I'm so glad I'm not in a relationship that requires me to run to reddit to ask them if I totally owned my wife in a conversation that didn't need to be shared and could have been resolved with a little communication.
@samus598

I had to run to Reddit to solve a serious dispute in my marriage once. Wife claimed Obama said something grammatically incorrect in a speech. I disagreed and calmly explained to her: my house, my grammar rules. If you don't like it, you can leave. But she STILL insisted that The President of The United States AND the emperor of our home were both wrong. I had tried to ignore her egotistical insistence on having her own opinions in the past, but sometimes a man has to put his foot down and instill discipline in the immature. The lack of disregard she showed for me by disagreeing about a rare minor semantic nuance in English grammar, and her continued audacity to disrespect me as the ruling authority of the household (even when I reminder her of her position on the totem pole) was the straw that broke my incredibly resilient tolerance. Of course, it goes without saying that I wasn't going to let this woman who I had sworn to love and protect abuse my continuous and gracious charity. (until this point i had always allowed her to live under MY roof.) Not anymore. This red faced and shrieking (which is how I describe anyone who disagrees with me) disagreer was not the woman married. I wasn't even mad at the disagreement really, but it was really more about the principle: A NON RENT PAYER should NEVER EVER even consider the notion of thinking about dictating OR QUESTIONING the grammar rules of the domicile in which they are so graciously allowed to reside. Don't like it? Well then I hope you like hypothermia and gnawing coyotes, maybe you can try giving THEM such a disrespectful grammar lesson now that they are your roommates. Maybe you can learn a thing or two about how to respect alpha males such as myself while you're at it. Reddit told me I was correct, something about a gerund. But even if I wasn't technically right it wouldn't matter, I had already kicked her out on principle. I drive past her sometimes, she lives under the overpass now shaking and crying and whining about PTSD. She STILL blames everything on me. Suuuure. So traumatizing. A free place to sleep at night and all you had to do is follow a few hundred pages of house rules? Sign me up! Whenever i see her i make sure to get out of my car and yell gerunds at her with my best Barack Obama impersonation. Sometimes I'll even drive down there at night when she's sleeping and shake her tent to remind her what it feels like to be disrespected in your own home. She'll say something like "please stop" or "please leave me alone" and I'll yell "THAT'S GRAMATICALLY INCORRECT" over and over. Or at least that's how I imagine that disagreement would have gone if I was one of the insane people on Reddit.

Just working out with the son is such an easy answer. If you want to live a child free life, don’t date someone with a child. Like you’re perfectly entitled to want a home gym just to yourself and have your home be your castle. But don’t invite a child to live with you
@wolfengod8277

“So I’m dating this woman, and I don’t like her son. So basically I moved her and her kid that I don’t like into my house and was hostile towards him, and he disrespected me. I’m not even going to consider that he probably dislikes me as much as I dislike him but he’s 14 and has no real option to leave unless he wants to become a homeless child, so then I just let him think he was going to die and mocked him, aren’t I so fantastic.” The dude is a total mouth breather, the kid shouldn’t be smashing locks with a hammer, but why would the dude even invite them to live with him if he knows he doesn’t like the kid? It like he has some weird power fantasy about controlling and limiting a child, truly a pathetic insecure excuse of a man. I can only hope the story is fake, but I’ve definitely seen people that have this sort of mindset.

Honestly, given the fact that the guy hates the stepson and given the stepson's actions, I'm willing to bet the kid hates his stepfather as well. "I'll show you how to use the gym equipment and work out with you" is probably going to be met with an "f*** off" from the kid, given the fact that he's a misbehaving 14-year-old with a bad relationship with his stepfather. It's a pretty clear ESH - clearly this partnership is doomed - but "just ask the son to work out with you" isn't going to work in this circumstance.
@AKAProm
@AKAProm Жыл бұрын
"isn't going to work" you never know unless you try. Breaking people's negative expectations of you is a really good start into having a mutual respect for one another. Like obviously no one can know how things would've played out differently in another timeline but if the guy was just nice to the kid from the get-go then they could be pretty close by now. "I won't call him dad but he lets me work out in the cool basement gym so that's pretty cool" type stuff. Anything would be better than being a dickhead the whole time. Kid sounds like he might have behavioral issues but you don't change that by constantly pushing him around. Also yeah, don't date someone with a kid if you're not up to help raise that kid.

The crazy part about the first one is that he lists no examples of disrespect other than working out in his gym and some minor gym inconveniences. No broken or beat up equipment (besides an overkill lock), just can't use daddy's toys. He hasn't even brought up talking through the issue with the son. All the direct interaction he references is slow clapping and making fun of him after the kid got mad and claimed he's not that strong. It makes it seem like the OP is giving out more than he's taking if you know what I mean.

People overlooked the part where the dude said they moved in together because she couldn't afford her own place anymore. The guy is just self centered, never wanted kids, and was dating a woman for sex and companionship. The kid was "baggage" he didn't think he had to be bothered with. Then came an economic downturn, the GF couldn't afford to live on her own anymore and being stuck he decided to let her and the kid he probably barely knew move in. He doesn't see the kid as anything other than his girlfriend's child. Might as well be a poorly behaved roommate. This is why he doesn't think to work out with George...in his mind he has no obligation to the kid, the kid's job is to be a good roommate and his job is to let the kid live there.

And the woman obviously was enough of an idiot to let that inferior man knock her up, so honestly she's not worth your time, not to mention the higher someone's body count, the more likely they'll cheat, dump you for no reason, or domestically abuse you. Don't waste your time. Only legitimate reason to be a single parent is if your partner died.

I think the guy is in the wrong but there is at least some justification to his anger (not that he should have reacted how he did). A few points: 1. This could have all been avoided had he shown the kid how to work out and supervised him during bench presses 2. George shows rebellious behavior (expected at 14) when he decides to break the lock only for that behavior to be instilled when his mom starts giving the key 3. Although George finally got caught in his own mistakes, the OP should have lectured him AFTER he saved his life immediately which would have proved his point AND increased their bond making George less rebellious to his authority If you’re going to date a woman with children in your 30s, you’re going to have to start acting like a father if you want anything to work out 🤷🏽‍♂️ that’s just the way the cookie crumbles

it digs heavily into the parenting/childfree life philosophies. many people fall heavily in support of either of the 2 camps, and can't or won't see the other side. while I'm in the childfree side, I recognize that kids need a 2 parent household to have a chance at succeeding at life. that being said, trying to guilt people into doing the "right thing"( parenting isn't inherently moral or amoral, neither is a child free life, this is why family planning is incredibly important and people should be prepared not only individually but collectively at the community level for having children, or for being respected for not having children) never works, backfires and leads to more pathology, not less. it's that guy's choice whether to parent or not, he chose not, and now it's the woman's choice as to whether to continue the relationship with the guy, as being a mother dictates finding a partner for her son. while he's an a hole for how he responded to the kid, he's not an a hole for his choice not to parent, as forcing a relationship can and often does lead to toxic relationships.

Instead he turns his gym into fort knox. But after all this the mother is still like "nah the kid can do what he wants", and the person wants to live with this woman for some reason. But aha huge breakthrough after only ever seeing traces of the kid doing all this, he now catches him red handed and of course the moment he does, the kid almost fucking dies (but obviously not in an actually life threatening manner that's bad for reddit karma). First story: They all are wrong with OP being the worst. First and foremost, he absolutely SHOULD be taking advantage of the girlfriend’s son’s desire to work out and use those lessons to bond. Second, once the OP said to leave the equipment alone the kid had no right to break the lock and go in there and while it may not have been one of OP’s concerns he was still stupid go in there and use the equipment alone. Third, the girlfriend had no right to use that key to circumvent his boundaries surrounding his own property, as selfish and foolish as we consider him to be for even setting that boundary. And if the basement is solely the off-limits gym and not also a storage/utility space then she doesn’t actually need the key either. Fourth, he should have immediately helped the kid and used that lesson to reiterate that he is not to go in there alone. Finally, that woman needs to separate herself from this selfish man who has no regard for the well-being of her son ASAP.

I feel like NL is a bad take machine, but he's incredibly funny about them. But, I don't invest so much into his takes that it frustrates me, though it does make me shake my head sometimes.

The guy was *probably* right that the bar was no danger to the stepson. As long as the bar isn't on your neck, while it may be scary, you'll be fine. That being said the guy sounds insane.

Its wierd you have to sort by controversial to find sane comments in this subreddit. hes a kid. One that likely went through the divorce of his parents and now this guy who has seemingly no interest in being a dad is replacing his dad.

I can only imagine the amount of emotional trauma that first gym guy must have gone through. To end up in a place where you don't have the emotional capacity to share your gym equipment with a 14 year old? I hope he tries out therapy or finds peace in some other way. I think the only way you react that hard to sharing and needing control over everyone in your life is if there was some sort of chaos earlier in your life. I just imagine this guy going from girlfriend to girlfriend, sabotaging his relationships and thinking it's because "my girlfriends are so disobedient" when actually he just has a problem with how he understands control and autonomy. Hope he gets out of that head space, jeez

if he can pay $7k for gym equipment he can definitely afford to pay for a couple therapy sessions lmao

I'm baffled at these takes. To start, the kid is clearly a very rude and undisciplined young man, making me think the kids biological father may have been a terrible influence. Regardless, I'm sure OP tried opening up to him on several occasions but the kid simply won't accept any help, just chooses to continue the chaos. These types of teenagers are common and quite difficult to deal with especially as a step-parent who wasn't present during the kids childhood. So OP decides to give up on trying too hard with him, but still maintains basic parent-child decency when dealing with him. OP gave him very simple instructions which asked not to visit his gym, which he put a lot of work and energy into (NL's shallow take that it's just "metal" rings, etc. doesn't make any sense when you consider the importance of these items to a former bodybuilder like OP). The hassle is that the kid frequently chooses to disobey very simple instructions which ends up causing financial inconvenience with locks have to be replaced again, and the fact that the mother seemingly refuses to acknowledge this very serious and obvious flaw in character doesn't help. It's not about him using the gym, good for the kid, focusing on his physical health at this age is important and it is an all-around great activity. Rather it's about the principle and concept of respecting someone else's wishes and property especially when none of it belongs to you. The kid was trusted by this older guardian to not use this particular room, so therefore breaking this trust will have serious consequences. These are basic ethics everyone should have internalized by his age. Solution? The kid requires serious therapy at this stage as waiting longer can worsen his cognitive development, and OP needs to have a discussion with the mother regarding this gap in their relationship and ways to balance it moving forward. (That is if he's looking for a longer-term relationship)

@@TheFar95 The guy didn't even mention any specifics about what makes him a troubled kid, besides the lock-smashing which is indeed pretty intense behavior. He made himself sound immature also using his own words, except he's 15-plus years the senior. I mean, slow clap? Really? That's laughable. Anyway, the story is fake.
