The son seriously canceled a birthday spa trip for his wife that he didn’t even pay for, how selfish do you have to be to ruin spouses birthday just so that you and your friends can get shitfaced for a day, while also probably expecting said spouse to say home to take care of your drunk ass when you decided to crawl back home

Can we just talk about how he made her sell her business to make her a stay at home mom. Did she make him feel less of a man. It feels like he's enjoying this and making her feel less than, like she did to him. He was probably threatened by her success. Just a theory.

I agree. When i became pregnant and had to get surgery that put me on bedrest remainder of my pregnancy. I usually made more than my husband and we never butted heads because of it. When i had to quit my job he immediately got a job that could take care if all of us. And he said i can be a stay at home mom like ive always wanted! He treated me amazing before the pregnancy and now that im pregnant i feel so lucky. Honestly if my husband acted like that i believe his mom would act the same.. She defiantly needs to sit down with her husband and have a looong talk

That's one thing that bothered me like don't you want more money and much more steady income, it shows he has fragile masculinity, this is one thing i feared the most if I get married someday. Hoping for DIL to divorce him if he doesn't change.

The issue with him hanging out with his friends is that the spa day was for DIL’s BIRTHDAY. So he made plans with his drinking buddies on his wife’s birthday? NAH FAM. If a MIL can be so generous, a husband should be. NTA, I hope if I ever treated my spouse like that, my parents would embarrass the life out of me to teach me a lesson.

No, she's not an asshole. She's an AMAZING MOM! Motherhood doesn't end when your kid is an adult. She raised him to be a certain way only to find out he wasn't, so she had every right to confront him about it. On top of that, everyone know public shaming can be useful.

The fact this woman was taking care of three kids under 4 without any help is ridiculous. The guy manipulated his wife into being a SAHM and then just said fuck you. Every behaviour we’re shown here tells me he doesn’t respect his wife at all. He should be left with the kids for a week.

The son was downright abusing and manipulating his wife emotionally. He convinced her to be a “stay at home mom” just so he could AVOID any responsibility that came with children and having a family. With her wife being at home 100% of her time and his thought of “that’s what stay at home moms do” hes basically avoiding everything that comes with parenting and even marriage. Props to the MIL because she teached a lesson to that asshole.

I don’t have kids but this is something that honestly scares me about raising kids. Imagine putting so much effort and energy into raising your child to be a decent human being and they STILL come out to be a complete a-hole! I would feel like a total failure! I understand that people have their own personalities and mindsets, but man, as a parent? That must be so freaking hard. Good on the mom to hold her “grown” son accountable though! That’s what real parenting looks like!

I usually stand by the idea that the arrangement of a relationship is between the couple. Of course, if you think a person is bring severely mistreated, you should pull them aside, and talk to them about it, offer support. The thing that makes this situation different is that she found out he was using her to hold his wife up to standers that she herself didn't keep. He made it her business. Also it seems that the wife is an agreeable person who probably didn't want her mother in law, or any one else to think of her as "less of a woman" because she couldn't do what she thought her mother in law was able to. Maybe she should have handled this privately. Or maybe he deserved to be embarrassed and have is reputation stained. I'm not one to say. But I'm gonna say NTA.
@amandab2330
@amandab2330 2 жыл бұрын
I deffinitly agree. A relationship is between those two people. Unless you (and by you, I mean in general terms) are invited into the situation, you should stay out of it, especially if you don't know the whole story. Just becuase you mean well and have intentions that are genuinely good, does not mean that your actions will positively effect the situation, though it also doesn't mean it won't be positive. I also want to stress that just because you're their parent, does not give you the right to insert yourself into your adult child's situations. If you think something is really wrong there is a way to approach it, which can be different for every person/situation at hand. In this case I totally agree, MIL was NTA. She did not just insert herself into the situation. She made an observation about her DIL mental health and decided to do something nice and non-judgmental to help which in the end led up to the DIL opening up to her and was seemingly aware her MIL was going to the bar. Based on the information provided, the DIL invited her in. Could/should have the MIL have handled the situation differently? Possibly but there's not enough information to weigh in on that.

Ummmm I LOVE THIS MIL! My ex husband forced me to be a SAHM. He would show up to every job I managed to land and pick fights with my coworkers until I was fired or asked to resign. He had grown up without a Mom. When I finally grew the courage to leave and ask for a divorce, his attorney argued that I contributed nothing to the marriage because I couldn’t keep a job. The judge refused to allow me to speak or defend myself.

To be fair and honest.. If she "agreed" to the terms of being a SAHM and selling her business, it was only because he sold it to her in a guilt tripped manner and in a deceiving manner. I say that because that's what set his mom off! He was not forthcoming about the arrangement his parents had. In the end he was left with the control.. of her, the finances, their time, her time, his time... That's what set his mom off. He was not honest, he took advantage of her and probably made his wife feel guilty because of his wants being withheld if he didn't get to meet with friends/get what he wanted. Where as they "agreed" she'd stay at home and not bring an income... Mom asked if they failed him because he was deceiving his wife and her role. Go mom! FYI I'm holding back.

As a stay at home mom I appreciate this discourse. So many people think I should be working. We have 4 toddlers, none are in school yet. The 2nd and 4th are chronically ill. The youngest was officially put on the transplant list this past Monday (3/14). They get mad when I say okay show me a daycare that can check a 1y/o's and 4y/os blood sugar and blood pressure several times a day. Can deal with their service dogs? Can deal with a 4y/o not being potty trained because they always feel like they have to pee? Now find me one that's affordable.

And, on the topic of being the stay-at-home parent: besides the work itself, you also have an additional pressure in the responsibility of creating a comfortable space. By which I mean that you're not just tidying up a house for yourself, or cooking a meal for yourself, or fulfilling quotas at work and that's that: you have to do things in a way that keeps other people happy, and have to shoulder the additional weight of pleasing others. You can't just cook/clean/organize to the extent that pleases you, you need to accommodate and fulfill the expectations of others. I'm not sure if I'm completely getting across what I'm thinking, but honestly I'd prefer to just have a simple job and live on my own with no one else to worry about or stress over besides myself, than to be stuck in a house with the pressure of pleasing everyone, and not being obligated to just _doing_ some specific tasks, but being obligated to _achieve_ a certain kind of feeling in others. That might sound a bit abstract, so for an example; at work, you just have to accomplish a certain number of tasks or duties, and once you do what's your responsibility to do, that's it. How other people feel about it, or if anyone hmms or complains, at the end of the day you've done your part of the deal. Even if they don't like it 100%, if you've been commissioned to make an art piece for someone and you produce it, you've done your part. Over. But if you have to create and manage a home _for someone,_ it's not just tasks. You're responsible for satisfying another person. Because you "owe them," since they're doing the work to bring in the money, now you have to do "your share" by making a home they enjoy coming back to. Anyway, that's a bit of a garbled thought that occurred to me in the middle listening, so I'm not sure if I managed to express it all that well or if it really makes sense. But tl;dr: I'd prefer having to balance work and housework if the housework only needs to satisfy me, than to be stuck only doing housework but for more people than myself. Seems like so much more stressful, esp since it starts you out from a position of dependence and indebtedness, since the other person is the source of all your revenue. Like if I'm on my own, and I fuck up dinner, boo-hoo who cares, I'll laugh it off and eat the charcoal for that evening. But with a family relying on you?

As a mother of a son who is way too young to have these issues, if he grows up to treat his partner like this i will definitely be sticking my nose in places. I better have raised him right to know how to treat his lady (or man) and the person he’s raising kids WITH (with is key!!)

Try being a stay at home mom with one of your children (we have 5 children) being a quadriplegic on life support... completely bed bound... I am so thankful we have a nurse and a home health aid... but there are days where we don't have our nurse or a home health aid... SAHM are tired too... good job for this mom... whip his butt into shape.... she is not the azzhle....

From the title YTA. Hears the story: hahahahaha, ma'am you're not the asshole. Matter of fact, you went too easy on his lazy, sorry ass. You didn't fail him as a mother, he failed himself as a person.
