "frontman" and everybody thinks about his moves on stage, but I think he kinda gets overlooked sometimes as a vocalist. I think the people who demean his vocal prowess are primarily casual listeners who have not explored much of the band’s oeuvre. No one can listen to “Let it Loose,” “Shine a Light,” “I Got the Blues,” “Moonlight Mile,” or “Sister Morphine” and tell me Jagger is a lousy singer.

If you guys want to hear the best Jagger vox, look up "Let It Loose". No words for how good it is.

“Let it Loose” might be my all-time favorite Stones song. I wish these guys would do full album reactions because they're MISSING out on some truly great Stones songs, especially from that 1968-1972 period.

Please do the improvised "Going home" from Aftermath next. Back then it was very unusual to add an 11 minutes long track on albums ❤
